ANAHEIM — The Angels took advantage of the Boston Red Sox again. An eighth-inning throwing error from catcher Connor Wong set up the go-ahead run in the Angels’ 9-5 victory over the Red Sox on Monday night. The Angels scored their other five runs in a first inning in which Boston starter Walker Buehler walked four batters and hit two. The Angels also got out of a jam because of some questionable Red Sox baserunning. Earlier this month in Boston, the Red Sox made four errors in a game the Angels won 4-3 in 10 innings. The only negative on the night was that closer Kenley Jansen left the game with an injury after throwing four pitches in the ninth. There was no immediat…

ANAHEIM — Angels manager Ron Washington will be out indefinitely because of health concerns, and bench coach Ray Montgomery will manage Friday night’s series opener against the Houston Astros, General Manager Perry Minasian announced. Washington, 73, experienced shortness of breath and appeared fatigued toward the end of a four-game series against the Yankees. He was cleared by Yankees doctors to fly home with the team Thursday night and underwent a series of medical tests in Southern California on Friday. The Angels would not go into detail about Washington’s symptoms, but the manager felt well enough to address the team along with Minasian on Friday afternoon, and he …

For me, this is a huge trade target. He is in his prime with years of control. Outside of Adell, I am will to pay the price to get this guy. Sign Rendon and Ryu, and trade for Hendricks.

ANAHEIM – Jack Kochanowicz will start Monday night’s series opener against the Boston Red Sox, giving the Angels right-hander another chance to try out his new toy, a one-seam changeup that he leaned heavily on in last Wednesday’s 5 ⅓-inning, two-hit, two-run, eight-strikeout effort in a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees. “I was definitely happy with the way it was coming out,” said Kochanowicz, who induced seven of his 12 swinging strikes in Yankee Stadium with his changeup. “When you’re getting swings like that, you know it’s working.” Pitching coach Barry Enright suggested the grip change–one that helps Kochanowicz get the same spin on his changeup that he does on hi…

NEW YORK — The Angels broke their pattern of keeping the same pitchers and catchers together. Logan O’Hoppe broke it. The Angels’ catcher went into Manager Ron Washington’s office and asked to catch right-hander Kyle Hendricks on Tuesday. Hendricks had worked with Travis d’Arnaud in 11 of his first 13 games. Washington relented, after checking with Hendricks, “because (O’Hoppe) is our guy.” “We’re gonna give him a chance to catch them all, but we’ve got to do it when we think it’s right,” Washington said. “Right now, Kyle thinks O’Hoppe is ready to be back there with him.” D’Arnaud had been catching Hendricks and Yusei Kikuchi, and O’Hoppe had been catching the other…

Since the Astros joined the AL West, the Angels are 80-127 against the Astros (.386 W%). Since 2016, the Angels are 50-100 against the Astros (.333 W%). Obviously the Astros have been good and the Angels haven’t, which explains a lot of this.

ANAHEIM — Perfection took a pounding on Sunday, the Houston Astros soiling Angels reliever Hunter Strickland’s previously unblemished ERA during a four-run, sixth-inning rally that propelled them to an 8-7 come-from-behind victory in Angel Stadium. Strickland had not allowed an earned run in 15⅔ innings of his first 14 appearances when he replaced starter Kyle Hendricks with no outs, a runner on first base and the Angels leading 5-4 on the strength of Nolan Schanuel’s three-run homer in the fifth. Seven batters, three hits, two walks, 30 pitches and four runs later, Strickland stormed off the mound with a 1.62 ERA, and the first-place Astros were on their way to a serie…

ANAHEIM — Yoán Moncada was supposed to be back by now. Not only is the Angels’ third baseman still on the injured list, but the slow progress is eating at him. “Honestly, I feel very frustrated,” Moncada said through an interpreter on Saturday. “I feel very low energy because of this. I want to play and I’m going to keep doing my thing so I can get better as quick as I can.” Moncada has been bothered by a sore right knee for just over three weeks. For the first few days of the injury, he tried to play through the discomfort. He had to leave two games because he aggravated the injury. When the Angels finally placed him on the injured list, Manager Ron Washington said h…

