Hitting coach won't be back for weeks. Angels are 0-2 after loss to Mariners. It will be weeks, probably months, before Don Baylor can return to the Angels as their full-time hitting coach after he underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a fractured right femur, a freak injury Baylor suffered while catching the ceremonial first pitch before Monday night's season opener. Angels drop their first two games of the season at home. KEY MOMENT: With runners on second and third and two out in the third, Angels left-hander C.J. Wilson intentionally walked the left-handed-hitting Robinson Cano to load the bases for switch-hitter Justin Smoak. Cano entered with a .367 average (11 for 30) against Wilson, and Smoak had a .207 mark (six for 29), but the move backfired, as Smoak drove a three-run double to left-center field to cap a four-run rally and give Seattle a 4-0 lead. A couple of us Angels fans here in Las Vegas were thinking of hitting Aces and Ales near Cheyenne & the 95 for opening day. If anyone else is interested, please come on down, it should be a fun time. This is going to be totally informal and there are zero plans to do anything other than consume bar food, watch Angels baseball and enjoy a few adult beverages. So, if you're in the Las Vegas area and are interested, stop by. Edited for cross-street error.

By Rob Goldman, AngelsWin.com Historical Writer - By 1979 Baylor had finally disciplined himself to become a team leader, and it transformed him into one of the premier players in the American League. He was the full embodiment of the (Frank) Robinson doctrine he had learned as a young Oriole: take no prisoners. On the base paths he was an aggressive runner who knocked down infielders on double plays like bowling pins. At the plate, he was a tough out. He walked almost as often as he struck out, and he was never afraid of taking one for the team. “Whatever it took to reach base—that was Groove’s motto. He called his approach “controlled aggression.

Post your predictions here for season game #2 - 4/1/14 vs. the Seattle Mariners. Game time is 7:05 pm PST. The probable pitchers are E. Ramirez ® vs. C.J. Wilson (L). Listed below are the winners from tonight's game #1, 3/31/14 vs. Seattle. Should you feel that I have made an error please PM me and I will investigate and revise if valid. A couple of tips: There were several invalid entries today for game #1. Your prediction for a hitter must contain two elements, the first element is the number of hits per the number of at bats, the second is a prediction element limited to those found in the Rules. Strikeouts are not a valid prediction element for a hitter…

During Vlad's ceremony last night I was reminded of a question I've had for quite awhile: why did the Angels give a number to Mike Trout that is very likely to be retired by the team when Vlad goes into the National Baseball Hall of Fame? (Going by the precedent set by retirement of No. 29.) Are they just potentially going to retire it twice?
