Chuck, with what is left we aren't looking to bolster the staff, but rather solidify it.

Scott, Jimenez and Santana would bolster the staff, but it would cost a pick.

Some here believe Arroyo would bolster the staff in that it gives us at least a righthander version of Jason Vargas, which is not that bad considering we have Santiago, Skaggs, Richards, Mulder and Shoemaker for the remaining 2 spots.

I believe that Arroyo would help solidify the staff and I obviously love "good" Ervin and "good" Ublado, but I don't think this team is doing to sing a pitcher that costs us a pick. I do have an interesting idea though. If you are going to sign a Ubaldo, then why don't you also sign Drew, then trade Aybar to get as much minor league talent as possible. That would basically take the place of the draft pick.

Yes, but you're assuming Aybar can bring us a good pitcher in return. If he can great, I'm for it.

No, read my post again. I am asking him to bring us as much minor league talent as possible, to replace what we would lose by losing out on the pick.

the problem i see from the realistic names on that list is that none of them are a true #3 at this point.
Some of them might be, or could be.. but could also be more like 4 or 5s.
Are any of those guys you would really want to give the ball to in a playoff game?  To me thats kinda the measuring stick when i think about a 3

Niese sucks, plain and simple. You can sign Maholm, who'd cost less on a one year deal, and still keep Aybar. There's not much difference between Maholm and Niese, if anything Maholm is the better pitcher

At worst he is #4 signed to a team friendly contract for the next 4years. If Richards keep progressing and Skaggs produces we are in great shape.

IMO, He'd be worse than a #4. He has a career ERA+ of 95, while pitching in one of the biggest parks and in the NL.

Fair enough. What do you think we could get for Aybar?

Lol.

He has a point, though. It's slim pickings this year, and most of these guys are barely #3 pitchers.
