summit21 got a reaction from Taylor in Would you be mad if the Angels signed Corey Seager today?
Yes, managed to avoid a train wreck contract for once! It will age very poorly for the Rangers.

Yes I'd be mad. Seager is extremely overrated to me. His back sucks and struggles to get down on the ball which is pretty important for a SS. When healthy he can hit, but with limited resources I'd be mad if we spent the remaining budget on another "can hit hit when healthy" guy when we need pitching.

summit21 reacted to TroutAdell in Photo of players who have played 3B for the Angels since Troy Glaus (with the exception of Chone Figgins)
In the history of the franchise only two legitimate 3B have been produced by the system, Carney Lansford and Troy Glaus. This is pretty pathetic.

After seven years of hearing from my Yankees and Phillies friends about how he was going to leave, combined with sports media's unrelenting desire for him to go east, this feels awesome.

I don’t get what the benefit of offering him early opt outs is ? Isn’t it frustrating enough worrying about him bouncing now ? Why would the team do that. If they give him an opt out give one, in the middle of the contract when he’s like 32 or 33. I even hate that. Other then that it’s dumb. If the team is going to throw that kind money at him and make that kind of commitment then the player shouldn’t have escape hatches all over the contract so the team is constantly black mailed. Commit or don’t.
Trout is an important piece of the Angels history and is almost certainly the clubs greatest player. Make him an Angels for life and be done with it. It’s good for him, it’s good for the club and it’s good for the fans.

Feel better?

Wow thanks for the hot take.. definitely never been said before.

I don't know about that, they won two AL West titles and nearly a third from 1982-1986 with him as the regular catcher. The pitching staffs gave him solid credit for their success.

Trout's RBI totals the last two seasons: 72, 79.
I'll pass.

If this team’s number one priority was winning right now then yes, you keep him and let it play out. Just like the Nationals did with Bryce.
However, this team isn’t built to win this year and it’s unlikely they’ll be in position to do so next year as well. So hanging onto Trout for the sake of winning a few more meaningless games doesnt do much for us in the big picture. Trading him for a couple pieces to help us compete down the road when this team is ready to compete would help us more.
Unless Arte is more worried about ticket sales over the next two years I just don’t see how keeping Trout makes sense if they get the sense he’s leaving.
The Jays blew their shot at getting something for Donaldson when it was obvious they weren’t going to win last year. I’d hate to see us do the same with Trout.

summit21 reacted to Spirit_of_02 in Predict the date of Trout's new extension with the Angels
I know this is a lot of tea leaf reading but if he truly isn't willing to negotiate during this spring training that is a bad sign. If the Angels approach him with a deal around the $400m mark and he refuses it by saying "I dont want to negotiate yet" then I think he is giving you an answer and saying he doesn't want to be here long term. His trade value now is much higher with two years of control left than it will be next offseason and I think you have to explore the idea of trading him sooner rather than later. His market isn't going to improve or decline in the next year, Harper and Machado are his only two "peers" and they've set the market, so there's no reason for him not to sign an extension now if both parties have mutual interest. If his goal is to make it to free agency and go to the highest bidder then the Angels probably won't win that battle anyway and all you'll get is a compensation pick.
The Angels are in a unique position and it would be organizational malpractice not to get as much trade value as you can out of a generational player that you have control of for two more years. Especially if your probable best case scenario is a second wild spot with that player on the roster.

summit21 reacted to Inside Pitch in Harper and Machado Contracts/Trout Extension
Mike Trout is a unicorn -- he doesn't have the makeup questions hanging over him that Machado has, he hasn't had the performance fluctuations or signs of decline that Harper has. While I think you are right in saying that FA has become a hostile environment I think Trout may be the outlier. All that being said -- the current CBA will still be in effect, he will be 29 years old and if he shows any slippage or injury issues the next two years it may impact his market. The Angels have the least to lose in the sense that they already got a shit ton of plus value out of his "cheaper" years.
The Angels could be really creative in how they go about this, they can go long, front load the contract and add several throwaway years at the back end to drive the AAV down. If you structure a deal where Mike Trout is slated to make chump change in the final couple of seasons then does it matter if he goes AP after age 35?. For instance go 12/420 -- an AAV of 35 Redo the final two years of his current deal (essentially a 10 year extension). Pay him 40 mil per the first 7 years of the contract -- that takes him through his age age 33 season having earned the 280 mil -- more than AP got, 20 mil less than Manny will get. That leaves 140 mil to be paid out over the final 5 years -- if you go 35x3 then you have Mike Trout having earned 385 mil through his age 36 season with two years and 35 mil left to pay out in his age 37 and 38 seasons. You can throw in option years, opt outs -- whatever...
If he's willing to walk away from a deal like that then it likely means his decision isn't entirely about baseball, winning or money...

summit21 reacted to Second Base in Predict the date of Trout's new extension with the Angels
I'll go with November of 2020. He'll have a frame of reference with Machado, Harper and Arenado extensions, and will have experienced the Angels run through the 2020 playoffs with young stars like Jo Adell, Brandon Marsh, Jahmai Jones and Griffin Canning all playing key parts. Trout wants to win and he will see that the Angels are positioned to win for the next half decade, and by dragging out the extensions negotiations to the point before they break for free agency, his agent will have successfully driven the price up to its optimum point, which makes the 8 year, 350 million dollar extension one that he will accept.
It'll happen during the ten day negotiating period the Angels will have with him before other teams are able to negotiate with him. An 11th hour deal is better than none at all.

it's not the team's perspective. it's reality.
7 rounds of a football draft. all players from college and a trace smattering from some euro league
40 rounds of a baseball draft. plus and intl sign period. players starting as young at 16. The Angels have 8 levels of minor league players.
If football or basketball felt they were missing out on a pool of players, they would make further adjustments and increase the number of developmental levels.
Guys from the NBA and NFL drafts walk through the door and are made starters. Often.
When't the last time we've seen an mlb draft pick in the majors the same year?
Other sports have more predictable talent. Therefore, they get more money.
