Yeah, why would you want to do things like the *checks notes* defending WS champs and a team that's won the division for 5 straight years. Sucks they hired Maddon in the first place but at least it's over

I'd like to kick the 6 man rotation to the curb and put Ohtani in a 5 man rotation. He is a big boy now and should showcase his talent for 32 games instead of 26. He can get his rest the day after pitching by letting someone else DH. I believe this would create the best path to winning more games.

This is the exact thing that worries me.
Any owner coming in would understand it's a "win-now" window with Trout's health/prime at risk.
If Arte waits too long into November/December to sell then this team would need yet another gap year to fully asses the team.
It's nice that Arte is leaving, but he might screw this team one more time by his timing.

For all you Nevin supporters, do you just ignore the defense and fundamentals of this team?
That 9th inning was a disaster defensively and the lack of execution on basic fundamentals seems like a coaching issue.

I am sure Patrick O'Neal is a good human being, but he does not belong in the play-by-play booth based on what I have heard from him this season. What invariably happens a lot is that Gubicza says something and O'Neal simply repeats it or regurgitates it in a slightly different way. He doesn't bring a lot of original commentary and that is because he is inexperienced in play-by-play and total baseball experience.
Mark was a player and his ability to dissect the game, particularly on the pitching side, allows him to add value in this role. Matty V can add to the broadcast too but if he isn't in a full time role, I don't want him in the booth, either. We had a decent thing going with Rojas and Gubicza, so if we can find the right partner for Mark that can interact with him, not dissimilar to Victor, and make good calls and commentary, bring them aboard.
This play-by-play situation needs to be solved and I don't think O'Neal and Matty V are the solutions.

I think they need to add a starting SS, 1B, and OF along with a backup C.

They need a SS who is good on both sides of the ball.
The biggest need may be to add more SLG%. The easiest way to do that is to upgrade 1B and an OF spot.
They can't count on Walsh bouncing back, IMO. If he does, great, and you can use him at 1B/LF/RF. Likewise, they can't count on Adell/Duggar/Moniak in a starting OF role.
I'm fine with a generic backup C, but the ideal target would be one who crushes LHP since Stassi has reverse splits and does well against RHP.

Yeah. The offensive depth has been the problem this season, not the pitching.
The stats back it up, and it'll be plainly obvious who does/doesn't watch the Angels in the offseason when some insiders/reporters/analysts inevitably claim the Angels problem is pitching.
I think a number of Angels fans saw this issue coming during the offseason, which was why many wanted to see the Angels get a SS.

Frieri Meatball reacted to Docwaukee in Go all in - gut the farm and pay Ohtani.
Ok, so hear me out because this might sound a little crazy at first.  Let me preface this that it kinda goes against every bone in my body.  I love the idea of building the team through the farm and creating a sustainable model of success for years and years.   Like what we used to do.
But we've got to break the cycle somehow.  Because no matter what's been done, the timing is off and they end up missing players or ignoring deficiencies in key areas.  We've been going through this half-assed rebuild/try to compete circle jerk for the last 5-6 years at least.
And then we end up with some sort of combo of generational players plus guys who still need to cut their teeth but have potential, to guys we pick up off waivers that we draw a moustache in hopes that we can get them to be someone they've never been.
Many have proposed a traditional rebuild, but those suck.   They take 5 years.  Or longer.  Trade Ohtani for a bunch of guys 'close to the majors'.  And that's part of the problem.  We keep needing certain guys to be better than they're ready to be.  We needed Ward and Sandoval and others to be as good as they are now...but like two years ago.  Now we're going to jack around with Adell, Rengifo, Silseth, Davidson, Suarez etc.  And then we're gonna wait for Neto and Bachman and Ohoppe to contribute?  When?  2-3 years from now?
We have about 100 guys in this org right now with actual present or future value.  And they're on like 25 different clocks.  Align the talent cycles (yes, I'm waiting for everyone's awesome jokes on this).
So I have no real idea how to do it, but I'll make something up.
Trout, Ohtani, Rendon aren't going anywhere.  I would give Shohei a monster deal for 24/25 with an opt out after.  I think it's the only way you might keep him for now.
I'm for sure keeping Sandoval and Detmers.  And Taylor Ward unless someone gives me an oddly high return that I could then flip for a better player.  But he's pretty good.
I'm also keeping Stassi.  Premium catchers don't typically come available.  Upgrade would be tough and cost a shit ton.  But for the love of everything decent and holy, spend the damn money on a quality backup.  If I hear Suzuki's name in reference to this team at any point for next year?  Then I'll already know we've failed.
Walsh is actually an easy one for me.  Keep him unless another team thinks more highly of him than I do.  But if I see guys like Matt Duffy, Jose Rojas or David MacKinnon (yes, I know he's an A which is why I stated 'like') anywhere near the field as his backup?  Again, that would mean we've failed.
I can probably live with Fletch at a super ut.  If he get's more than 300 PA then Minasian didn't do his job.
Rengifo is my coin flip.  I'm inclined to hand him the 2b job.  But, he could end up very useful and we have to trust him to be as good as he is now.
Everything else I am doing is to get as much talent on this team as possible for the next 2-3 years (after this year) without making monster financial commitments.  Which means...
likely gutting the farm to make this happen.
We'll need a SS, very good corner OFer, IF and OF depth including a very good contingency plan for 1b.  Plus one top of the rotation starter with 2+ years of control and several pen pieces.
If Arte wants to increase payroll some then great.  But I would absolutely NOT bring in anyone on more than a 4 year contract and even that's pushing it.  So I'm getting guys like Judge and Trea Turner out of my head.
So give it two years.  Maybe 3 if you can pull it off.  And if it doesn't work after the first two, we can trade Ohtani (who won't have as much value because he'll cost a lot and have opt outs) and then at that point, you can also trade away anything of value that you've acquired for that window.
But we really need to stop mixing and matching and praying because it's not working.  If recycling the same old method is the route they choose instead then so be it.
In some ways, Minasian may have already started prepping for this by the moves he made at the deadline.  I didn't really like it at the time but perhaps it's gonna be more helpful than I realized.

