Double-check his stats, Mark. The Babe hit .288/.448/.537 with 5.2 WAR in his last full year (1935). His final season (1936) he only played 28 games at 0.2 WAR. He was still great in 1932, very good in '33-34, and then just played 28 games in '36.

This has nothing to do with 'image', this has everything to do with performance.  Manny Ramirez has HoF stats regardless, same with A-Rod, nobody can convince me Pujols didn't cheat either, his HARD fall-off indicates something to that degree.   And Pujols has been accused of using PEDs, so he is not completely off the hook.  Don't go walking into walls or people with high baseball IQs.

Yeah, I think there is actually an interesting discussion to be had on this topic, regardless of where it came from. From last night's festivities in honor of Clemente there has been a movement to retire his number league-wide, similar to Jackie. I don't agree, which takes nothing away from the amazing player, and even better human being, that Roberto Clemente was. I think Jackie Robinson was worthy of that honor, but that's where it should stop.

This is kind of where I am as well. Whenever Carew is pictured, it's most often in his powder blue Twins uniform. That's how he's remembered. That being said, he spent seven seasons with the Halos, and put up really good numbers here, just not as amazing as his MIN numbers, which should tell you just how great he was with the Twins. He was an absolute hitting machine. I can see the retirement with both teams based on the numbers. He was an important part of some great Angels teams

What we are seeing is that the issue was never Sosh and it isn't Maddon now.
The problem is the lack of offensive talent (with only a few exceptions) and the terrible pitching.
Overall, the team sucks and the young talent that comes up sucks at the Major League level too.

I think they already picked up Dusty’s 2021 option.

We technically have multiple mvp candidates this year. Fletcher Tendon, Trout and Bundy are all top WAR leaders right now.

He's always in the discussion but I can't say I've payed much attention to baseball outside of the Angels this season

i'm definitely not shitting on anyone's optimism, but i don't think this is the team you expected to see. the angels bullpen continues to be shit even during this 4 game sweep. it just happened to work out.
having said that, i've never expected the angels to finish with the worst record or next either. so, i guess i'm unintentionally shitting on both spectrums of hope for this season. they're not going to make the post season and they're not going to finish high enough to grab one of the top three "gems".
here's the not shitting on hopes part. accepting that neither extreme is likely, then they may as well win or lose as many as they can to create a thrill ride of a season for some fans.

We're in a weird place right now. It's very unlikely we make the playoffs, but at this point it's probably more likely than us getting a top 3 pick.
It's typical. They'll get hot enough to miss the playoffs by a few games and end up with the 12th pick or something.
