SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Tyler Anderson wants to return to his philosophy of pitching this year. “My whole life has been trying to make good pitches, not make my pitches good,” Anderson said. The catchy phrase refers to the difference between thinking about how a pitch works against a certain hitter in a certain game situation, and simply measuring the velocity or the break or the spin of the baseball. As Anderson looks to rebound from the worst year of his career, he said one of the points of emphasis is not to chase Trackman numbers. “Less chasing stuff, which I felt was the M.O. last year, as opposed to pitching, which is what I like,” Anderson said. Anderson, who was …

MIAMI — Tyler Anderson delivered exactly what the Angels needed. The left-hander pitched seven scoreless innings in a 3-1 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night, saving the Angels on a night when most of their relievers needed a rest. No Angels starter had gotten an out in the sixth inning through the first four games. On Monday, the Angels needed five relievers to get through six innings. They could have made a roster move to bring in a fresh reliever, as insurance in case Anderson got knocked out early, but they instead took their chances. Anderson did the job, pitching his best game since signing a three-year, $39 million deal with the Angels prior to the …

By Taylor Blake Ward, AngelsWin.com Contributor Cactus League has finished. Freeway Series has finished. Up next is the Major League season followed by the start of the Minor League season. Looking back on this spring, we put an emphasis on a handful of Angels prospects and how different perspectives came about this spring from the trained eye. We asked three different people from three differing fields about their opinions on specific players in Angels camp over Spring Training. In a repeat article from the year prior, we asked experts in the field -- who consist of an Angels Front Office Executive, a former player who spent regular time at Angels camp, and a p…

MIAMI — Adam Cimber went from being one of baseball’s best relievers in 2021 and 2022 to an injury-marred nightmare in 2023. Now, the Angels right-hander feels he’s back to himself. “You never know how things are going to go,” Cimber said. “You can only control what you can control, but body-wise I feel better than I felt last year. I’m just going to keep going till the wheels fall off.” Cimber has allowed one run in his first 3⅔ innings, including a critical part of Monday night’s victory. He entered with two runners on and one out in the sixth, got a double play on one pitch, and then added a perfect seventh. Cimber, 33, signed a one-year, $1.65 million deal with th…

Small sample size, but he looks totally lost, especially in the field. Just nerves? Hopefully he isn't the second coming of David Fletcher.

0-4 Down 9-0 in the bottom of 8th and their 1B coach failed to show up. Then they couldn’t find anyone to do it and had a lengthy delay. The probably only had 15 people at the game. Bobby Knopp never would have done this. Good times.

The Athletic recently had an article, "The Aces Project", ranking the top 50 active starting pitchers in MLB (no Angels), with Gerrit Cole being rated the highest. Scores were tabulated based on a 20 person panel of executives, scouts, and analysts rating the pitcher on durability and performance on a 1-5 scale. It's pretty clear that the definition of a "#1", TOR arm has evolved quite a lot over the past 10-15 years, but the article made me realize that the Angels haven't drafted and developed a guy who you could argue is a true ace since Weaver. It seems like even when we draft someone, they usually come with a tag like "could develop into a mid rotation starter with #…

MIAMI — A game that began horribly for the Angels ended up as a victory and an addition to Mike Trout’s career highlight reel. The Angels overcame a four-run deficit in the first inning to beat the Miami Marlins, 7-4, on Monday night, including a 473-foot homer by Trout that tied the score in the sixth inning. It was Trout’s second homer of the night, and third in four games this season. Trout also drew a walk to load the bases in the eighth, setting up the go-ahead run to score on Taylor Ward’s subsequent groundout. Trout’s two homers – plus one from South Florida native Nolan Schanuel – helped the Angels overcome a first inning in which Chase Silseth gave up four ru…