    Let me get this straight...
The guy cannot hit major league pitching. He watches or whiffs through strikes, then when he's down in the count he swings at balls. He's up there guessing and he looks like a fool.
He also struggles catching fly balls and biffs ground balls routinely, he just gave up an inside the park homer on a dribbler down the line...so his glove sucks too, he can't be depended on as a fielder.
And still, after all this...you're thinking playing him at first base would fix all this? Have you even watched him play? Are you out of your mind?
I'd like to ask for anyone who thinks more "playing time" is going to make him better: When do you give it up?  When are you going to get back to reality and decide he has gotten enough playing time? How many more games?
He's played over 100 games and not ONE thing about him has improved. You have to draw a line in the sand at some point.
You can't expect us to be a competitive team and get good players who want to play in this organization if Mr. "he's still working it out after 100 games" is still getting playing time. It's irrationale. It's not how good organization are ran. At some point the guy has to go. We can't keep doing this to our team.

I think it was reaching a point where Marsh was either going to go down to AAA or they needed to find a trade because of 4 OF needing to play. Not just right now, but going forward. They clearly still believe in Taylor Ward, although he’s been really bad and like Walsh seems to have no confidence. So that other spot ideally goes to Adell or Marsh. They found someone who still likes Marsh for his defense and upside, and willing to part with a blocked prospect.
Now, I say it seems they “chose” Adell but they continue to pull him out of games and not start him. Have no idea why if you just traded Marsh. Give Adell 40 games in a row to see if he can make progress. They’re doing really stupid stuff (late defensive subs, platooning outfielders) like they’re in a race and need to win. They should be assessing guys that have a future with the team. Sierra, Velazquez, Suzuki, or Rojas should not be playing at all. They have no role in 2023. I hate it when they do this stuff.

Frieri Meatball reacted to Docwaukee in OC Register: Alexander: Arte Moreno is definitely not the people’s choice
I can't help but want to math the crap out of this.
So let's say he's Gerrit Cole in terms of talent but because of various restrictions, Ohtani is essentially 2/3rds of that.  Cole makes 36m per.  So lets say Ohtani's straight up pitching value is 24m.
Now his offense.  He's probably about a 3 WAR DH.  But there's some criss cross apple sauce in terms of that value.  Brandon Marsh is probably a 3 WAR CFer with his paltry offense.  Trout is probably a 5 WAR DH.
So here's the math I'm thinking of.  Is Adell plus Ward plus Trout plus Marsh.  Plus some bench guy we might not have yet.  How much more valuable is Ohtani plus Trout plus Ward plus Marsh plus Adell?  Some it this is future projections.  Some of this is injury related.  Some of it depends on that fifth guy.
While Shohei is super exciting on offense, he's much more replaceable than people want to acknowledge.
So what is his replacement value as a DH?  It's really not that much to be honest.  Maybe 10m max?
Now the not so obvious math part.  What is Shohei's draw?  There is speculation that it's about 10m.  I would probably argue that it's more than that.  But what the hell do I know?
So.  Can you replace a 24m pitcher.  A 10m DH and a 15m cash cow?  So he's worth probably 50m.  And someone is about to pay him probably 45m.  Probably for longer than he's worth that 45m per year.  So at some point you're paying him 45m and he's not worth 50m anymore.
Now.  What is your ROI if you trade him?  First of all, I don't think you miss his offense that much if you can acquire two really good position players and open up the DH spot to guys like Trout and others.
So as some have mentioned, it boils down to his value as a pitcher.  You'd have to get it right if you, let's say, get two top notch pitching prospects.  One of the has to be an ace.
And the final thing is, can you get another team to pay extra for the novelty?  If you can get extra return because of that then you do it.  This is where the rubber meets the road imo.  I love Shohei and he's the reason I tune in on most days.  But I would watch more if the team was winning regardless of whether they had a unicorn.  Find a way to turn the unicorn into value because he's a unicorn.  Do the math to help the team win.  Not to make them a bit more watchable.
Here's how I feel right now.  I'll watch some Shohei highlights.  I'll watch some Mike Trout highlights.  I might tune into a game if Shohei is pitching.  But if they were 7 games over .500 and in a WC spot, I would probably watch every game.  And it wouldn't matter whether they had Ohtani.
Bottom line.  Win and I'll care more.  Suck with Gosselin and Velazquez and Wade and a bunch of other crap?  You've totally lost me.  I'll pay half attention to the unicorn but frankly, If you lose 60% of the time I'm just not gonna care that much.
