It's funny that even without a big name DiPoto may have had his best off season as a GM.

Seriously guys, this isnt a kumbaya message or anything but damn... every player has a nasty nickname, they all suck, we blow, owner sucks, GM sucks... we're a giant sinkhole of suck according to most of you.  i cant figure out if we suck or blow or both.. if that's physically possible.

Its spring training, we have a team with a ton of potential coming off a bad year, shit happens ..  I've never seen anything like this... even the Astros board probably has a better attitude than we do... if there is one.. do they have fans i dont know but i digress...  can we put away the negativity until we actually see them play a couple of games.. maybe?  please?

Honestly this place has become unbearable at times.

Albert Pujols... HamilTON, Blowton.. ok maybe that ones deserved but still.. sheesh.

i still say Blanton is one of the craziest things ive seen in a long time
Look at his game logs.. he had some really very good starts.. for a months or so he was downright rock solid mid season sandwiched around a terribad beginning and ending.
Similar to Santana the year before when it was total hot/cold.
I think he will do much better this year... i mean lets be honest he cant do any worse but still... he was so far off his career norms, like most everyone else last year... it has to balance out, right?

He is suddenly the best on the open market but it isnt really an open market.  Everything i see says he wants to be close to home.

He might not want more than a 1 year deal, but i doubt it comes cheap.

All that having been said im betting Washington as someone else said, or maybe back to NY.

My hope, NY gets him making Nova expendable for a Kendrick deal

i never said i wasnt frustrated, damned right i am, perhaps moreso than ever as this team should be a damn lot better than it is.  I remember the real lean days when going 500 was something to cheer about for about a decade.  being able to drive up on a whim and get good seats... before the bandwagon hit.

Last season to me was one of the most frustrating ive ever had as a fan.  The team had every possible bad thing happen that could have, lost its heart and got to the point that it was very clear even they didnt care and were just playing it out.. i stopped watching about 2/3 of the way thru as i couldnt stomach it anymore.  I've never done that before in over 35 years as a fan of this team.

That having been said the question stands, why bother just to suck less?  Why spend any money at all or make any trades if we are going nowhere anyway?  fans?  they see thru that shit, signing Arroyo just to say we tried is like pulling out late and saying you tried.. its pointless.

For me this team can make the playoffs... we are about one real piece away form contention in my mind.. a legit starter.  Does that make us a favorite, no, but it puts us in the mix.  It doesn't matter if I pitch unless the offensive guys play like they should but on paper a legit 3 puts us in the mix.. you call me a superfan but i would call you negative Nancy if you think otherwise and making any moves would be little more than mental masturbation of were a third place team either way

Rosenthal isnt defending him, hes defending his right to the opinion... bit different.
Still, i find it laughable how the media and baseball want to throw these guys under the bus after all those years turning the blind eye and being duplicitous in the whole of it.

This is the thesis statement on where SABR and the pure stats guys fail.
Morris was a stud, plain and simple.. guy had more complete games than a lot of guys had wins, lol
As said he just won.. didnt care about the score.. didnt care about his own shit.. just wanted to pitch 9 and get the win... nothing else mattered.
The statheads of the world have to stop watching box scores more than the games... they are the one killing it and creating all these selfish asshat players that care more for thier stats than anything else... they have to, or it costs them money and such... its a joke as far as im concerned.
Stats have their place.. i too am a stats guy, but there is more to the game than pure stats, period.

true.. but dont thee decisions have to have some logic to them?  again im not defending ARod.. im bashing baseball and ownership for trying to have the cake and eat it to.  the actions against ARod are correct, but the benefits to the Yankees are out of line.
Baseball is covering its own ass over the entirety of the roid issue... there is no way you or them could ever convince me that they were not fully aware of what was going on.  if they were then they were incompetent as any businessman would know these things about those around him, especially the high profile ones they are putting up as the face of the franchise

Baseball and the writers have planted a flag on he morale high ground and thrown the players under the bus rather than accepting even partial responsibility... so again either they were duplicitous or they were incompetent.. either way it say little about them.

Yes, that is my opinion... No, i dont know it to be fact... but i know employers keep an eye oin such things in the real world.. baseball teams invest millions in these players, do they truly think we are fool enough to believe they knew nothing?

...and now.. they get to benefit from it all over again.  where is the logic in this?  if this makes any sense the the only word i can think of is naive

Why does every post you make start with sarcasm and insults...

In any event the by product is significant in this case.. moreso than the crime in my opinion.  I'm sure that means nothing to you but im still entitled to it so, whatever.

What i do not and will not understand is the relief to the team.  They benefited from his actions... i do not believe they were ignorant of them, and not they get everything they could possibly want from its outcome.

The implication here is that the teams have no reason whatever to even try to stop the problem...   they get all the benefits of the players performance when they break the rules, and get to throw them away when they get caught and benefit twice

floplag got a reaction from arch stanton in Pure stats versus Observation... and the damage to the game
Based on much of the conversation of late regarding Morris and others.. and some comments ive read about the writers.. something occurred to me that i wonder what some of you might consider...

So, a lot of people are talking about the new stats... the new standards... and replacing the older writers with the newer more stats knowledgeable ones... and i use that term loosely.

I wonder if you consider a guy like Morris... a guy that was more worried about doing the job... saving the bullpen... pitching 9 innings win or lose... versus the so-called specialist of today, and these guys that want to get out of a game after 5 innings if they have kept it to a so-called quality start, which guys like Morris would have laughed at.

So what we end up with is a bunch of guys more worried about their stats for their next contract... or consideration for the hall etc... than guys that go out there and get it done.  To me it has damaged the game with all the so-called specialization, and placing the sole measuring stick on the box score... than actually watching the player.

Think about it, do you think for one minute half these guys voting have even seen an Angel game in the last 5 years?  oh sure maybe if they were playing the Yankees or something but aside from coincidence you think any of the so-called national writers watching anything more than highlight reels?  and reads the box score?

Is that the game you guys want to watch?  is that truly how we are to measure these players?

Don't get me wrong I'm not against stats and use them myself, but i also try to temper it with actually making an effort to research, watch, and read more than a box score.

Here is a stat to think about... Morris had 175 COMPLETE Games in his career...  from 1980 to 1991 he had 10 or more CG every year but once, 9 in '84.  The league leader last year had 5... only 2 guys have had 10 or more since 2000.

The de-evaluation of Jack Morris to me is the thesis of what has changed in the game in the last couple of decades and i cant say i like where its going.  Starting pitchers are to the point where if they go 5 and dont give up 5 runs they get applauded... to Morris that would have been a disgrace.  Grit and the so-called intangibles have become a punch line... but we an Angel fans know we dont win a title without them.

We are on our way to nothing but specialization players in the game... and i tell you what when it gets to that point is the day i stop watching the game.
