OAKLAND — Justin Upton is expected to be out 8 to 12 weeks, a much more significant period than he was initially expected to miss after further diagnosis revealed a more serious injury.

Manager Brad Ausmus said the Angels just received further medical evaluation on Upton, who hurt his left big toe when he collided with the wall in Sunday’s exhibition game. The Angels initially expected Upton to miss two to three weeks.

“Can we withstand it?” Ausmus said. “We have to. We don’t have a choice.”

The Angels currently have a combination of Peter Bourjos and Brian Goodwin playing left field. David Fletcher can also play left.
