by Joe Tevelowitz, AngelsWin.com Columnist - This past weekend, I was lucky enough to be one of the sports data denizens in attendance at the 8th Annual MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. A great event overall, providing me an opportunity to ask Phil Jackson a question (via tweet and through Jackie MacMullan), watch Malcolm Gladwell grill Adam Silver on unfair tax breaks for team owners, and grab a sweet pic with Lakers owner and Future Mrs. Tevelowitz, Jeannie Buss. Despite a large basketball contingent grabbing many of the highlights and prime panel spots of the weekend, baseball –- the sport that first embraced analytics and its activists – made its own i…

Through cover shoots, commercials and contract talks, the talented young center fielder keeps his focus.

TEMPE, Ariz. — There was a Nike photo shoot, the filming of a commercial for Major League Baseball, appearances on ESPN, MTV, Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports West, and interviews with newspapers, websites and radio stations. Still to come is a Sports Illustrated cover photo shoot. View the full article

There's no question Tyler Skaggs could be a huge piece for the Angels in 2014. If he's not the part that gets them back to the postseason, he could very well elevate a decent starting rotation into a special one. If that happens, the Angels almost certainly will be in the mix for a playoff berth. View the full article

https://twitter.com/Angels/status/441233455980879872/photo/1 some interesting stuff here: -Aybar leading off at DH. MS has not lost his sense of humor, that's for sure. -Grant Green playing SS -Albert Pujols making the trip, I can only assume to get as many ABs as possible to get his timing down. Aybar the only other starter.

Masterson and his agent, Randy Rowley, have made a three- to four-year proposal to the Indians believed to be in the $40 million to $60 million range. They are waiting to hear back from the team. http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2014/03/justin_masterson_makes_multiye.html And if that's true, the Indians should probably take it like now.

Saw this abbreviation on the MLB network ticker and my first thought was that it meant "group fart." Then I thought of Derek Jeter being hitless thus far in the group fart league. Good times. Group fart.

Hi All, I have a Dynasty League heading into its 3rd year and I have at least one team opening (Jamestown Patriots): http://games.espn.go.com/flb/leagueoffice?leagueId=169379&teamId=1&seasonId=2014 25-man active roster and extended 15-man rosters (maintained on Google Docs). The open team (Patriots) has a very rich group of pitching prospects (Hultzen, Syndergaard, Zimmer, Stephenson, and Bradley) along with Oscar Taveras. E-mail me at: ettinone@outlook.com if you are interested. Robert

Veteran right-hander once threw in the mid-90s, much like his younger counterpart does now, before gradually losing velocity. But they believe that there is more to pitching than throwing hard. TEMPE, Ariz. — Jered Weaver was just like Garrett Richards a few years back, a young buck with the mound bravado that often accompanies a 95-mph fastball. View the full article

Rangers ace says he'll try a different approach this year against Trout, who's hit him well in past. It was all fastballs Tuesday, but that won't happen in regular season. TEMPE, Ariz. — Mike Trout saw nothing but fastballs in two at-bats against Texas ace Yu Darvish on Tuesday. They might be the last fastballs the Angels center fielder sees from the Rangers right-hander this season. View the full article
