The Angels Pythagorean W-L is: 39-49, 379 Runs Scored / 428 Runs Allowed = -49 run differential 4.53 Total ERA - 24th 4.11 Starter ERA 5.06 Reliever ERA Team has only 2 decent starters and a decent enough back end of the bullpen with Detmers and Jansen. Other than that, the pitching is just not there. .297 OBP - 26th .701 team OPS - 21st Most of the scoring is done VIA solo shots cause the team is abysmal at getting on base. They are currently playing with only 6 batters who are competent, 5 if you count O'Hoppe. Stevens, Rengifo, Wade/Compero/Soler are pretty much auto-outs. So, opposing teams really just have to figure out how to get…

ANAHEIM — A week after Robert Stephenson began to throw, he felt well enough to try again. The Angels relief pitcher said the beginning of his throwing program last Monday didn’t go as well as hoped, so he took another week off. After trying again seven days later, the right-hander was encouraged. “It definitely feels a lot better, especially today,” Stephenson said. “Just from from last Monday, it feels a lot better, and I’m really encouraged by it. So I feel like I can actually fully start to ramp up now. Before I was kind of nervous about even throwing, but it feels good today.” Stephenson was out only 13 months from Tommy John surgery before returning to the mound …

ANAHEIM — The Angels got the clutch hits they were missing all weekend, and a clutch walk to end it. After a nightmare series of one-run losses and missed offensive opportunities, the Angels beat the Texas Rangers, 6-5, on Monday night, on Nolan Schanuel’s game-ending bases-loaded walk. Luis Rengifo led off the bottom of the ninth with a double, his second hit of the game. An out later, Kevin Newman punched a single into left, sending Rengifo to third. The Rangers intentionally walked Zach Neto to load the bases for Schanuel, who took a wide 3-and-2 pitch to end it. The Angels also had a pair of two-out RBI hits to erase a one-run deficit in the sixth. Travis d’Arnau…

LOS ANGELES — Pinpointing Clayton Kershaw’s race to 3,000 strikeouts was easier to predict than, say, Sunday’s announcement, when the 18-year veteran was added to the National League All-Star team as a “Legends Pick.” The surprise selection was made by commissioner Rob Manfred for Kershaw’s contributions to the game as a three-time Cy Young Award winner and 2014 MVP during a Hall of Fame-worthy 18-year career. Kershaw and fellow starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto were named as reserves to the National League roster that will be managed by Dave Roberts. Already named as starters were Shohei Ohtani at designated hitter, Will Smith as catcher and Freddie Freeman at first base. At…

TORONTO — The first half-season of Yusei Kikuchi’s three-year deal with the Angels has been an unqualified success. Kikuchi was named to the All-Star team on Sunday afternoon. He was the only Angels player picked to the team. General manager Perry Minasian announced Kikuchi’s selection in front of the whole team. “All my teammates were really happy for me,” Kikuchi said through his interpreter. “And Perry came in and delivered a really heartfelt message. It really got to me. It felt a little emotional. After that, I just have this feeling that I want to do something special this team this year.” Kikuchi, who signed a three-year, $63-million deal with the Angels, has a…

https://www.mlb.com/app/atbat/milb/prospects/top100/harry-ford-695670?affiliateId=milbapp-android_referral That baby is ready to pop from the Mariner's womb. Only, he's somewhat logjamed not to disrupt Cal Raleigh's season behind the plate while they also have Mitch Garver ahead of him on C depth. Ford's defensive skill set also apparently a WIP. Still, across all offensive stats, we have a potential immediate impact MLB lineup performer, from what I can see, dragged from being inserted. He's already eclipsed his RBI total in AAA this year from full season AA last year, wherever I can get him in up here, I'd find it! As I also understand the …

TORONTO — The Angels wasted their weekend in Canada. For three games, they made the least of their scoring opportunities, resulting in three straight one-run losses, two in extra innings. The Angels lost 3-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, leaving 12 runners on base and going 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Their pitching was good enough to win each of the games, but the Angels (43-46) were never able to get a clutch hit to take the lead late in any of the games. The Angels’ only runs on Friday came on a three-run homer, and they were otherwise hitless in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position. They were 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position o…

TORONTO — Nolan Schanuel noticed something strange a few weeks ago. He didn’t draw a walk in 12 consecutive games. The Angels first baseman said he had not changed anything about his plate discipline, but there was a difference in the way he was being pitched. It then dawned on him that it was because Mike Trout was hitting behind him. “I think with him being behind me, they were kind of trying to get me out instead of getting to him,” Schanuel said. “So I think that kind of equates to what has been happening.” What’s been happening is that Schanuel has seen the steady improvement in his numbers continue, particularly in the power department. Schanuel has hit five ho…

