Five veteran position players were added on Minor League contracts over the offseason, including first baseman Carlos Pena, corner outfielder Brennan Boesch, corner infielder Chad Tracy, third baseman Ian Stewart and utility infielder John McDonald. Five intriguing in-house candidates are in the mix right along with them, which makes 10 players fighting for three spots on the bench. View the full article

Jered Weaver got ready in a way he never really has before this offseason. He worked on his offspeed pitches prior to Spring Training for the first time, in anticipation of getting stretched out early, and trained with massage therapist Yoichi Terada to "get all the limbs and everything feeling up to par." His work paid off in his first start of spring. View the full article

Bud Norris 1 2

(08:19 am ET) Orioles pitcher Bud Norris is drawing trade interest, according to MASN. Rival teams are keeping an eye on Norris, especially if the Orioles decide to sign another starter. Despite bringing in Ubaldo Jimenez during the offseason, the club is still in the hunt for Ervin Santana. If Santana were to be brought in, Norris could lose his rotation spot. Last year, Norris posted a 4.18 ERA in 176 2/3 innings. Would you? I mean, the O's have Gausman, Bundy and Britton as well, and we could probably get him for cheap or a lower end prospect I'm thinking. Seems to pitch well in Anaheim (and against of course).

Our annual countdown begins with the players from last year's Top 30 which did not reappear on the list this year, as well as some honorable mentions. This is where I'll be posting links to each of their scouting reports as we release them, which should be 4 per week. This year's honorable mentions include 2B/3B Sherman Johnson, 3B/LF Cal Towey and SP Daniel Hurtado. http://www.monkeywithahalo.com/2014-articles/january/2014-mwah-top-prospects-countdown-preview-honorable-mention-and-2013-in-review.html

A source tells USA Today's Bob Nightengale that the Angels and outfielder Mike Trout are negotiating a six-year contract extension worth around $140 million. The prospective deal would keep Trout with the Angels through the 2020 season. Talks of a long-term extension has been reported in recent days, and with Trout's new $1 million salary for 2014 out of the way the two sides can focus on hammering something out. Previous reports from Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan had the deal in the seven-year, $150-160 million range, but either way, it seems like only a matter of time before the two sides agree on a deal that will pay the 22-year-old a whole lot of money.

Corey Perry, who along with Ryan Getzlaf helped Canada win a gold medal at Sochi, says he won't let satisfaction with that achievement dull his appetite for a Stanley Cup. Four years wiser, Ducks stars Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf insisted Wednesday that the satisfaction of the gold medal that swung around their necks three days earlier won't dull their enthusiasm for a Stanley Cup. Reports once indicated that Mike Trout's representatives and the Angels were discussing a six-year, $150 million deal. That could still happen after his $1 million 2014 contract. In fact, getting this piece of the puzzle in place probably increases the odds of a lucrative extension. View the full article

Prospect Profile: #24 Los Angeles Angels Cal Towey Bats: Left Throws: Right Height: 6’1â€ 215 lbs. DOB: 2/6/90 (Orem): .317/.492/.543 with 8 HRs and 13 SBs Fans of OB% should love Cal Towey. That .492 OB% is not a typo. He led the Pioneer League with 67 BBs while only striking out 59 times in 315 PA. Pronounced “Too-EEâ€, Cal was one of the main driving forces for the Owlz playoff drive in 2013. Batting in the heart of the Owlz lineup, Towey showed a good blend of power and speed. He was only caught 3 times on the basepaths and only grounded into 4 DPs. Defensively, Cal was a bit challenged, producing an .899 FLD% at 3B (17 errors). There has been s…

couple of fun articles. First one is a comparison of fangraphs playoffs odds vs. a sports book's playoff odds. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/playoff-odds-comparison-fangraphs-vs-a-sportsbook/ Second is a review of last year's zips projections http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/howd-we-do-a-year-ago/ The halos, obviously, deviated quite a bit. A little blurb: ANGELS Projection: +1.3 standard deviations Reality: +0.3 Difference: -1.1 This, despite Mike Trout over-performing. That’s what happens when you get way too little out of guys like Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton. The Angels had every reason to expect those guys to be terrific, hen…

Alden Gonzalez Mike Trout has agreed to terms on a one-year deal for 2014. Talks for extension ongoing. Important thing about this: agreement, not renewal. Alden Gonzalez Trout got exactly $1M. #Angels Jeff Fletcher Last year when Trout was renewed it meant his salary was assigned without his agreement. This year he agreed. #Angels The way that is worded tells me that the extension announcement is probably coming soon.
