You may remember an in-depth post I wrote late last year (I think) in which I looked at World Series champs from the last two decades and discovered that many of them didn't have a true "ace," but all except one had at least three good #3 types, or something like two #2s and two #4s. Meaning, it is really about who your top four (or so) starters are, at least as a baseline, and less about how good your best starter is.
Right now I'd call Ohtani a #2. He is close to being a #1, but given that he only starts once a week, his value is closer to a #2 than a true #1. I think to be considered a true number one, innings count. Ohtani's at 20 starts and 112 IP and will probably end the year around 130, assuming he makes three more starts. Even 25/150 over a full year is somewhat disqualifying, in my view; you really want 28/180 at least to be a #1.
Sandoval and Suarez look like #3s, or at least close to it. Both may peak as #2-3s, but right now they're in the #3-4 range.
Detmers and Rodriguez have similar upside, but aren't yet proven. For now I think you have to consider them #4s, with #2-3 potential, maybe a tad higher for Rodriguez, although his health concerns make his upside similar to Detmers'.
At this point, I'd be happy if Canning turned out to be a solid #3-4, although I wouldn't want to pencil him as anything more than a #4-5 right now. I think Daniel isn't far behind, and may turn into a solid #3-4.
Barria, Naughton, Criswell, Tyler, Diaz...all #5-6 starters. The type of guys you want in AAA to fill-in as needed, but you don't want more than one of these guys in your rotation. Maybe one or two turns out to be a decent #4, but I think they're all really depth/fill-in types.
So as of right now, if you take the median and edge towards being a bit conservative, I'd say the Angels have: one #2 (Ohtani), one #3s (Sandoval), four #4s (Suarez, Detmers, Rodriguez, Canning), and four or five guys who could be #5s (the rest). Almost everyone of those guys could jump a spot and be in a higher category, if things go right, but also there's the chance that they fall or struggle for whatever reason. But the point being, they already have close to the starters to be competitive, and if one or two of the guys I listed as #4s can pitch like #3s, they are right there.
This doesn't mean they shouldn't try to swing a Marquez trade or go after Ray or Stroman. I think they should and will. But they've got a much stronger foundation right now than they've had in years, with lots of cheap and young in-house options.

I feel a lot better about how thy are approaching pitching. Instead of trotting out a bunch of also-rans, we are giving young guys a chance to show they can contribute, even if they are being called up very early. You bring up Warren, Wantz, Peguero, Marte, Junk, Tyler, et al to see if any of them show you something good for next year. You are building some context to work with in Spring instead of guessing for 45 days as to how their stuff would play against a ML roster. This is a live rehearsal for next year and it's totally sensible to see what you have.

I think people confuse being ready vs. the likelihood of coming to mlb and hitting the ground running at age 20-23.  Or even 24/25.  Generational players do the latter.  Most players, even really good ones take a year or two or maybe three to get their sea legs.
Detmers, Adell and Marsh are not generational players but they are likely going to be really good.  Or at least above average.  At some point, the learning curve potential in the minors flattens out and they need that next level of competition.  They'll ramp up or they won't.
Take Detmers for example.  Giving up a couple solo homers over 7 innings with 9 k's in AAA is not helping him grow.  It's only showing that he can get away with things he can't in the majors.
And that's it for all prospects.  You get away with things when you're very good.  If you don't get challenged appropriately then you stagnate.

The advocates are playing this one smart. MLB teams have a firm grip on minor league baseball and can now spend as little as they want, no consequences. The restructuring, like many things we've recently witnessed in society, is about power, control. It's not about money. Owners and organizations have money. It's about having the freedom to not fund developmental programs. Power and control.
And so by taking to social media and sharing their experience, they're effectively shaming MLB owners into making a change. With enough public outcry, these owners will be pressured into allocating more money towards minor leaguers.
I believe MLB owners and organizations should have the right, the freedom to NOT invest in minor leagues. But they should also experience the consequences for their actions, as should everyone in society. If they want to be greedy buttholes, then they should prepare to be hated by the general public.

itsKnoppUitsme reacted to ettin in The Official 2021 Los Angeles Angels Minor League Stats, Reports & Scouting Thread
Well I think that is the point about "return". Normally "return" is tied directly to "investment". Personally, I think if any Major League team took the time and money to invest in their Minor League players and then evaluate what works and does not work, they would find that making modest investments in proper housing, nutrition, life coaching, language lessons, etc., could help their investments yield better returns as a whole?
This is a multi-billion dollar enterprise and I have to think investment metrics would prove out that keeping any individual player's focus completely on baseball would help yield generally higher quality Major League assets, which could save teams a lot of money in free agency, etc.
Just a thought, I could be wrong, but I feel pretty confident that most MLB teams have not emphasized or invested properly in their Minor League systems and/or have performed the legwork to know what works and doesn't work in creating better ball players, beyond the physics-related aspects of player performance.

itsKnoppUitsme reacted to Second Base in Dylan Bundy moving back into the rotation
Might just be using Bundy to limit the innings of our valuable pitchers moving forward. I think it's pretty evident that Ohtani, Sandoval, Detmers and Rodriguez are part of the rotation moving forward.
I'm assuming Suarez too, but another part of me loved what he did in relief and wonders if that's the better fit.
But that's five pretty solid young starters that you want to protect for the future. Bringing Bundy in to provide extra rest is smart, or even keeping Quintana around to limit them to 4 innings in September. The money is already spent, clearly neither of them have value to another team or a future with the Angels, might as well use them to protect the kids.
But when it comes to Guerra or Cishek, dump those guys immediately and let some hard throwing prospects take their shot at getting big league hitters out.

I am holding on to the idea that the big move this season was to DFA Pujols.  Watching mediocre baseball partly due to Pujols' contract is the price I now willingly pay to see his sorry, selfish and insignificant ass no longer in an Angels uniform.
This is one move Minasian got right.
