BALTIMORE — Five Angels homers and Andrew Heaney’s return to the mound were spoiled in frighteningly familiar fashion.

Keynan Middleton gave up a walk-off grand slam to Manny Machado in the Angels’ 9-7 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night. It was Machado’s third home run of the night and the third walk-off grand slam the Angels have allowed in the last month.

Thanks to a season-high in homers, five innings from Heaney and three strong innings from the bullpen, the Angels took a two-run lead to the ninth, before it all went wrong.

Yusmeiro Petit had worked the eighth, and the Angels sent him back out to face the bottom of the Baltimore order in the ninth. He gave up a leadoff single to Anthony Santander, the first hit of his career.

An out later, Petit walked pinch-hitter Seth Smith, yielding to Keynan Middleton to face the top of the order with the potential tying run on base.

Tim Beckham singled into right to load the bases, bringing up Machado. He got ahead 2-and-0, then blasted a homer to center field.

The Angels also gave up walk-off grand slams to Edwin Encarnacion in Cleveland and Steve Pearce in Toronto last month.

The rally spoiled the night for Heaney, who was pitching in the majors for the first time after undergoing Tommy John surgery 13½ months ago. Heaney gave up five runs, on four homers, in five innings, on 82 pitches.

Still, he left the game in line for a victory thanks to a robust performance from the offense.

They hit two homers in the first inning, before Heaney even threw a pitch. One was a two-run homer by Albert Pujols, who tied Sammy Sosa for eighth on the all-time list. With 609 homers apiece, Pujols and Sosa are tied for the record among players born outside the United States.

Kole Calhoun, C.J. Cron, Mike Trout and Kaleb Cowart also homered for the Angels, who took a 5-0 lead in the second and a 7-4 lead in the fifth, before trying to hang on over the final four innings.
