NO NO NO!!!!  What good is a lock down bullpen if our starting pitching gives up 5 runs in 2 innings????  Tired of this crap.

my first choice would be Bauer + trade for another top or near top of the rotation arm
    2. Bauer + mediocre arm + cheap pen arm
    3. Bauer + cheap rotation arm + more expensive pen arm
    4. trade for TOR arm + mediocre pen arm + more expensive pen arm
and so on and so forth.  mixed in would be a cheap option to platoon in RF who could also play CF.
C is at the very bottom of my list.  In fact, I am fine with going into 2021 with what we have.

A couple people have suggested @Dtwncbad and someone else suggested taking on Heyward to get Darvish or Hendricks.  That’s the one I’d be ok with because he’s still really good defensively.

Now is the time for Arte to put his money where his mouth is when it comes to his desire to win.

Like others have mentioned the market is there for the taking. As it stands right now the only thing Arte will ever be remembered for is the guy who wasted Mike Trout’s career.

Quality AND quantity can be had this offseason. Do it.

This is precisely why Arte and company should try to capitalize on a potentially depressed market.  I highly doubt they will, but the team could end up ahead by spending in a season where nobody else is willing to spend or rather, spend on multiple pieces.

It sounds like it's not new but then again your suggestion is more of an option 3 which I believe that's what we've all been talking about.
Bauer then trade for someone is an option 3 which I prefer as well.
And to agree with you, yes I'd rather have the Bauer option and not the lower level / multiple guys option.

I'd go with the Bauer option as well.  Assuming that the Angels have done their appropriate due diligence and they are confident that Bauer will perform as one of the league's better pitcher for the next 3 years or so.
I can only think of a couple 100m+ pitching contracts that have been an absolute nightmare.  Jordan Zimmermann comes to mind.  Mike Hampton, Barry Zito, and Kevin Brown were awhile ago now.  Johan Santana was bad mostly because of injury.
The rest only went bad if they did toward the end.  Like Felix and a few others.
If you can avoid that 6th and 7th years then I think it's worth the risk.
We all still have 1yr contract PTSD due to Eppler as well.  It's still a viable way to get a good player without having to add additional risk of those mid market 3-4 year deals on guys that are 31-32 at the start.
The top guys are gonna get paid and the AAV for the mid market guys is still pretty decent but we're seeing 1-2yr deals so far.  Even before the bigger names set the market.  I think there will be deals to be had at the lower end of the market so I'd rather take the chance on getting a top player and then wait for those deals down the road for C, RF and pen help than settle for spending all your budget on mediocrity.

One thought regarding possible Marquez/Adell trade: at Coors Canaveral, pitches don’t break as much in the thin air.
Wouldn’t that make Adell more appealing to the Rockies?
    Marquez and Blackmon is intriguing.

Season will start around May 1 and they’ll play about 125 games.

    They’ll keep the universal DH.
    Theyll keep the expanded playoffs.
They’ll keep having a runner on second for extra innings.

I think you get depth by adding Bauer.
I'm not a "Bauer or Bust" person, but if he gets signed, our rotation looks like this:
Bauer, Bundy, Heaney, Canning, Barria/Sandoval/Ohtani/Suarez. That's 8 pitchers deep with Pena as an emergency guy.
@Dochalo mentioned that we want 11 pitchers for the "inevitable injuries" but that's not really a good way to set up a rotation. It's not about quantity as much as quality.
You need depth, absolutely. But adding that frontline guy pushes everyone back. Now let's say the Angels add Musgrove too (purely hypothetical, not advocating for him). This would be our rotation:
Bauer, Bundy, Heaney, Musgrove, Canning, Barria/Sandoval/Suarez/Ohtani.
That's insane depth, especially because I think Sandoval has #4 upside, and Ohtani could be even better than Bauer.
So my rant is basically: We don't need "depth guys". We need good pitchers to push the other guys back. This is why I think it's imperative we get two starters.

