Got to catch the Angels workout at Tempe Diablo stadium yesterday. We walked up just as Mike Trout and the other outfielders were starting long toss. Trout was standing about 20 feet away from us and my 5 year old (who has a baseball knowledge limited to Mike Trout, "Go Angels" and me telling him to stop playing in the dirt at T-Ball games) says loudly "where's Mike Trout?" Mike turns around and waves to him. Then he runs over after warming up and gives my son the ball he was using. He also later signed the ball too. Quality guy. Friendly and down to earth. The Angels and us fans are extremely lucky.

i don't have an enjoyable relationship with my dad. he turns 89 in a couple of months, and he's getting closer to passing. when his time comes, it'll be hard on me that i don't have a ton of great stories of the two of us and the things we did. i envy those of you who have great relationships with your dad and all the great things the two of you have done. i'm trying to have that kind of relationship with my daughter.

This is just silly.  You are acting like there could never be anything better for the kid than to sit in a classroom for eight hours and getting maybe 10 minutes of personal instruction during those 8 hours. 
 
I would give up a month of that for one week in a different culture actual learning stuff.  Or a week in DC going to the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian or going to the Badlands and seeing fossils.  Sure the best time to do those things are in the summer but sometimes that time doesn't work for the people who actually have to pay for the kids to be able to go to those places. 
 
We aren't talking about kids just skipping school and hanging out at the rec center.

honestly, whatever. i think most of us were already in a 'whatever we get from Hamilton will be gravy' mode of thinking even before this news.

If both you and your employer put away $5k a year and you work there for 30 years of you get a decent annual return of 6.5% you'll have close to $1 million in your 401k. That doesn't account for raises where you might be able to increase your contributions. Also I don't know how pensions work but my guess is if you die your spouse and family get nothing versus a 401k where they get your money.

These people might as well start rioting now. It's not like the verdict makes any difference.

OK, this has been bothering me for a bit now. Whenever the Angels lose there's the predictable refrain of, "They look they aren't trying out there, like they don't care." Not only the team as a whole but individual players (especially Hamilton).
 
I just don't get this. Of course they are trying, of course they care. I imagine that Josh Hamilton cares a lot more than people realize, and that his poor performance is eating him up. Not performing well does not automatically mean they aren't trying or don't care. To me this feels like an excuse, something to the effect of "They're not doing well so obviously not trying, because if they cared they'd win." That's just wrong on so many levels.
 
Trying and caring is not the same as having heart, moxie, mojo, chutzpah, that special spark - all of which comes about when your effort and talent merge in such a way that is almost magical. In other words, its when you're able to break through the struggle and find a way to win again. The Angels weren't able to do that, but it doesn't mean they didn't care or weren't trying. I mean, sure, maybe they could have cared more, or maybe this or that player could have run a tad harder to first. But I'm not sure it would have made a difference. In other words, they didn't lose because of a lack of effort or care.
 
I think the most we could say is that maybe the Angels were too complacent, they didn't take the Royals seriously enough, and thought they could roll right through them. But even that I doubt. Maybe the first game, but not the second and third.
 
I get it. People are looking for excuses and/or angry and want to blame someone. But let's be clear: the Angels tried and they certainly do care. They just didn't have that special something that makes a champion.

Percy!  We're all pulling for you.  Your cancer is my Red Sux (I guess it's probably your Red Sux too.)  I hate it.  The Red Sux are having a deservedly bad year.  I'm hoping cancer performs the same as the Red Sux for the rest of the season...so far, cancer has choked and you're keeping your arm.  Maybe the cells it needed were in the clubhouse eating chicken.
 
So, keep your spirits up as best you can and jump in here any time you need some comic relief or whatever the F kinda distraction this site is good for.
