Tyler Anderson’s All-Star-worthy performance on the mound has not gotten the Angels far. They are hoping, though, that what he has done to get himself to his second All-Star Game can make an impact on an organization that is still trying to get more out of its pitchers. “He’s a tremendous role model, because his work ethic is impeccable,” Angels manager Ron Washington said before Anderson headed off to Arlington, Texas, for his second All-Star Game in three years. “His work ethic is to a fault and his work ethic is old school. He comes out and he does what he has to do even when he doesn’t feel like doing it. And the way he handled himself through adversity, it rubs off…

ANAHEIM — As Angels scouting director Tim McIlvaine was describing the things he likes about first-round pick Christian Moore on Sunday, he dropped the name Ron Washington. “I think once he gets in this environment too, with the way Wash and his guys run everything, I think he’s going to excel here,” McIlvaine said. Given that the Angels previous two first-round picks — Zach Neto and Nolan Schanuel — were both the first in their class to reach the majors, that obviously raised the question of how soon the second baseman might be in the big leagues. McIlvaine chuckled, and made no predictions. “We’re gonna let him go at his own pace,” McIlvaine said shortly after the p…

ANAHEIM – Angels shortstop Zach Neto bounded off the field after taking grounders before the Angels’ 3-2 comeback victory Sunday over the Seattle Mariners, came right toward me, waiting there to ask him what he’s learned from Ron Washington. Before I could even ask, Washington answered, interrupting politely to deliver something of a pop quiz: “Excuse me one second: Why’d you miss that ball?” For a second, Neto seemed stumped. The 72-year-old manager, a baseball lifer who began his big league career with the Dodgers 24 years before the 23-year-old Neto was born, reenacted the play twice. And then Neto got it; he’d tried to play it on a hop when he shouldn’t have. That …

ANAHEIM — As Taylor Ward described what happened to his production lately, he didn’t even need to say the words to make his point. “I just continue to turn the page on certain situations,” Ward said. “Just to have a better one thought. I started thinking in the wrong direction.” After Ward made this indirect admission, manager Ron Washington was much more clear. “I hate to go back to it, but he got hit,” Washington said. “Since he got hit, he’s been giving away the outside part of the plate and shying off the ball inside. And the only one to correct that is Taylor. Other that that, there’s nothing wrong with Taylor Ward. He’s just got to regain his courage.” Ward was …

With Trout likely returning post-All-Star break, should we consider moving him to DH full-time or close to preserve his health and longevity? This shift would allow him to focus on hitting while hopefully reducing his risk of injury by taking him off his feet in the outfield. Injuries have been a major issue for Trout, and reducing his workload on defense could help mitigate this. At this point in his career, we need his bat in the lineup for 140+ games more than him running around in the outfield. What are your thoughts? Ideally my line-up once Trout returns would be' 1. Rendon 3B/DH 2. Trout DH/OF 3. Schanuel 1B 4. Ward Lf 5. O'hoppe C/DH …

ANAHEIM — Two of the pitchers the Angels hope will eventually get them out of this mess showed their stuff on Saturday night. José Soriano didn’t have his best stuff, and then Ben Joyce clearly did, and they combined for the first seven innings of the Angels’ 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Even better for the Angels, they did it on a night that 43,273 were at Angel Stadium, allowing them to see the team’s future while also getting beach towels and watching fireworks. Soriano, a 25-year-old right-hander in his first season as a starter, has at times been electric this season, although he’s struggled to regain that form ever since missing time with an abdominal i…

ANAHEIM — Three days before Willie Calhoun’s walk-off two-run homer Friday, Calhoun was sitting on the bench when Jo Adell struck out to end a game. Angels coaches wanted Calhoun to pinch-hit for Adell in that spot at the end of Tuesday’s game, but manager Ron Washington stuck with Adell for a simple reason. “I wanted him to feel that,” Washington said on Saturday. “That was a growing moment for him. And I wanted him to feel it. There will be many more moments like that when he’s going to come through for us, simply because of the (opportunity) he got.” Adell is hitting .183, including .127 over his last 154 plate appearances. Ever since an encouraging start to the sea…

If there is an aspect of the Angels team over the last five years that is most disappointing and most emblematic of their organizational woes as a whole, it is the outfield. 2019: The Great Outfield of the Future Dial back five years to the end of 2019. Mike Trout was coming off his third MVP season, having just turned 28 years old. According to Baseball America, the Angels had three outfielders in the top 100 prospects: #3 Jo Adell #43 Brandon Marsh #72 Jordyn Adams Oh, and Taylor Ward--having fully transitioned from C the year before and breaking out as a hitter in 2018--was mashing in AAA (.306/.427/.584 in 511 PA). The future of the …

ANAHEIM — Willie Calhoun finished the game the way he started on Friday night. Calhoun blasted a two-run, walk-off homer in the 10th inning to lift the Angels to a 6-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners in the second game of their four-game series on Friday night at Angel Stadium. Calhoun, who had hit just one homer since May 12, also hit a two-run homer in the first to help the Angels end a seven-game losing streak against their American League West rivals. His third career multi-homer game – capped by his no-doubt shot to right field – gave the Angels just their third victory in the past nine games. Angels starter Tyler Anderson, the Angels’ sole All-Star selection, a…

