MLB Advanced Media announces new data stream (so very cool)!

Its funny how skeptical the old timers are of this

I was watching the Cardinals/Marlins game today, it was interesting to hear the StL announcers talking about a pitcher's FIP and explaning how the stat works and what it measures.   They were using park indexes to talk about their minor leaguers and how it impacted their totals in some areas -- was really so neat to hear it being talked about...

My guess is if the Angels announcers tried to incorporate advanced metrics some fans might not be so quick to write them off.

Tampa's announcers starting bringing advanced stats to their broadcasts a few years ago. This was mandated by management to help educate fans more about the personnel moves they make.

I like victor and gubi, both have some of that knowledge about the game and the ability to "read between the stats" so to speak.

terry and mota are as archaic as they come, however

Does this mean the ball is coming out of his hand well, he is swinging the bat good and he really knows how to go after it in the field might actually be quantifiable and not something somebody says that is complete nonsense? Excellent.

shuck knows how to get after it in the field, he just can't catch it

This is suppose to be available for tv replays and they are saying it should be publicly available sometime next year. They'd eventually like for it to available to fans at the stadium via wireless devices. This will really help us quantify defense. First stat will be route efficiency for both fielders & base runners. Also first step time & running speed/acceleration will be very useful to see which player really gets good jumps and who relies on their speed. The batted ball info could be will be very interesting. All in all very exciting.

This is going to be used to create new data sets most likely. It is very possible that this is all fans ever see of it, much like with Hit f/x & Field f/x.

yeah, haven't heard of those before and have no idea what they are.