ANAHEIM — The Angels enjoyed a rare comfortable victory on Saturday night. While they have a better record than expected this season, that’s mostly because of their success in tight games. Their run differential was still negative-61 because they had been on the wrong end of most of the blowout games. They began to cut into that figure with a 9-1 victory against the Houston Astros, powered by a strong start from José Soriano and two Logan O’Hoppe homers. It was the first time since April 10 that the Angels (37-39) had won a game by more than five runs. It had been a month since they’d won a game by more than four runs, and those back-to-back 10-5 victories in Sacrament…

ANAHEIM — Christian Moore fulfilled a childhood dream this week when the New York City native got to play in Yankee Stadium for the first time, but the rookie second baseman’s Angel Stadium debut on Friday night was far more memorable. Moore, the eighth overall pick in the 2024 draft out of Tennessee, hit his first major-league home run, a game-tying solo shot to center field in the seventh inning, and preserved that tie with a superb diving catch of Yainer Diaz’s 109-mph line drive with two runners on to end the top of the eighth. Moore had a chance to script an even more dramatic finish, but he struck out with the bases loaded to end the eighth, and the Angels ran out…

ANAHEIM — Robert Stephenson went from having a very common injury with a lengthy timeline to a rare one with no timeline at all. In his second game back in the big leagues after a 13-month rehab from Tommy John surgery, the Angels’ right-hander felt a pain in his bicep that he said Saturday has been diagnosed as a stretched nerve. “Kind of a weird injury, to be honest,” Stephenson said. “Unfortunately, I don’t really know what the timetable is, because they just don’t react the same way. You can’t treat it like a muscle or a ligament or anything, so kind of just waiting for it to settle down before I start throwing again.” Stephenson said he was told the most recent si…

NEW YORK — The Angels had to settle for a very good series in the Bronx instead a historic one. With a chance to complete their first four-game sweep of the New York Yankees, the Angels lost 7-3 in the series finale Thursday afternoon. After winning the first three games in New York, the Angels (36-38) could still feel relatively good about themselves because of the way they bounced back from losing all three games over the weekend in Baltimore. On Thursday, they didn’t pitch or hit well enough to complete the sweep. The only runs the Angels managed were solo homers by Mike Trout, Jo Adell and Taylor Ward. The Angels had only two other hits. That’s been a pattern for…

NEW YORK — Jo Adell has played 100 games since making a decision that may have changed his career. Before the Angels’ game July 30, 2024, Adell decided that the leg kick he’d used for his entire career wasn’t working, so he scrapped it and simply tapped his toe. Since then, Adell has hit .230 with 19 homers and a .756 OPS. The major-league average OPS is .712. About three weeks ago, Adell actually began using a more controlled version of the kick he used before. He calls it more of a “lift.” Adell has hit .290 with eight homers and a 1.030 OPS in 21 games since going to the lift. “The way I was lifting my leg a year ago, versus the way that I do it now, are two totall…

NEW YORK — Just when the Angels were on their way to another huge missed opportunity, they caught a break. New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe booted a routine double play ball – twice – and it allowed the Angels to score the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. That was the crack in the door the Angels needed to squeak out a 3-2 victory on Wednesday night, as they took the first three games of this four-game series in the Bronx. Starter Jack Kochanowicz gave up only two solo homers in 5⅓ strong innings, and then four relievers shut down the Yankees the rest of the way. The Angels (36-37) could have had a comfortable lead if they had capitalized on any of their fir…

NEW YORK — The Angels continue to have a mixed bag of imperfect pieces they are trying to wedge into right field while Mike Trout remains locked into the DH spot. Jorge Soler, who is primarily a DH, has been playing most of the time in right field lately, but on Wednesday he came up with a stiff back. That led Manager Ron Washington to put Luis Rengifo into right. Rengifo has played 32 games in right in his major league career, but for only three innings since 2023. “The reports I got from the organization are that Rengifo can play right field,” Washington said. “If he’s ever going to play right field, this is the place to put him.” The short porch in right in Yankee …

Good article from Blum. Excerpts: "They drove to San Diego the following day, where the Angels were starting a new series. A pregame stadium tour took them on the field, all for one more shot at Trout. Aaron, normally shy, broke character. “Mike Trout,” he yelled repeatedly. His father’s eyes widened. “I’m like, ‘Dang buddy, you’re shooting your shot.’” Trout looked over and put up a finger, indicating an unspoken agreement between player and fan. He’d come and sign as soon as he could. They waited, and waited, until the tour guide — who’d already allowed the pair to stay an extra 10 minutes — was forcing them to leave. Trout was still in the…