ANAHEIM — Angels manager Ron Washington has never had more confidence in his bullpen than he does now. His relievers still owned the third-highest ERA in the majors (4.62) heading into Friday’s game against the visiting Seattle Mariners, but the same bullpen has posted a 2.25 ERA over the past 22 games, considerably better than the 5.50 mark through the first 71. Leading the way have been Washington’s most high-leverage relievers, Ben Joyce, Hunter Strickland and closer Carlos Estevez. Joyce and Strickland have not allowed an earned run in their past 12⅓ innings and Estevez has not surrendered a run in his past 13⅓ innings. “Overall, we’re throwing a lot more strikes,…

ANAHEIM — A day after Jack Kochanowicz spent his first day in a big league clubhouse, standing in front of reporters and telling them about his dream come true, it became a nightmare. The Angels brought Kochanowicz for his major league debut on Thursday, and he gave up four runs in the first inning of an 11-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners. Kochanowicz made it through three innings, and he was charged with five runs. The Angels’ rotation has been an issue for more than a month, starting with Reid Detmers’ demotion to Triple-A and continuing with Patrick Sandoval’s Tommy John surgery. That’s left two holes in the rotation that the Angels have been unable to fill with any…

ANAHEIM — Ron Washington said Hunter Strickland refused to have a night off on Wednesday, which was no surprise to the Angels manager. “He was one of those guys that were on fumes,” Washington said, “but he refused not to take the ball because of the situation we were in. He stepped up and said he will take the ball.” Washington said Strickland and Carson Fulmer are two relievers “that I’ll go in a foxhole with and die in that foxhole with them, because they never deny the baseball.” Strickland pitched the least of the four relievers who brought home the Angels’ 7-2 victory over the Texas Rangers, but he was also the only one who had pitched the night before. Stricklan…

ANAHEIM — As his success would suggest, Ben Joyce is ready for the next step as a major league reliever. Angels manager Ron Washington said Joyce is now one of the pitchers the Angels would consider for save situations if closer Carlos Estévez is not available. Luis Garcia is also in that group. That’s particularly relevant because Estévez is likely to be traded before the July 30 deadline, and Garcia might also be moved. That could clear the way for Joyce in the ninth inning. “Maybe when Esty is down and if Garcia has been used, (Joyce) will be our guy we use to close games,” Washington said. “No doubt about it.” Joyce had a 3.65 ERA going into Tuesday night’s game,…

By Ryan Falla, AngelsWin.com Staff Reporter The biggest asset a young ballplayer can bring into their initial exposures to the professional game is confidence. Above the fastball, the control, the pitchability, and many other factors, confidence is often what separates the amateurs from the budding professionals. This extends beyond baseball and into all of life, and if there is anyone who understands this sentiment deeply it would be the freshly nominated Futures Game invitee (and Top 100 MLB Prospect) Caden Dana. Dana’s reputation has written its own story as he makes the slow climb to the Major Leagues as a member of the Angels organization, and though time is a f…

ZACH NETO: Currently on pace for 24 doubles, 20 HR, 20 SB, 40 BB over 161 G Out of 176 plate appearances on the year, his last 100 of them are looking pretty good: .309/.350/.575/.925 with a reasonable .354 BABip. This is cherry-picking, yes, but I also don't think anyone expected a .900+ OPS from him. Starting to look a little like the Trea Turner-lite I hoped for. A 20/20 season is in reach. The power and contact have been a little better than expected and will probably come back to earth some. He's striking out a lot (on pace for 160 K) but not unexpected for a 23-year old that almost went straight to bigs. NOLAN SCHANUEL: First 54 …

ANAHEIM — Mickey Moniak is still trying to climb out of the hole that he dug in the first two months of the season. Moniak hit a three-run homer to provide the big blow in the Angels’ 7-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night. The Angels (38-54) snapped their three-game losing streak by playing a solid all-around game, starting with Moniak’s second-inning blast. Moniak, who also singled, is still hitting .198 with a .567 OPS, the result of a mostly disappointing season. Since mid-June, he’s had some better stretches, amounting to a .256 average and .772 OPS over his last 98 plate appearances. He’s still gotten regular playing time through it all because Mi…

ANAHEIM — The Angels have a new piece to try in their patchwork rotation. Right-hander Jack Kochanowicz will make his major league debut with a start against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night. Kochanowicz will be the 12th pitcher to start for the Angels, who are trying just about anything to fill a rotation that lost Patrick Sandoval, Reid Detmers and Chase Silseth to injuries and/or poor performance. Kochanowicz is the Angels’ No. 7 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He’s ranked No. 13 by Baseball America. “It’s just been obviously a lifelong dream and just kind of at a loss for words,” Kochanowicz said on Wednesday. “Just so excited to get out here.” The 22-…
