He's 13-20 on the road, so he's not exactly Cy Young there, either.  He's just not a winner, period.

I apologize.  Every game I have turned on this year has been at least a five run loss.  Literally took them 30 minutes to give up 7 runs from the second I flipped it on.

Sandoval's career record at home is
    6 - 23
    not including tonight.

Trade him to Texas, Houston, Seattle or Sacramento.

This honestly should not even be a question.
Were not competitive, were not going to be within the next few years.. trade anyone and anything you can and build for that future.
It should have been done long ago.

I still watch about the same amount, it’s just the frustration level and amount of fun I’m having that has changed. I still enjoy Angels baseball, but it’s a different feeling now than it was in the “golden era”. There was frustration then too, but it was more about player execution and on field decisions than organizational suckage.

And as bad as the pitching has been overall, if you look up and down the FIP it seems bad defense/luck have stung them quite a bit too. All of the SP have a FPI under 5.00 now (Canning is right there at 4.99) and of all the active relievers, the only ones standing out as really poor are Moore (5.97) and Suarez (4.73). The rest are sub-4.00 or sub-3.00 even (Strickland, Garcia).
It seems like they are starting to stabilize a little bit and while I don't think this is a good team, it is starting to look more like a league average team and all things considered, that's a pretty great outcome and bodes well for 2025.

    Also worth noting...

Taylor Ward's Baseball Savant is all kinds of red...

And while Luis Rengifo's is not, he's still hitting a very pleasant .312/.364/.450/.814 while emerging as a pretty solid SB threat (12 for 14).

It'll be nice when Sano and hopefully an improved Drury return.

And for crying out loud, send his entire remaining salary as part of any trade, if still pitching well into late July, as only $17 million will remain through 2025.
Halos are already waaay under the tax threshold.

I guess the way I'd look at it if I'm the GM is that he's making a little over $5M this year, will probably go to, what, $8M or so next year, and then $10-12M (maybe more) in 2026 through arbitration. If I'm realistic, I know it's highly unlikely the team will be competitive next year.
So even if I believe there's a path to contention in 2026, I don't know that I'd want to pay Sandoval ~$20M for two years of what will probably be mediocre results on a team that might be in contention one of those years. I'd personally trade him in a heartbeat if I could get back a guy/guys with more years of control.

I think it was Eno Sarris who had an article recently about guys who are underperforming their Statcast data. Sandoval was on there. I don't think it his stuff or his metrics that are the issue, it's the mental side of pitching that he is lacking. Somebody might unlock his full potential, doesn't seem like its going to be the Angels though.

halodground reacted to jsnpritchett in What’s the smart thing to do with Anderson?
I still don't understand the thinking on this, especially with Canning. He's only controlled through next year and he's never been healthy or consistent enough for me to think it's ever going to fully click into place for him.
His StatCast numbers aren't great, either--though they do show the effectiveness of his off-speed stuff.

On Sandoval, I'd ship him out immediately if possible, even though he's controlled through 2026. He's about to start getting relatively expensive for what he produces and he's just not a consistent winner. Get what you can for him that'll be useful when the team starts getting better.

I don't think there is a single player in the organization that I would say is completely unavailable. Granted it would take a nearly perfect offer to get Dana, O'Hoppe, Neto, Soriano, etc., but I'd move those guys in a heartbeat if it was a clear upgrade for the Angels and there were controllable years. None of them have the track record or upside to convince me they are untouchable.

it's an absolute catch-22 with these guys. you have to have players you can build around as the core for the future, but yet, you're not going to get anyone worthwhile if you trade them and don't get fair value. and if you can get fair value, why trade them to begin with?
nobody is going to trade for tucker, guillorme, rendon, and about a dozen other guys.
this is a tough situation for any GM to be in, so perry had better move with caution and a solid plan to upgrade. i question whether or not perry can pull off any good moves here, and whether or not arte will let him.

I don’t totally agree with promoting Dana, but I’m also becoming more open to the idea that this is going to become the norm in baseball the next decade. We’re going to see owners/FO increasingly rush players and lock up to Braves-esque deals, and less contracts for vets and mega-deals. We’re already seeing it happen. I think it feels like rushing for anyone who has followed the game for a few years or more, but I think we’re seeing the MLB becoming NBA-ized. Minors being consolidated. Drafted players almost immediately fast-tracked to starting lineups.
That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Dana is up after the deadline.

The goal should be to get the best return. Let’s hope that Arte allows Perry to go that route. I’d absolutely pay some of his salary for a quality return.

I said it in another thread, I've flat out been told at least three teams are tracking/scouting Canning. There are a lot of ppl out there that believe he could be a lot better than his career numbers and while that may be true, the years of control aren't there anymore.  If you can cash on on what others view his upside is -- you have to do it.

Trade him first solid offer. He’s pitched well enough so far you may be able to wait until deadline but if you get something offered ahead of that that feels like a good get, pull the trigger. Put Daniel or Rosenberg in and see if they prove anything over 12+ starts.

That is a good point.   The trade really benefits them for 2025 and beyond any way.

Kenny Rosenberg. Hell, even Dana.  I don't think it really matters who replaces them, tbh. If you trade all of them, you're clearly rebuilding, so you just need warm bodies to finish out this season.
