Maybe because they are aware that ....

...His career neutral park ERA is 4.25

    ...His career ERA+ is 96

...His career inter-league ERA is 4.78

...His career neutral park OPS allowed is .787.

...His career inter-league OPS allowed is .881

...They might even suspect his arm is toast...

Mostly they probably realize that if the Angels were to take on all of Niese's contract while paying 70% of Hamilton's they would end up paying 99 mil instead of 89 mil.....

People seem to be looking at his raw ERA and ignoring the current state of offense.  He's nothing more than a league average to slightly below career average pitcher in the NL.   Jon Niese gets massively overrated by people.

    This line ...  again....

Jerry Dipoto uses stats -- as such he is impervious to dunderheaded thinking..   He never traded for Tommy Hanson,, he never signed Joe Blanton, he never signed Jason Isringhausen, he never signed Latroy Hawkins and sabr principles had nothing to do with any of those moves.   None of those moves were a direct result of his decision making and even if they were it was MS fault for playing them because Jerry would have been too smart to play any of the guys he signed.

Also, Billy Beane, crown prince of statistical analysis has NEVER tried to tell a manager who to play because he is too smart to do that and its not in his job description.

Nope....   No way on Earth this can be true.   Mike Scioscia will not be denied, he sits in his office with his Beats by Dre headphones blasting every version of Frank Sinatra's "My Way" and does whatever the hell he wants..  Why?  Because that seems totally logical and it's the only conclusion any sabr savvy person could ever come to.

You sports beat guys with access to the clubhouse and players and a feel for what's going can be so silly.  Perhaps you should pick up a copy of Bill James Historical Abstract and learn something.  Geesh.

As much as I'd hate it, I'd love to see Arte move the team to downtown LA just to see the meltdown on this board.

Josh Hamilton was 0-6 with RISP...his RBI came in a runner at 3B, 1 out, in the 8th inning of game 3.  His clutch AB tightened the game up to 8-3.

He shouldn't even have been on the ALDS roster

The Angels have already told Skaggs that even if he's ahead of schedule, he's not pitching in 2015. They're going to be cautious with him. They could change their mind, but I doubt it.

Ibanez wasn't signed to be a bench player... he was signed to be the everyday DH.  Anyone trying to argue otherwise is guilty of revisionist history.

I do think Ernie got more rope than he merited but at the same time Frieri's fall from grace was spectacular in a very ugly way.   I've always been on Dipoto for failing to address the pen but I don't think anyone could have predicted Frieri falling apart the way he did.  In a weird way his complete and total implosion may have been the best thing that happened to the team.  Had he merely been mediocre they may not have gone on an all out mission to fix the pen.

I think everyone involved with the decision process gave too much credence to Ibanez's recent history of slow starts and possibly his history of having hit well in Anaheim.

The run differential in the series was 15-6, in what universe do you consider that lucky?  Or unexplainable as you put it.  You could make the same excuses in every sport.  What if the Giants never got that circus Tyree catch in the super bowl vs the Patriots?  The Lakers beat the Celtics by 4 points in game 7, what if the Celtics get a couple more bounces their way?  What if Robert Horry never gets the tip out for the game winning shot against the Kings?  Having the ball roll your way is just a part of sports.  But the better team will still find a way to win, without making excuses about it.  Ive heard Scioscia say it all the time in postgame conferences, that "we shouldnt have been in that position to begin with."
The same would apply for Games 1 and 2 against the Royals.  Yeah the Royals made some nice catches, but we should not have been in that position to rely on them dropping the ball in order for us to win.  If we truly were the better team, we would have proved it by not going 2-26 with RISP, while the Royals went something like 6-10 or whatever it was.  Why couldnt we get the walk off hit or homer in at least one of those games?  Instead, the Moustakas and Hosmer got them.  The reason this happened, our pen wasnt deep enough to compete with theirs.  And the Royals approach this series was infinitely better than ours.

But we only needed 100 more tries to prove we were the better team right?  Maybe MLB can expand these games to 100 game series for the Angels.

AngelsAndRamsFan reacted to Jeff Fletcher in Orange County Register: Dipoto's take on Trout's declining SBs
Trout also weighs about 30 more pounds than Griffey in his playing days. And he did steal 16. He may steal 25 next year. Just don't look for 30-40.

And my point, and Dipoto's, is that stealing bases is not easy. It's about more than speed. It beats you up. And that's why the other guys who have possesed that combination almost always end up stealing fewer bases, because it beats you up and potential prevents you from being able to produce where it counts a lot more, in the batter's box.

Dipoto's other point, which I hadn't thought of myself, is that stealing bases is even harder on Trout's body than on a guy like Jarrod Dyson because Trout is a big dude. That's a lot of weight to go flying into bases (including all the times diving back into first, by the way).

I'm saying the Royals beat the A's in extra innings like they did the Angels, twice. You are not the best team if beaten in a sweep in the post season. The Angels had too many holes that over the season cam be hidden but are horribly exposed in the post season.
A two man rotation wasn't getting them to the world series and their offense that the core had faltered down the stretch wasn't good enough.
