Anyone else think this Draft was Minasian's attempt at a long-term solution for our Bullpen troubles? While there are multiple guys that can start, I feel like there are about 6 different arms that could be in the bullpen within relatively short order -- and two that could realistically be in THIS season. Toss in a good SS, a slugger, and an upside pick at Catcher, and it feels like a pretty solid effort.

    Finally, they took a catcher.

From the scouting report sounds like a good pickup

I will say this about Minasian, perhaps the best thing he has done has been his drafting. His FO has put huge emphasis on completely restocking the Angels' farm when it comes to arms, which was something Atlanta did well years ago to set up their current team. Load up on pitching and don't be afraid to deal from that pool as it develops and have a continual source of arms to pull from.
The Angels' pitching depth should look fantastic by 2024-2025, at least on paper, if their arms keep producing like last year's draft crop has in the minors this year, even if not impacting the MLB team. It will be attractive to other teams.

Sidearm RP....   So, I guess they are in the 5K bonus to sign someone else portion of the draft.

I said this in another thread, but if the Angels have SS covered by the time he's ready, then he looks like he could be a pretty good third baseman. His arm, ability to come in on the ball and throw off balanced and on the run are all desirable traits for a third baseman. And some of the best defensive third baseman have come from other positions, Manny from SS, Chapman too, Rendon played a lot of 2B early in his career, A-Rod from SS, etc...

Trout and Ohtani have about the same value.

Trout/Ohtani means that we are going to try to be competative. Assuming we are going to take another crack at it, I want us to enter the off-season with 4 set starters, 3 set bullpen pieces, and at least 6 set position starters. I don't mean we need to have stars at every spot, but we need to have that base to have any hope of competing. Part of this will include making decisions about Walsh,  Adell, Ward, and Marsh.
Way I see it, we have:
    - 3 set starters (Ohtani-Sandoval- Detmers) with Silseth making an argument for a third.
    - 2 Set bullpen pieces (Iglasias [contract] and Hertget). Wantz seems like he could join this, with Tepera and Loup having a chance to turn it around as well. Bush and Bachman could be included here next year as well.
    - 5 Set Starters (Trout/Ohtani/Ward/Redon [contract] and yes, I'm including Rengifo) with Walsh, Marsh, Stefanic, Stassi, Adell trying to turn things around to make this list.
With this list, it seems pretty clear that we are going to have to add, at minimum, two decent free-agent position players, a mid-rotation starter, and also take another 2 or 3 spins on the bullpen roulette.
All of this to say -- I could actually see us being "buyers" on the low end of the market, trying to get more solid contributers for next years team. -think Miguel Andujar, David Peralta, or Brandon Drury.

I would trade Taylor Ward in a heartbeat.  This is his high water mark for value.  His versatility and bat would be of high interest to a team in the hunt.
I personally don’t expect Ward to be a high impact player in future seasons so I am perfectly content to cash in on the spike in value today.

Imagine if they just were healthy, had a shortstop that could hit and one additional truly premium starter.

I think I'll just watch the games and find something better to do when the bullpen gives up 8 runs instead of rerunning the Trout is going to leave us crapfest.

Guys this is easy. We just need to trade for Jose Ramirez, Xander Bogaerts, Jazz Chisolm, and Bryan Reynolds (as a reclamation project, of course). I think if we get all these guys, it will be a real achievement when our bullpen blows it.

Fletcher or others like him should help. Especially if they have speed. Good eye, hits the ball to all fields, doesn't swing for the fences.
But then again, the team rarely scores other than with homers. It's a coaching philosophy issue as well.
Shortstop hasn't been the same since Simmons left. They need someone like him again. A lot of great shortstops around the league.

I think it's just the human impact on the game. Sure, he's hard working and intelligent. So was I at age 23, and I still did all kinds of idiot things. So I understand if Adell is angry and resentful and has even lost faith in the organization or focus in general. His best friend is up and he's not. The GM that drafted him is gone too. So is the coach he thought he'd be playing for. Upton put in time mentoring him and he's gone too.
Baseball is a business and for Adell, I think it's easy to resent the Angels right now. Even when guys are hurt and they're losing, they still won't give him an everyday look.
It has to be frustrating. Baseball is not only a game that requires talent, it also requires the right timing. Right place, right time. I've known plenty of guys that should've been drafted but were never seen. I've seen some pretty good players in the minor leagues not get promoted and find a non baseball career path. I mean just look at Jeff Trout. He hit .321 in AA then got sick of the minor league life, moved back home and started a family, thankfully. Similarly, situationally the timing just hasn't aligned for Adell.
I'm with AJ. Adell needs to be up and needs to be inserted into the lineup continually both for his sake, the Angels sake and the guys that he's providing rest for. And at three same time, I recognize Jo Adell could've done a lot more in AAA to convince them. But look at his first couple weeks in AAA, it was comical how good he was.

I mean, it isn't like Marsh's performance is a high bar to surpass. To echo Scotty, if Adell was playing well enough, they'd go back to a platoon, and find ways to get him into more games. And consider how many games Trout and Ward have missed - that's a lot of time that Adell could have gotten.
So let's say we have the "problem" we thought we'd have this year: Adell and Marsh are both ready, Ward is still really good, plus Trout. Now let's incorporate DH and 1B, so add Ohtani and Walsh to the mix. That's six players, five positions.
5 positions x 162 starts = 810 starts. Divide that by 6 and you get an average of 135 starts. Now consider injuries - some guys will play less than that. And then consider pinch-hitting, pinch-running, late game replacements for defense or on account of blow-outs, etc - at least every third game - and you're talking 850-900 games played for those six players, or an average somewhere in the 140-150 range.
Even if somehow, miraculously, everyone is healthy all year, you can still manage it so that Trout and Ohtani get into 150+ games, Walsh and Ward into 145+, and Marsh and Adell into 130+.  But again, injuries will happen, and all six could play in 90-95% of the games they're healthy for.
Or to put it another way, having six good players for five positions means you've always got a good player on the bench.
Now personally, I think the Angels should be doing that now. I'd rather see Adell work out in the big leagues than Wade or Lagares starts in the OF. I mean, so far, in terms of OF starts, we've had:
Trout 54, Marsh 53, Ward 39, Adell 21, Lagares 15, Wade 7, Rojas 6, Mayfield 6, Whitefield 2, Thomas 1. That's 37 starts that went to bench players and scrubs.
That also implies that the Angels must really feel like Adell needs to be in AAA. It is too bad, because he looked a bit better last time up, hitting .368/.429/.474 in 6 games.
