Hubs got a reaction from fan_since79 in MLB Trade Rumors: Angels Offseason Outlook
The Angels will hire a manager before Free Agency. Once this round of the playoffs are over, they are allowed to start interviews with playoff teams, if they decided to interview someone still remaining in the playoffs. Plus there will only be 4 teams left.
Then, they need a gameplan on how the next three years will look.
2024, If they resign Ohtani, they will undoubtably try to compete. They need to grab another starter then, to go along with Sandoval, Canning, and Detmers. Anderson as they alluded, may be sent out, and they have Suarez ticketed for the pen. So even if Silseth goes to the 5th spot, will they still go with 6? XX, Detmers, Anderson, Sandoval, Canning, Silseth? Not much depth there if they go with 6. They have to improve the pen. Estevez, XX, XX, Joyce, Soriano, Bachman, and Wantz maybe?
They need at least one infielder to go along with Rendon, Rengifo, Neto, Drury, and Schanuel. Maybe it's Fletcher, and Velazquez needs to stay gone. They need an outfielder unless they feel confident with Trout, Adell, Moniak, and Ward. They are probably good at Catcher with O'Hoppe and Thaiss. Maybe they bring in a 3rd if they feel confident using Thaiss sometimes at 1st, but he's a catcher now, right?
They do not have a DH if they do not resign Ohtani, and even if you may see a heavy dose of Trout and Rendon there, they will still need another hitter if they don't resign Ohtani. They are allowed 13 pitchers, and they've had Ohtani as #14 for the past few years. So with 6 starters, they only have a 7 man pen, and 13 hitters. SO DH (or Ohtani), 4 x OF, 6 x INF, 2 x C.
This doesn't seem to be a playoff team, so maybe they will shake it up with some trades.
for 2025, Most of the same crew could be brought back, but pitching could be different. Estevez and Drury are free agents among others.
2026, Rendon is likely cut if still not healthy or performing and they will have a lot of arb eligibles, so...
Gotta put a game plan in place for three years and sell Ohtani on it. Otherwise, they will have to shake it up.

Hubs got a reaction from ELEVEN in Watching my NFL team win
Everyone loved her husband and then he died under semi-suspicious circumstances and she took the Rams and moved them to her home town. I am a 49ers fan because my dad hated her… and raised me as a 49er fan.

Hubs got a reaction from ELEVEN in Watching my NFL team win
makes me realize even more how badly the Angels have been run.
I am usually an optimist with the Angels and other than Nevin, who I felt was unqualified and undeserving when Maddon was fired, I've been pretty positive with most moves. I liked Perry at first, but I didn't like Perry after Joe's book came out which detailed overreaching and infighting and there has been a lot of drama in the Angels organization over the past 7-8 seasons....
But back to the NFL comparison...
Arte is John York. A good businessman that has no idea how to run a professional sports team. He hired some bad coaches and bad executives over his two decades of control,
As a 49ers fan, when Eddie D owned the team John McVay and Carmen Policy were the GM's and Bill Walsh and George Seifert were the coaches the 49ers were riding high. 5 Super Bowl wins in 14 seasons from 1981-1995. With the advent of the salary cap era in 1993 (and free agency) it was a bit harder to build a consistent winner.
But they did great until Eddie DeBartolo was caught up in a bribery scandal (he was not ever charged with bribery), but he ceded control of his shares of the team to his sister and her husband in 2000. After Walsh and Seifert, the 49ers had hit a bit of rough patch with Steve Mariucci as coach and McVay had retired and Policy left for the expansion Browns, (His partnership with 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo ended in the late 1990s due to "mistrust and front-office power plays" -- sound familiar?)
Suddenly the 49ers, who had been the best run organization in the sport, were in turmoil. Then 12 seasons passed. with multiple GM's and head coaches, from Dennis Erickson to Mike Nolan to Mike Singletary and the 49ers made the playoffs once.
Then they hired Jim Harbaugh and Trent Baalke was promoted and the team went though a short-lived period of success, until they were fighting near constantly and the locker room was fractured, they fired Harbaugh and hired two more one and done coaches desperately seeking to recapture their short lived success. The locker room and organization were not stable and then Baalke was fired along with their 2-14 Head Coach Chip Kelly...
York's son, Jed had been given defacto control of the team, but they were known to have a dysfunctional front office and they leaked and it wasn't a well run team under Baalke.
They fixed it with a pair of moves, before the 2017 season. They were looking for a new GM to pair with presumed head coach in waiting Kyle Shanahan. John Lynch had been on the Fox crew for the Atlanta-Seattle Divisional game in 2016-7 playoffs. He was impressed with Shanahan's play calling and had of course played in Denver for his Dad. According to this article from 49erswebzone.com, "One day, something compelled Lynch to call Shanahan. The offensive coordinator shared that he was trying to find the right person to work with and serve as San Francisco's new general manager. Shanahan was having difficulty finding the right fit."
"Without hesitation, I said, 'Well, what about me?'" Lynch commented"
And they eventually hired him, giving him a 6 year contract, and Shanahan's contract matched that length. They were in it together. And they worked with new owner and heir, Jed York, in concert and with his approval and blessing. Supposedly Lynch told York during his interview, that if it got leaked before they agreed on anything that he was considering this, he would turn down the job.
In the 6 years since, the 49ers have built a powerhouse, there have been some ups and downs, but they remain in lockstep and the team is built to be a Super Bowl contender year after year.
The Angels need the same thing. They need their owner, whether it's Arte or someone else, to hire a guy to run things and stay out of the way. They need a manager who works with the GM in lockstep, as a team, and they need to build a world class organization.
If they do that, perhaps they will have the success the 49ers have had recently. If not..