TORONTO — The Angels’ offensive performance Friday night was all too typical. Jo Adell hit a three-run homer. The Angels didn’t score another run. The Angels have scored 49.5% of their runs on home runs this season, which is the highest percentage in the majors. The big-league average is 40%. That explains how the Angels can rank fifth in the majors in homers while being 18th in the most important category: runs. “Part of the construction of the team is that,” interim manager Ray Montgomery said. “With that, there’s going to be highs and lows. You’re going to have some trade-offs. I’m not complaining about having home runs and scoring runs. It’s usually a good thing, …

The free agent market is very deep this offseason: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/12/2025-26-mlb-free-agents.html The Angels have about $35M-40M coming off the payroll, with Anderson, Jansen, Moncada, and Rengifo the bulk of that number. You only have one more year of Rendon at $38M so you could backload any potential deals. I think a number of high-profile free agents make sense this year: -Kyle Tucker. Will the bidding get too insane for Arte? The numbers speak for themselves. He will be a middle-of-the-order bat for many years and will likely age gracefully because of his excellent plate discipline. Only 29 years old next year. -Ranger Suárez. He ha…

TORONTO — The failure that cost the Angels Saturday’s game happened long before Ryan Zeferjahn allowed the winning run. The Angels lost 4-3 to the Toronto Blue Jays in 11 innings, the same score as the extra-inning loss the day before. Again, they could look back on missed opportunities to score earlier in the game. The Angels were 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position a day after going 1 for 10 in that situation. On Saturday, the Angels had the bases loaded with one out twice in the first three innings, and managed just one run each time. After that, all they could manage was a single run in the seventh inning. They failed to cash in their automatic runner in the…

TORONTO — Jo Adell delivered in a huge clutch moment on Friday night. Unfortunately for the Angels, no one else could. Adell’s game-tying three-run homer in the seventh inning was the Angels’ only hit in 10 at-bats with runners in scoring position, and they lost 4-3 to the Toronto Blue Jays in 10 innings. Sam Bachman made a throwing error after fielding a bunt in the bottom of the 10th, allowing the winning run to score and sending the Angels (43-44) back to one game under .500 for the fourth time in the past week and a half. The Angels never led in this one, despite several opportunities. They wasted Adell’s leadoff double in the sixth when the game was scoreless. Th…

That would be the 5th-lowest since 1901 among players with at least 250 plate appearances (this is pulled from Baseball Reference, so it has Drury's stats through yesterday--but he's at .155 after today's game). Bill Bergen, who was the Jeff Mathis of his day, has 3 of the bottom 10 batting averages in this group. Drury is in impressive company.

ATLANTA — José Soriano and the Angels rebounded nicely on Thursday night. The right-hander pitched seven scoreless innings in a 5-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves, which helped him bury the memory of his nightmare outing last week and the team’s disheartening loss a night earlier. The Angels (43-43) could have swept the Braves if they had held a sixth-inning lead on Wednesday, but they settled for winning the series. They were two outs away from a second shutout when Brock Burke gave up a ninth-inning homer. Shortstop Zach Neto led the offense with three hits, including a home run. He had been hitless in his first 13 at-bats after injuring his right shoulder on a head…

ATLANTA — Christian Moore’s diagnosis of a sprained left thumb is one of those occasions when a player feels relief even as he’s going on the injured list. When Moore jammed the thumb of his glove hand into the ground while trying to make a diving stop on Wednesday night, he and many watching feared the worst. Tests showed nothing requiring surgery, so the Angels’ rookie second baseman said he is hoping to be back in a couple of weeks. Interim manager Ray Montgomery suggested that might be a “best-case scenario” and he stopped short of giving a timetable. “I think it’s pretty much up to my body and how it heals itself,” Moore said. “Hopefully I can be out there in two …

ATLANTA — It took seven minutes in the sixth inning for the Angels to go from a two-run lead to a five-run deficit, on their way to a nightmarish loss. Just moments after second baseman Christian Moore left the game with an injury suffered while diving for a ground ball, Ryan Zeferjahn gave up the first of two homers in a 16-pitch disaster, sending the Angels to an 8-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night. Moore, the Angels’ top hitting prospect, dove to his right to try to field a ground ball and came up writhing in pain, holding his left hand. There was no immediate word on the severity of Moore’s injury. Just as Moore was walking off the field with a train…