Everybody would like to have Snell.  And everybody would like to keep Adell.
I am not sure what people are thinking if they think Tampa would make a deal that doesn’t include Adell.
If Adell is too much to pay for a 27 year old front line starter with three more years of very affordable control, then what pitcher are you seriously thinking you are going to get for Adell?
Given the make up of the current Angel roster, the next three years is very, very important.
It is more important, by far, to have a Snell for the next three years than it is to have an Adell.
Yes he might end up a superstar.  And he might also end up being a glorified Cameron Maybin.  We don’t know, and you just gotta be comfortable with the range of possible outcomes on Adell, just as you have be comfortable with the range of outcomes with Snell (a couple of CY awards/lead the Angels to a ring, or TJ surgery three months into 2021).
Both teams have to believe they have the upside they need for their situation.
I dig having all the excitement of such a great prospect, but in the end he is a resource the team needs to use as best it can to create a winning mlb roster.
It is very reasonable to conclude that the best way to use this resource is to acquire a guy like Snell.

This season has been a blast. Every game mattered more. I think baseball can take a lesson from this for the future. I wouldn’t mind a shorter condensed version of the regular season to say 100 games and more teams in the playoffs. I’d prefer longer series in the playoffs to all 7 games series. But I enjoyed this season.

stanick88 reacted to Warfarin in How would you spend $40M this offseason?
I like your thoughts, and I agree that as much as I'd like Bauer, someone like Gausman is probably far more likely.
That said, I would be disinclined to trade Marsh at this point.  We need legit LHH more than RHH, so in that regard - I'd shoot higher and trade Adell.  With Trout and Rendon, we have two of the best RHH in the sport - we need some legit LHH to balance it out a bit.
I'd call up Detroit and inquire about Manning/Mize, but if not, then I'd call Cleveland up - they have no end in sight in terms of pitching, but they have no OF to speak of.
Using https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/, I proposed Adell + SS Jackson to CLE for SS Lindor + SP Pleasac, and it was determined to be fair value (Indians get 63 in value, Angels get 62.5 in value).
Assuming Lindor gets ~25mil in arbitration, and we sign Gausman (15mil/yr), then we have:
2B Fletcher, SS Lindor, CF Trout, 3B Rendon, 1B Walsh, LF Upton, DH Ohtani, RF Ward/Marsh, C Stassi
Bundy, Pleasac, Gausman, Heaney, Barria, Canning, Ohtani, etc..
If Ohtani can become the ace we hope that he can, then our rotation would actually be incredibly stacked.  Sandoval can then be converted into relief, where he's shown to be really good.
IMO, if I had 40mil to spend, that is what I'd do 🙂
While it's not as flashy as signing an ace like Bauer, if we lock up Lindor long-term (it's possible, with both Pujols and Upton's contracts expiring soon), then we'd have one of the best infield defenses in baseball with Rendon, Lindor, Fletcher, and Walsh.  Flash forward 2 years later, with Adams taking over in CF, and we'd likely have one of the best OF defenses in baseball too, with Adams in CF, Marsh in RF, and Trout in LF.

No. They are living with their parents.

It’s a simple question of minimum wage. They should be paid at least as much (per hour) as you get paid to work at McDonald’s, and a lot of them don’t.

I think there are 2 different discussions here.

    1. Did these guys get screwed out of the money they would have been paid normally? That’s debatable. They still got some money and it was probably not too far from what they would have gotten if they’d played, and they didn’t play.

    2. Should minor leaguers, under normal circumstances and when they are playing, be paid more. That’s not debatable to me. They aren’t even paid minimum wage, given the requirements of their job.

Yep. I always want them to win while I'm watching, but am happy either way. Either they win and it shows promise for next season or they lose and increase their chances of a high draft pick.
I'm also just hoping the best for the young guys, particularly Adell. He's getting his shot right now and given how young he is I just want to see him gradually improve and hopefully next season we'll see a true breakout.

I agree, except for Canning. I think Canning still has a pretty high ceiling if he can stay healthy and keep finding a way to keep his arm loose in between innings.
