Santiago has been fine outside of the big inning or missing spots. He's had the team in games he has pitched except one or two.

I think the Angels are going to go on a huge roll now that they passed the .500 mark. I picked them to go 5-1.

This team isn't awful to watch.  This was a painful series but they were in each game, all three were one run outcomes and if you believe Joe Smith's meltdown in game two was a fluke then you can also argue that 9 times out of 10 the Angels win the opener based on Frieri's save percentage last year.   They were close to being swept by the A's -- they were also very close to having swept the A's.

Current management? Drafting.
 
Their last two drafts were excellent considering they didn't have a first round pick. And I don't give a rat's ass where publications rank our farm system. Our lower levels are pretty solid. And I can clear as day remember BA ranking our farm system the worst in baseball in 2000....

Grant Green and Taylor Lindsey have absolutely nothing to do with Howie's trade value and what the Angels should get for him if they decide to trade him.
 
Trading Howie for a single reliever would be selling an asset for below it's value, and the existence of Grant Green and Taylor Lindsey would make me feel 0% better about that.

I did love what Jerry said about Blanton at Fan Fest. He said Joe had to perform to make the team, but that's not the part I liked. He also said that Joe had a bad baseball season, that doesn't make him an evil person. That's the part I liked. I know we talk about hate and sports hate on here. I truly think that some fans on here took it personal when he performed poorly. It went beyond sports hate. I know we aren't suppose to feel bad for millionaires (I guess), but whenever a career ends there is sadness there, regardless of how poorly he performed. There will come a time when all of us become less productive than we once were and we will have to step aside, that won't be enjoyable for us either.

Plan A: "Hey Joe, why don't you move to the other side of the rubber and see if that helps."
Plan B: "Hey Joe, why don't you move a little further and see if that helps. No, that's okay, just keep moving and we'll tell you when to stop."

I think that at this point, we shouldn't pick up anymore mid-4 ERA starters who have no prospects to improve...and indeed are likely to get worse. I think is the primary takeaway we should have from the whole Blanton SNAFU.
 
Youngish guys that teams have essentially given up on are whom we should be targeting for depth.

Worley may be done -- 27 runners allowed in 10.2 innings after truly horrible season last year.  He allowed 97 baserunners in under 50 innings last year.

Let's see how they feel on April 1.

That's a tough one.  IMO, I think Aybar is on the downslope.  Right now, I'm wondering if Romine might be the better defender.  Aybar is probably a better hitter than Romine.  But Aybar isn't on a level like a Drew.  Aybar is IMO a pretty average hitting SS.  
 
Porcello IMO is what he is.  A #4/5 type pitcher for the reasons I stated above.  But considering our pitching options, that's what we need.  
 
Yeah, I'd probably do a Porcello/Aybar straight up trade.  I'd hope Porcello can give up a low 4 ERA/1.3ish WHIP.  That would be a solid #4/5 for us.  Would let us ease in Skaggs.  Would put a better defense behind the pitchers, which might help their numbers a bit.  Free the spot for Romine to prove he belongs.  And if not, we still have Green.  So it's a position of depth.  Salary wise, probably a wash.  

Reggie Bush and his parents did break the NCAA rules on impermissible benefits.  USC football had no knowledge of those NCAA violations and was not involved in them.  The NCAA's corrupt investigators and infractions committee members lied, lied, lied to assure the Trojan football team was punished and then utilized that opening to put draconian sanctions in place.  If you had read anything on what the NCAA report said and what the recent ruling in the McNair case stated regarding the improper conduct by the NCAA in this matter, you would not be so glib in your comments.

For the 5 million you'd spend on Capuano, I'd fill out AAA rotation with guys with some major league upside. Jurrjens, Niemann, Hanson, Santana.
But if you wanted to go for dependability I could see Harang, Saunders and Zito. My whole outlook is that spending 5 million on Capuano is unnecessary and even detrimental if it forces Skaggs or Santiago out of the rotation. But signing a couple veterans for minor league depth and a spring training invite would help stabilize the system in general and give the Angels the necessary depth to compete.
No team could lose their ace for an extended length and expect to be fine, but if its only a few starts at a time, I don't think a Tommy Hanson type would kill us. In fact it might be entertaining to see Mulder and Johan trying to complete their improbable journeys here.
