Not in any public school in the United States.

 

Even paras have to go through background checks with law enforcement.  

 

Gym teachers who are under FTE contracts are required to have an actual teaching certificate for their content area, just like any other teacher.  

 

Extracurricular coaches aren't always teachers, and it's up to individual districts as to whether or not they do background checks on non-teachers who hold those contracts.  Ours does them.  

 

Maybe I'm thinking of assistants or extra-curricular events.

 

I know our wrestling coach my senior year wasn't a teacher or associated with the school outside of coming in for the last period and coaching us.....just a regular dude that knew a thing or two about wrestling taking over for the old coach.

 

Similar with the hockey team, although that was bit different as it was initially student driven and we really only used the schools around SoCal to create teams. But then it picked up enough to where the schools acknowledged the sport, handed out letters for varsity, and backed it as a school sport. We just had one of the players dad's coach and I think he stayed with the team even when the schools/districts/etc. got involved.

 

Had a soccer coach like that as well, but for the most part coaches were actual teachers on campus or the gym teachers looked like ex-athletes that simply got a teaching cert.

 

Maybe it's changed since then.

Yeah, my cousin worked as an assistant baseball coach at a HS in SoCal for years on a season stipend basis. They eventually asked him to get a credential so that he could take over as head coach and teach some PE classes.

My high school baseball team had some former students come and assist the coaches during practices.

I don't think any of them had any kind of background checks and I know a couple were doing some shady shit like selling drugs and what not

My tee ball coach had us all personally fitted for cups in his basement. See he makes them himself and he needed to know exactly what size we were so we wouldn't feel uncomfortable. He kept losing the size chart though so he then just took pics to save him time.

I wonder whatever happened to coach Peppers.
