BigVladdy reacted to Angelsjunky in OC Register: Analysis: The Angels hoped for the best, and this is what they got
Nice and accurate summary. A few comments.
The young hitters have all been playing better of late. Schanuel is hitting .315/.354/.446 since April 17, which is about what we hoped he'd be - except for the diminished walks. That is a bit of a concern to me, as I'm not sure what's going on. On the other hand, hard to complain about the overall results, I just hope he starts walking more.
O'Hoppe is maybe the most worrisome, as if there was one thing I felt confident about the young guys, I thought he'd hit homers. They'll probably come, and catchers are known to be rather up and down in terms of offense (the 'Johnny Bench Oscillation'). I've watched almost no Angels baseball this year, but it could be that his focus has been improving on his defense.
Detmers gets the award for most disappointing. I think the hope was that he would step up and be a true #2 at least, and his first two starts looked like he was. But as I've said before, he really reminds me of Andrew Heaney: spells of dominance followed by usually longer spells of poor performance.
I'm actually cautiously optimistic about Sandoval. He's had two terrible starts, and 7 that are least decent. His FIP is almost half his ERA, so he should improve a bit (hopefully). Canning also seems to be going in the right direction - three very good starts in a row.
Tyler Anderson is clearly trade bait come July. Let's hope he can keep it up, because he might be turned into a reasonably good prospect or two.
Silseth...I think he might be one of the more overrated prospects of the last few years. I know he's got potential, but he seems a case of an Angels prospect who is over-valued by fans.

BigVladdy reacted to Second Base in When was/is the worst time to be an Angels fan?
The thing about the 80’s and 90’s was that there wasn’t an expectation of winning and so the losing wasn’t as big of a disappointment.

The last 15 years have been singularly the worst because they spent enough to win, there was an expectation of winning and they simultaneously had two of the greatest players ever in the lineup and they still lost. Every time it has been a disappointment and now we’re left with a fan base that expects the worst.
Two tragic unexpected deaths. Uniforms 20 years outdated? Stick with it. Need a new stadium? Nope. Relocate? No. Need to rebuild the farm? Never.

David Fletcher?  That’s a really bad comparison.  Fletcher was a blue collar worker who would just grind to overcome the fact that he really didn’t have the high end baseball skills. Kind of a “getter dun” somehow guy.
Thats pretty much the exact opposite of Neto, who has all the actual skills.

Are you talking about signing Snell, or resolving the stadium issue, or Arte selling the team, or the broadcast contract situation, or the health of Rendon and Trout, or Minasian’s contract, or finding out if Jo Adell is a player or a bust, or if Schanuel can drive the ball at the major league level, or if there will be shrinkflation in the dippin dots servings this year?

Why? Unless I missed something he was proven to be not guilty and it turned out he was the victim.
This team needs a little swagger on the mound that I believe will help other guys on the staff. We haven't had a bulldog on the mound since Lackey/Weaver.
He's still a very good pitcher and this team needs an ace.

Because I've been a fan for 45 years and I will remain one (tho the last several years have been difficult).
Not really a matter of fandom, just a complete lack of faith in Arte to do the right thing as far as running a winning organization is concerned. Show me one instance where Arte has seemed to give a $ hit about his image.
Can't speak to his financials but I would assume he's still making a profit which is really all that I think he cares about. I'd be thrilled to be proven wrong.
Again, I love your proposal. Incentivize winning.

BigVladdy reacted to Stradling in Billy Eppler resigned as Mets GM amid MLB investigation into improper injury list placements
I’m not going to pick this all apart but heaven forbid he sign Valbuena instead of giving the job to Fletcher. In 2017 Valbuena had a .727 OPS in the majors while Fletcher was .655 in a hitters environment at AAA.
As for drafts you missed Marsh, who was capital to acquire O’Hoppe, so if you are going to praise Minasian for getting O’Hoppe give Eppler credit for drafting the guy that made that trade possible.  He also drafted Detmers, who was the quickest to the majors and in his first full year he was an above average MLB starter.

Just as long as he never comes near the Angels again. Why some Angels fans thought this guy was a good GM will always baffle me. Was it the move to acquire Danny Espinosa to be the starting 2B one year? Signing Luis Valbuena so Sosh could play him every day over a young David Fletcher? Having a bullpen fell of DFA waiver wires like in 2019 and 2020? We had Hansel Robles and David Hernandez pitching late in games. Besides bringing Ohtani here I can't think of one good thing that happened under his tenure. 7 years after his first draft in Anaheim, the only somewhat successful major leaguers I can think of from his drafts are Griffin Canning and Matt Thaiss. If I'm missing any someone can please enlighten me but just a reminder Adell, Kyren Paris and Jordyn Adams were all high draft picks of his. Kyren Paris and Adams look like total shit.  This guy was and is a horrendous GM imo. Say what you want about Perry, he tried and failed at the deadline and that's a fair criticism. But at least I can say his draft picks like Schanuel, Sam Bachman (if he can stay healthy) and Neto look like they could have potential great careers. Plus trading for O'Hoppe he's set up some good young players in the system. I don't want this guy anywhere near Anaheim again sorry.

2023 was truly the season that broke me as a fan.

it’s like a mariners fan is playing MLB the show in franchise mode and picked the angels just to ruin them and laugh at the suffering. That’s 3 major injuries this year on a run of the mill swing. O’hoppe, Trout, and now Rengifo. All of Neto, Ohtani, and Adell all with prolonged oblique issues.

what’s the issue?? This can’t be a coincidence.

None of this is on him.  If he gets canned Arte is a bigger idiot than i thought.
He might quit, i wouldnt blame him, but there is no logical way you can put any of this one him.
his hands have been tied virtually the whole time and he still got most of what we needed done.