MIAMI — José Soriano is no longer just a guy who showed some promise during spring training. A day after Soriano routinely hit 100 mph over three dominant innings out of the Angels’ bullpen, the team was still buzzing at the prospect of having that kind of weapon. “Him in the ’pen is definitely Kryptonite,” catcher Logan O’Hoppe said on Monday. “Everyone in the ’pen brings value, but especially this guy.” Manager Ron Washington said repeatedly that Soriano was “electric.” The Angels had seen Soriano before. Last year he had 3.64 ERA in 42 innings of relief. His four-seam fastball averaged 98.8 mph and his two-seamer was 96.6 mph. On Sunday in Baltimore, he averaged 1…

BALTIMORE — As Ron Washington watched the Baltimore Orioles beat up the Angels over the first two games of this season-opening series, he flashed back to what he’d seen from the Orioles earlier in their rebuilding. “I watched them when they were coming, when they were young and getting their tails beat regularly,” the Angels manager said. “Now they learned how to play. They learned how to win ballgames. I watched them when they weren’t winning ballgames. They’ve come a long ways.” Washington was then asked if his team, which is also fairly young, might be able to follow the Orioles trajectory. “We don’t think that — we will be,” Washington said forcefully. “But we have…

BALTIMORE — In the third game of the season, the Angels finally showed what their pitchers can do. After allowing 24 runs in the first two games, the Angels beat the Baltimore Orioles, 4-1, on Sunday to salvage the final game of the season-opening series. Left-hander Reid Detmers worked five strong innings and then right-hander José Soriano delivered three electric innings, cracking 100 mph with 12 of his 34 pitches. Closer Carlos Estévez worked the ninth for his first save of the year. They combined to allow three singles. Detmers gave up one run, striking out seven. He dominated outside of a shaky second inning, when the Orioles scored a run on two walks, a hit batte…

BALTIMORE — You can update “it’s only one game” to “it’s only two games.” The Angels were blown out by the Baltimore Orioles 13-4 on Saturday, after losing by eight runs in the opener two days earlier. The Orioles are arguably the best team in the American League, while the Angels are expected to finish fourth in the American League West, so merely losing two games should not raise any eyebrows. However, the way they played in the two games is certainly disturbing for the Angels and their fans. The Angels’ -17 run differential in their first two games was the worst in franchise history, and tied for the seventh worst in major-league history. It was the first time the …

The Angels have heard and read what the baseball world thinks of their chances this season. After winning 73 games and losing Shohei Ohtani, the Angels are widely expected to finish fourth in the American League West, missing the playoffs for the 10th consecutive season. “No one in this clubhouse gives a (expletive) what they are saying,” left-hander Patrick Sandoval said. “No one cares what’s going on outside this clubhouse. Everyone has tunnel vision. I think that can only work in our favor. I don’t think we’re gonna give in to what the media, the fans, our fans, whatever they’re saying. We believe in what’s here. We believe in each other.” Catcher Logan O’Hoppe summ…

Did it bother anyone else that Reid threw a no hitter and never got anything for it? They didn’t give him a bobblehead or anything at all, but we got like 10 Ohtani and Trout bobbleheads instead. And now they gave the opening day starter spot to Sandoval. The disrespect from this organization toward its players achievements needs to stop.

It's a lengthy interview. Read the whole thing if you can. A couple of excerpts: "When the offseason started, you said two things. One, that you guys would be aggressive. And two, that you’d heard from agents that their clients wanted to play in Anaheim. But at the end of the day, payroll is $41 million lower. How does that square? Fair question. We were aggressive, especially in the trade market. There were players we liked in the trade market that we felt like could really help the club. But what we were losing, we couldn’t stomach. Some of the players that were on this roster, we really, really like. Some of the players that are in our minor leagues, regardl…

BALTIMORE — As Patrick Sandoval was analyzing what went wrong during his forgettable Opening Day start on Thursday, he took some solace in the fact that it’s just one game in a long season. And this season, he won’t have to wait quite as long to try again. The Angels now have a traditional five-man rotation. That’s standard procedure in major league baseball, but something the Angels haven’t done in years. Because of the unique circumstances of having Shohei Ohtani, the Angels used a six-man rotation almost exclusively in recent years. While the Angels loved having a pitcher of Ohtani’s caliber, they also dealt with logistical problems because they would not use him o…
