ThomasSutpen reacted to Dtwncbad in Jonah Keri: The Angels have tweaked their hot stove approach as they try to build a better supporting cast around Mike Trout
Here is one way I look at the offense. . .
If they are going to roll into 2019 with Ward and Calhoun, the catcher they get needs to be a significant offensive contributor.
If they are going to get a catcher that sucks offensively, then I feel it is basically reckless to roll into 2019 with Ward and Calhoun.
I am going to have a hard time with a lineup that has Ward, Calhoun and a bad offense catcher.  That is potentially three gaping holes in the offensive lineup.
I just don't know how you can do that when it is so, so foreseeable that Ward and Calhoun might be offensive disasters.
Come July if the Angels are horrible offensively at 3B, RF and catcher, nobody in their right mind would be surprised.
    So you can't do it.
Get a catcher that can hit or make a move for 3B (or 2B with Cozart playing 3B) or RF.
Many teams have to roll the dice a bit on one position, maybe one and a halfish.
There are two big questions now at 3B and RF, and you can't pile on a glove only catcher in that situation.

I'm having some trouble understanding it too. It's not like Pujols has been some kind of hero in an Angel uniform that has produced elite numbers and helped bring us a ring. He has been an epic disappointment and now he is straight dog shit.
It's not like it's Eli Manning where he played his whole career for one team and helped bring two titles. It's not like he's been a Kobe Bryant type for us. If that was the case, then I could somewhat understand the Angels letting him do whatever the F*ck he wants. But he's an overpaid has been and is embarrassing himself. And it's embarrassing that he's playing as many games as he is on a team supposedly trying to win. I want to win games. I do not care about Albert Pujols.
Respect is fine and good and all. But this is a professional business in which teams try to put the best product on the field in order to win a World Series. It's not Facking tee ball.
I hope Pujols hangs them up soon because every year I am disliking him more and more. And the longer he continues to play 130+ games in an Angel uniform with the production we're getting from, the more of a joke the Angels organization looks like.

Yes it is a respect thing.  The Angels are showing great respect.
The ongoing question is when will Pujols RESPECT what is right for the organization and have the self RESPECT to not run his own broken-down, non-producing body out there.
Yep, this is absolutely a respect thing.
    Albert?

    Hey all, it's been a while. I hope this isn't a Craig.
I get that he is under contract. The money is already spent. But why not just waive him and his 0.5 WAR and fill his spot with a younger more versatile player?

So apparently he wants to get it to the top 5 then use financial power... i guess we have our answer on the next few years casue that aint happening anytime soon barring a Trout trade.
You dont jump from 10-12 to 5 in a couple years without losing a lot of games.

I just wanted to take a minute to say Happy Thanksgiving to our AngelsWin family. It would be neat to sign a nice little player today, like the year we signed Hunter, but either way, today will be a great day as it will be spent with the ones we love. I appreciate all of you and hope you have a wonderful day with your family and friends!

The thing I worry about with Ausmus is that he’ll be one these “veterans first” guys.  The Angels absolutely do not need that with fuc*king Pujols around.
If he’s going to try and max out Pujols AB’s that will suck.

Yeah ok um no thanks. To all of the Scioscia haters I hope you remember the grass is not always greener on the other side. A boring retread who made so many questionable decisions with the tigers and then lost his clubhouse and we’re supposed to be excited?
I was ok with someone new and young as maybe he’d relate better to players or stats or both but jeebus.
    Bring back Mike.

ThomasSutpen reacted to fan_since79 in When will the Angels announce that they are not signing Scioscia to a new contract?
I think they should do the full Connie Mack and let him manage until he's 90.
At this point, what difference does it make? We're not going anywhere for the foreseeable future. Maybe third place if pitchers' arms stay attached and guys figure out how to hit a baseball. But a new manager? Meh.

Next year they're lowering the yellow line on the RF fence so that it's level with the ground. Every ball hit off the RF wall will be a HR.

ThomasSutpen reacted to Docwaukee in ESPN: How the Angels can convince Mike Trout to stay
Angelswin thinks the Angels are that insecure boyfriend dating a girl out of their league.   Worried that if we pop the question, we'll get laughed out of the room.  But what they don't realize is that the Angels just nailed the hottest Asian ever and that they also landed the hottest latino in baseball history several years ago even though since then she's gained 40 lbs.
The point is, stop acting like Mike is looking to get out of his situation with the Angles.  My guess is that he'll be looking for reasons to stay, and there are plenty.

I get the point you're making but, that hasn't really happened in Philly with Kapler, if anything they have repeated the Angels mistakes.
When the Angels signed AP, they took a guy (Trumbo), who had played 1B for most of his career and moved him to the OF...   When the Phillies signed Santana they took Rhys Hoskins, a guy who had never played the OF in the minors and only had 200+ innings in the OF as a MLB player and made him their everyday LFer to make room for Santana.    Hoskins has been a complete and total nightmare defensive in the OF -- his dWAR stands at (-3.2), essentially negating his offense oWAR of 3.0.   They have essentially made him a non factor in order to play Santana.    In playing Hoskins in LF and Santana at 1B they got worse at two defensive positions -- they rank dead last in DRS posting a team total of (-115).   So they have been 115 runs worse than average defensively.
Santana was bad too, he didn't get his average up above .220 until early June and on the season he's only put up a 106 OPS+ better than AP sure, buy lower than anything AP put up prior to 2017.   He's still a walk machine but his power hasn't been anything special and his average which was always meh, took a turn for the worse.
The Phillies are going to be an interesting team to watch.  People are hyped up because of their record, but their record doesn't really line up with their actual performance.   Like Seattle, they are sporting a negative run differential (-13), their offense despite all the heralded prospects has been pretty awful with an OPS+ of 89.   Consider this -- the last time the Angels posted an OPS+ under 90 was 1999.   Their pitching has been above average 107 ERA+ but Nola is a big reason why.
They have payroll flexibility and a lot of young pitching coming up but they have issues on offense and defensively -- they may be a regression candidate.

Nope. Zero chance this guy walks away from that much money. It would literally be unheard of. Now maybe the Angels buy out his remaining years but I still see that as highly unlikely. Guy is going to be paid around 90 million dollars. Just from a pure intelligence standpoint I don't see any human being walking away from that kind of cash.

My understanding is the Angels are essentially trying to go easy on Canning’s arm whole building the crap out of his legs and ensuring he’s got mechanics that will keep him healthy.
I believe they’re doing the same thing with a lot of other draft picks who we hear less about. I think a lot of the 2018 draft pitchers aren’t pitching this summer.
