Fish Oil reacted to Hufflepuff in The Angels signed top tier International prospects Nelson Rada ($1.8M) & Randy De Jesus ($1.2M)
I believe they said he has good baseball IQ and a good attitude as well...

Fish Oil reacted to Angelsjunky in Trout vs Griffey
Griffey's career as a Mariner is particularly easy to compare, because it ran for his age 19-29 seasons, just like Trout so far.
Griffey (1989-99): 1535 games, .299/.380/.569, 398 HR, 167 SB, 144 wRC+, 68.5 fWAR
Trout (2011-21): 1288 games, .305/.419/.583, 310 HR, 203 SB, 172 wRC+, 77.8 fWAR
One thing to note is that Griffey had played quite a few more games--1535 to 1288 (+247)--both because he almost a full season at age 19, but also was generally healthier.
But as you can see, Trout was significantly better, mostly because he walked a lot more. But also, Griffey put up those numbers in a much higher offense context, thus those triple-slash numbers aren't quite as impressive as they look, as evinced by the huge difference in wRC+.
Or to put that in context, among all players through age 29, here is how they rank in wRC+ and WAR:
Griffey: 71st in wRC+, 13th in WAR
Trout: 9th in wRC+, 5th in WAR
Trout's wRC+ of 172 is between Musial/Mantle at 173 and Pujols/Mize at 169, whereas Griffey is tied with players like Paul Goldschmict, Arky Vaughan, and Todd Helton.
Up until a couple years ago, Trout was 1st in WAR at the same age, but due to the covid-shortened season and then last year's injury, has fallen behind, but he's right between Ruth and A-Rod. Griffey is right between Aaron and Mathews.
One more thing. Trout was a much better baserunner, with 62.1 career BsR compared to Griffey's 7.9 through age 29, but Griffey was a better defender with 86.0 Def runs vs. Trout's 17.6.

Fish Oil reacted to Tank in Ty Buttrey announced he intends to return to MLB
after being away from the game for a year (and having no idea what kind of baseball stuff he's been doing in that time, if any), i'm going to figure he'll be in AAA at best to start the season, especially if this lockout continues.

Fish Oil reacted to Lou in Ty Buttrey announced he intends to return to MLB
lol
"I just want to be regular Ty"
He learned quickly that being regular Ty doesn't pay very well.

Fish Oil reacted to Angelsjunky in 2022 Angels ZIPS Projections From Fangraphs
That said, some interesting tid-bits in the write-up. For instance, I agree with this take wholeheartedly:
At this point, I'm not sure what the Angels can do about this. I think this is why Doc and others have so emphasized depth. There's no way to not be hit hard by losing Trout, but there's a difference between replacing him with a 0 WAR guy and a 2 WAR guy.
I really think ZiPS--and many on this forum--are too bearish about Marsh. Marsh is a ball-player: he has that "it" factor that makes players good. I'm not saying he's going to be a star next year, but he's going to be better than ZiPs suggests (.249/.319/.367, 1.1 WAR). I see something more like .270/.340/.400 and 2.5 to 3 WAR, with gradual improvement over the next two or three years.

Fish Oil reacted to greginpsca in Michael Lorenzen in the rotation.
He is Heaney's replacement. His contract was also the exact amount as Heaney's. Just hoping for a different outcome. Thor is basically the replacement for Cobb, but for much more money. Hopefully more money equals a much better outcome. If not, we basically have the same team as last season.

Fish Oil reacted to Erstad Grit in Angels re-sign Raisel Iglesias (4 years, $58 million), DFA Selman
You don't want Stroman because his Twitter behaviors hurt your feelings?
-
Fish Oil reacted to Jason in Save the Offseason
Sign Stroman and Iglesias and I think its a successful offseason. It's not the best but most teams will probably say the same thing.

Fish Oil reacted to totdprods in Angels sign Aaron Loup (2 years, $15 million + $7.5M club option/$2M buyout), DFA Yan
The good: The Padres and Rays both went after him in two of the last three years
The bad: The Mets did the other year
In all seriousness, it's a really good add. I just hope it's not a move made not made to replace Iglesias or another closer, just an addition to the pen.
It's also pretty expensive. We're basically at $30m committed already of the expected $50m, with 1-2 SP, CL, a RP, and a back-up C at the minimum still needed.
Arte's spending this winter, or we're about to see a bunch of prospects traded, or we're going to see Thor as our #1 and Loup closing games.

Fish Oil reacted to stormngt in Noah Syndergaard - Angels Agree to 1-Year, $21 Million Deal
Wouldn't we have gotten better players with a trade in July than a 2nd round draft pick.
-
Fish Oil reacted to Taylor in Why did we get rid of Jim Edmonds?
Because Kent Bottenfield was the piece.

Fish Oil reacted to ten ocho recon scout in Rank your order of preference for these free agent starting pitchers for the Angels
Plus he's old and could fall off a cliff soon.
Dodgers would get his blue eye, and we'd get his brown eye....

Fish Oil reacted to Junkballer in Prominent Angels executive (via MLB Insider Robert Murray): Offseason plan is "pitching, pitching, pitching" "If you have a pulse and can throw, we're gonna be in on you"
Reminds me of the Kinison bit when love knocks on the door for the tenth time (at the 1:00 mark)

Fish Oil reacted to Revad in I like Angelswin.com much better, but HH has a point here.
Not really, most of us realize AW kicks ass.

Fish Oil reacted to T.G. in Mike Scioscia to interview for Padres managerial position?
I hope he lands the job.
-
Fish Oil reacted to AngelStew43 in Mike Scioscia to interview for Padres managerial position?
About time. The Padres would become a very dangerous group with Scioscia managing.

Fish Oil reacted to failos in Mike Scioscia to interview for Padres managerial position?
He should be the manager for the Angels

Fish Oil reacted to Inside Pitch in Angels reassign Matt Swanson
Swanson was the one guy I was sure would get canned once Perry got acclimated with the system. Nothing against the job Swanson did, more a case of believing the Minasian/Tamin combo would want to bring in their own guy. This is also the reason I said I didn't view the 2021 draft as Perry's - it was still Eppler's guys, and whatever scouting happened was done with those scouting principles in place.
Looking forward to seeing who they bring in and how they handle the draft next season.

Fish Oil reacted to Angel Oracle in How the 10 Playoff Teams Were Built
Good scouting leads to successful trades.

Fish Oil got a reaction from Angel Oracle in How the 10 Playoff Teams Were Built
Their continual budget situation is why they don't have a lot of drafted players. When their drafted players turn out good, they can't afford to keep them so they are traded for good young talent.

Fish Oil reacted to T.G. in What is Arte Moreno's goal for the Angels- on and off the field?
Prior to last season, it was widely known that in order for Eppler to keeps his job, the Angels had to win. They did not and he lost his job.
So... please explain to me how the narrative about Arte not caring about winning has any merit?