Hubs reacted to Jason in Watching my NFL team win
I’m a Washington fan so football and baseball are pretty similar to me. To be honest, Washington has been run more poorly than the Angels. Hopefully getting rid of Snyder turns that franchise around.

That's all water under the bridge and I'm not burning any daylight doing research for your dumb hypothesis
What we all should be talking about is how many times is Perry going to get away with "I've got to do something", as a reason to change managers, in order to get the same results. The guy is a horrible leader and mentor.

Hubs got a reaction from totdprods in Arbitration Estimates from MLBTR
My thoughts:
Griffin Canning (4.075): $2.5MM -- TENDER Brett Phillips (4.060): $1.4MM -- Non-Tender Luis Rengifo (4.043): $4.2MM -- TENDER, maybe Trade Jaime Barria (4.035): $1.5MM -- Non-Tender Chad Wallach (4.018): $1.1MM -- Non Tender unless you have Stassi retire. Taylor Ward (3.164): $4.5MM -- TENDER Patrick Sandoval (3.149): $5MM -- TENDER, maybe Trade Jared Walsh (3.114): $2.7MM -- Non-Tender, hope to resign to minor league deal Jose Suarez (3.084): $1.1MM -- Maybe Tender, but he's a reliever now. Jose Quijada (3.046): $1MM -- Out for most of 2024, so??? -

Hubs got a reaction from cals in So we blame Arte?
After defending Maddon yesterday (except I agreed on his wacky defensive alignments) and calling out Perry, I suppose I am in the minority.
Just to be sure I am not against the grain in the future, we don't like:
Arte
Carpino
Maddon
Wise
Roger Lodge
and do Like
Minasian (still don't understand why, except he's drafted well)
Bullpen Matrixes
Analytics being the only thing to use to manage games
Gil
And are ambivalent about
Thames
Nevin
Just checking...

It pains me that you’re quoting my story but instead of quoting my story (which is published on here for free), you’re using the link of the clowns who steal all of my stories.

Hubs reacted to Inside Pitch in Manager / GM Candidates
I don't think Maddon is a liar, but his ego is out there. A lot of manager/coaches tend to be, but his basically trying to go against baseball because he thinks it should be played one way was pure hubris.
I think the game is worse off than it was, but I'm not trying to be it's gatekeeper, Im a fan who wants to see their team win and realizes you have to play within the landscape set before you. Again, it's like taking a knife to a gunfight and arguing that it's better if the other guy had a knife despite you having had the option of using a gun.

You're showing your bias here as someone who wants to think Maddon's full of shit and Minasian is telling the truth. I am showing mine saying that Minasian is full of shit and I believe Maddon.

Hubs reacted to SlappyUtilityMIF in Manager / GM Candidates
Defensive alignment goes hand in hand with also pitching that hits their spots consistently to get the desired outcome.... Of a hitter hitting into the shift... IF your pitchers miss their spot, elevate, or don't execute then you are left high and dry.
Which if your pitching analytics don't jive with what your trying to do defensively. Now your screwed again. IF they say this count slider down and away to a right handed hitter and your playing them to pull and they shoot it to right field because you got too much plate or it's elevated. It breaks your shift.

Hubs reacted to gurn67 in Phil Nevin out as Angels manager, Minasian to remain GM
10 months on the job. There wasn't a single month where I felt this team played above it's talent level. A .550 winning pct. gets you to 89 wins. That's either going to get you into the post season, or keep you in it until the final weekend. The Angels didn't even have a single month where they played .550 baseball under Nevin. However, they had 3 of the worst months in franchise history under him.
Month by month with Nevin as manager:
10-12
6-18 (I think most people forget how bad they were in July last year because of the 14 game losing streak earlier)
14-15
16-15
15-14
15-13
14-13
12-11
8-19
9-19
