Against the Angels' righty-centric lineup Saturday, one can expect a healthy dose of sliders and changeups from Tigers starter Max Scherzer. C.J. Wilson will be on the hill opposite Scherzer as the Angels try to follow up Friday's win at Comerica Park. View the full article

One of those weird quirks of the early season. After 15 games, the opposing teams' number 8 hitters in the lineup have an OPS of 1.142 with 6 home runs. That's more home runs than the 1,3, 6,7 & 9 hitters combined. Better watch out for those Detroit shortstops this weekend.

Other than Frieri's mistake pitch in game one, the bullpen put together a ton of nice innings in this series. In the two extra inning games, the pen was used more according to who was available, rather than who "should" be pitching in certain innings/situations. Salas, Jepsen, Kohn..the usual whipping boys for how much the pen collectively sucks, were lights out. To me this suggests that it might not be as much low talent level out there, but how they are being used, that could be the main reason for the poor results. These guys didn't go from gas cans to elite overnight, yet there they were, throwing 10 pitch, shut down innings, against a great hitting team. My …

Playing catch in the outfield, cleared to throw to live batters. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/04/18/aroldis-chapman-cleared-to-throw-live-batting-practice/ I post this mainly to point out how other players can return from having their heads bashed in by point blank line drives, 10X faster than Angel pitchers recover from elbow fatigue or forearm tightness.

One of the fastest guys in the league and he hasn't attempted to steal a base, when he had chances. He should easily steal over 50 bases a year, but it looks like Scioscia will not give him the opportunities. Let the man loose.

All in all, our pitching has been good, statistically speaking. As of 4:41PM 4/17/14: #2 in the Major Leagues in strikeouts. #7 in the Major Leagues in batting average against. #6 in the Major Leagues in HR/FB (which indicates we've been unlucky in that regard) We know we have a powerhouse offense (at least when 2/3 of our outfield isn't injured) so I think these pitching stats bode well for our future. Coming into this season, pitching was our #1 concern and it seems like Dipoto addressed that pretty well. His HR's notwithstanding, Trumbo is around the Mendoza Line and that trade is holding up pretty well as time passes.
