Second Base got a reaction from NrM in Olney: Trumbo & Bourjos on Trade Block
I wouldn't trust the defensive WAR metrics as much as I'd trust your eye IP.  Yeah, Green was an awful defensive 2B but he also showed that he can hit at the major league level.  .280 with gap power should be what he does.  The Angels also have some amazing infield instructors in Alfredo Griffin, Gary Disarcina and now Omar Vizquel.

Green's actually quite the athlete.  If he'd be able to grow into a passable defensive 2B or 3B anywhere you'd think it'd be here.  In all fairness, this is the organization that helped make Segura and Amarista into passable shortstops when their skill sets dictated they'd be 2B.  We've seen Erick Aybar win a gold glove, Kendrick grow into an average or above average defensive 2B, Callaspo grow into a good defensive 3B, Luis Jimenez has made huge strides at 3B over the past couple years and Mark Trumbo become a decent defensive 1B when he was downright awful in the minors.

Complaining that he is being left off lists because of age and draft slot is one thing, calling someone an anti-semite is taking it way too far.

Second Base got a reaction from YouthofToday in Bourjos Trade Value?
Bourjos is the worst possible player to trade right now.  His value plummeted because he wasn't able to stay on the field.  He may not have a starting gig with the Angels next year, but the thing is, if they don't trade him and he plays up to his ability, he infuses the team with more speed, lots of hits, bunting ability, defense and immediately improves the pitching staff with his D in CF.

Do you want to trade a player that's capable of doing all that for cheap?  Furthermore, teams know he's capable of doing that and would definitely be interested in acquiring him, but by no means would they be willing to pay the price for it.

It's best to hold onto him for now.  If he plays well enough in Spring he can beat out Calhoun for a starting spot and then the Angels can trade one of the two at the deadline or after next year.

Odd decision. The Angels have a top 5 offense and a bottom 10 pitching staff, so they fire the hitting coach?

I seriously want Brian Wilson on this team, for multiple reasons.  1. He's a good reliever.  2. He's entertaining and not in the meltdown in the 9th inning type of way, but in the "you never know what he'll do next" way.....and 3. He puts butts in the seats.  He was loved in SF and all over Nor-Cal.  Still is really.

Bat-shit psycho or not, he's a competitor and if other teams are scared off by his behavior and the Angels can land him for only a couple or few million, I'd love it and support such a move (not that it means anything).

The Angels were definitely better than they were given credit for in the past couple years.  Coming up with Trout, Richards, Calhoun and Segura didn't happen by accident.

The farm system is incredibly weak right in the depth department right now.  Outside of the Top 10 it's murky.  There's still some high-end talent around though.  Green, Sappington, Morin, Alvarez, Lindsey, Cowart, Cron, Grichuk, Yarbrough and Stamets all bring something exciting to the table.

Second Base got a reaction from Jim in This will be a good team next year
I've said it before and I'll keep saying it.  A front-three of Weav, Wilson and Vargas wasn't nearly good enough to get the Angels into contention this season.  Why on Earth would it be next season?

If your reason is Richards then great, because just 2 months ago most of you were talking about how he'd never pan out or just end up as a reliever.  Richards is going to be a solid #3/4 SP next year but that's still not enough.

The only way an Angel-rotation of Weav, Wilson, Richards, and Vargas is adequate is if it's supplemented by a legitimate #2/3 SP.  Because the truth is, the offense will probably be without Kendrick and Trumbo (trades), the bullpen will be inconsistent, regardless of what moves Dipoto makes and Scioscia's going to make some player personnel mistakes next season just like he does every year.

I think the Angels can be good, but only if they fundamentally change the way they approach free agency and start running an intelligent organization.

AJ, I rather respect your opinion, but your idea on the rotation just isn't something I can get on board with.  Regardless of specifics, we know one thing from this year, a rotation of Weav, Wilson, Vargas and Hanson simply will not cut it in the AL West.  If the Angels want to win, they'll need to upgrade and in a big way.

I'm on board with Weav, Wilson and Richards.  Those guys slot well as a 1,2 and 5.  The issue is, the teams that are the most successful, have the best young pitching.  Even though Hanson has some value and Vargas was solid for the Angels, those two aren't going to be the difference between a sub-500 team and a playoff team.  The Angels need two very good starters to slot into the #3 and 4 spots.

I say they make a qualifying offer to Vargas, that way they get their early draft pick, then after that, deal Hanson for a decent prospect (you know the Royals will bring in SP wherever they can), then see if you can get a Hellickson type for non-essential personnel that still hold considerable value, like Kendrick, Cron, Grichuk and Yarbrough.

After that, it's just a matter of spending the money.  Garza or Kuroda.  Even Phil Hughes may not be an awful idea.

I would rather wait til the season plays out to look for trade options for Trumbo. If a team like the Pirates make the playoffs and have an early exit due to no offense, then they could be a great candidate.

Bourjos' value was already down in the offseason.  Had he stayed healthy this season his value would've been through the roof. Hitting .280/.330 with gold glove defense would be a normal season for him, if he stays healthy.

As it stands, I wouldn't be disappointed at all if we entered 2014 with him starting in CF, Trout in LF, Calhoun in RF/1B, Hamilton at DH/RF and Pujols at 1B/DH.

Trade market's the way I'd go I think.  Personally, after seeing the way the kids are playing and the energy they bring, I have no problem whatsoever trading both Trumbo and Kendrick to get 2 young SP that will help in the future.

Also, I have no idea if this is the way Arte works, but if he nixed a deal to the Dodgers that would've brought in both Withrow and Lee in return for Kendrick just because he has too much pride to deal with his neighbors, then that's awfully stupid.

I'm an AL fan, but if one way had  to go they should get rid of the DH, it's not real baseball, but I prefer the set up the way it has been. I'm not sure why we need to make everything the same, just like I'm not really sure why the AL and NL even need to play each other in the first place.

I agree, Jason - but there's enough of a chance (say, 10%?) that its worth mentioning.

With 20 games left, Trout's at .338. 20 games ago he was at .330, so that's an 8-point gain.

The Tigers have 19 games left and Cabrera's at .353. 19 games ago he was at .360, so that's a 7-point loss.

    .338 + .008 = .346

    .353 - .007 = .346

Unlikely - probably very unlikely - but possible.
