A lot of players are actually fighting for their own job. No matter how the Angels finish, I believe the decision for Sosh has already been made.

The more he pitches like he did today, the higher his price tag will be. He's been consistently solid all season. I think someone will offer 5yr/$65M
We should extend him a qualifying offer. The first round pick we receive will be far more valuable than a prospect we get back in a trade.

If they don't look at Green at 3b now, it would mean that he is viewed strictly as a 2bman....

Nothing to lose at this point....we really have no upper level starting pitching prospects to speak of....same with the 2 relief pitchers signed from the Independant league...it's not like they're inhibiting anybody's developement....DiPoto (or his replacement) has lots of work to do in the offseason...

Why do you think Lindsay is such a guaranteed success?  I think the trade for Green gave them room to trade Kendrick for SP if they find the right deal.  If they can't, then Green can possibly play 3B or be traded himself.

Doubt they'll do that at this point in the season, but my guess is that they he'll be non-tendered in the off-season.

I don't understand this at all. Don Mattingly is probably going to win Manager of the Year because he did what Scioscia couldn't do: turned a talented team around mid-season into a World Series favorite. Now why would the Dodgers want Scioscia?

As much as Arte seems to always step up with his checkbook (sometimes foolishly, see Hamilton and Pujols), you have to wonder if maybe we finally have reached a saturation point....not sure we'll be taking on anything new beyond trying to re-sign Vargas ( a good idea IMO) and an upgrade or two in the pen....beyond Pujols and Hamilton, you have Blanton's dead weight of 8 million and a year left on Wells' deal, even though the Yanks are paying some....in the past, that maybe didn't seem like a lot but it looks large when you're trying to whittle down from 140 million, and still compete...
I think Kendrick or Aybar may be traded but I don't think we are taking on anything new, except maybe Vargas and a reliever or 2....

DMVol reacted to summit21 in Should the Angels trade Scioscia to the Phils?
I think some of you here underestimate just how valuable Scioscia is. He would be signed very quickly if allowed to leave. While I will admit that a trade is uncommon and unlikely, Scioscia is that rare manager that could be packaged in the right scenario. Despite some of the disdain and disgust with him from our fan base, he is highly regarded and respected within the game of baseball.

A side note on Sandberg and his long term future with the Phils, from the press conference:
"Amaro said Sandberg takes over on an interim basis and would be evaluated after the season. In his first game Friday night, the Phillies were shut out by the Dodgers, 4-0, dropping them to 53-68 overall and 5-20 since the All-Star break." Not exactly a ringing long term endorsement...

Rumor has it the Phillies would be a good fit for Scioscia, so why not just trade him? If we release him we eat all that money, which he would likely get on the open market anyway...is it the years left that is the problem in a trade? Anyone care to elababorate on why a trade would or would not work???

I disagree with the notion that the team is in trouble for the next decade. I see no reason this group of players can't turn it around offensively. We don't need Hamilton and Pujols to be what they were, we need them to be somewhere between what they have been in the past and what they showed this year. After that we need to fix the pitching. This can be done relatively quickly.

I don't see anything wrong with what Dipoto or Trumbo said.  The core is there.  But right now, they are the 2001 team.  We need them to come together and play like a team, and not individuals and become the 2002 team.  They need to step back, take a look at their mess, and decide as a team they are much better than this.  I don't see any bases loaded, no outs, "I let my team down, but the next guy had my back" attitude.

Right now, I see a lot of "we's" as in we didn't perform, but there doesn't seem to be any "I's" as in I didn't come through.

+1....and any of the Cuban defectors out there waiting for clearance....farm system is thin, FA market this winter is thin, seems to be something to consider....considering Kendrys was a good pick up, it's not like we've bombed in the international market when we've jumped in....

If this guy turns out to be a true #2 starter then it's the best and maybe only chance the halos will have of acquiring a player of that caliber perhaps for the next 2-3 years.  I hope they take a really hard look at this guy.

He's never really been an ace, he's always had #2 stuff, but this was never a problem before because of the depth of the rotation.

He's always been a good #2, but now he's more like a 3. We have two of those at the top of our rotation.

If you need a starting pitching upgrade, those 6 starts, with a quality veteran like Vargas (assuming he's healthy), might be the difference in getting you into the playoffs...But if you can't get anything much in return, hold on to him and make him a qualifying offer in the offseason...
