If the Angels just got rid of the owner and all the executives they wouldn't be the worst organization in sports.

Chico got a reaction from greginpsca in The Official 2023 MLB Season Thread
I was looking at team hitting stats in MLB this year at the 145 game mark and was wondering where the Angels stood on homers and striking out.
Angels are fourth in MLB in homers with 209 in 146g. (Braves are #1 with 288, far ahead of the rest and will certainly be the only team to top 300HR over a full season)
With strikeouts, the Angels are fifth highest in MLB at 1,346. (Twins at the top with 1,488). There is not one team with under 1,000 strikeouts in 146 games.
I looked further to compare the game with MLB in 1980 and found that the top HR team was the Brewers with 203 (the least was the Mets with 61 homers all year) and the top team that struck out the most was the Cubs with 912. The team with the least amount of strikeouts was Texas with 589. All in 162 games.
Not one team got over 203 HRs and not one team had over 1,000 strikeouts.
I guess they really do swing for the fences more, and they strike out a ton more. It's tiring to watch the HR/SO parade.

With the utter confusion surrounding this team, the massive number of injuries, and everything else, we might be talking about a 10-year rebuild, or longer. There's no light yet at the end of this tunnel.
Arte needs to leave to begin the healing. Without a doubt.

Man, I wish. Like Chuck--and a lot of us--Trout has been a dream come true. I remember back in the 90s after the Mariners come up with Griffey then A-Rod, I thought something to the effect of, "I wish we could have a generational player like that." And we got one - and he was even better than either of those two. But here we are, with Trout undergoing a Griffey-esque collapse.
I still have hope but the last four seasons have been grim.

As Casey Stengel pleaded to his expansion Mets, "can't anyone here play this game?"
The degree of ineptitude reflects an expansion team. The fielding is especially atrocious. There is almost zero speed on the team other than Ohtani. And the base running is often an adventure.
Pitching and hitting are self evidently mediocre. And forget about anyone rising to the occasion in clutch situations. Or leadership.
Isolated individuals from different organizations who can't get in sync and have no chemistry. With many of the players in decline or totally raw and inexperienced. As well as the predictable  usual major injuries to key players.
Led by a manager and coaches who seems to react with a time delayed mindset.
Just trying to fast forward the season and get out of Dodge as fast as possible.

You're wrong. Kay was a drug dealer. A dealer can be an addict but he spreads it around. Look up the Opium Wars. That's what's happening in this country now. How did China get rid of its massive problem of drug dealers and addicts? They killed them. That might be the only way.

I realized like 5 years ago this team would never win anything as long as Arte owns the team.  He's not going to approve a full rebuild.  I 100% expect them to spend more money again this offseason, and again not go over the luxury tax, to try to win with the young group we have + free agents + whatever you get from Trout/Rendon

Sad part about this is the same thing could've been said about this team almost every year since 2015.
Funny thing about this is I used to blame Bane for the Angels being like this 10+ years ago, recalling his infamous line (paraphrasing) "I came here to see a hitter - a player takes a walk, I'm walking to my car"
But for some set of reasons, this team haven't been able to field a team for 162 that can "hit" - other than home runs.
Our OBP/wOBA/RS stats are average, at best, for most seasons.  It's injuries, lack of depth, too-young or 2nd tier players taking too many AB's.
Is it all just bad luck?  Or something else?

I vividly remember reading an article once about how the 02 team made it a point to foul off a lot of pitches in spring training. And how they went in to that year basically pesky as hell, driving up pitch counts, until they got something they could hit on a line.
And they had a phenom offense that year because of it.
But then one time I was having drinks with one of the 02 guys, mentioned that and how cool I thought it was, and he was like "what the hell are you talking about? We didn't do that."
    So I dunno.

I did a data project for fun from the beginning of the season through August 17th. Finding a baseline and helpful data took quite a bit of time. I didn't want to vomit too much data, but figured to share some data snapshots, such as specific counts being met and what follows. I hope this helps a little.
“We want our guys to be aggressive — aggressive in the zone,” said Angels hitting coach Marcus Thames. “Pitchers are trying to get ahead. So I want our guys’ mindset to be ready to go attack. If the ball’s in your zone, be ready to go.” - The Athletic
Looking at RISP, advanced data shows when the Angels have counts 0-1 & 0-2, and they're top in strikeouts and lowest in average. They're in the middle of the pack when they make contact in 0-2 counts. They’re close to average in 1-1 and 2-1 counts. Swinging early has put them in holes, causing them to slip further.
The Angels lead the league in 1st pitch swing percentage, tied for the highest whiff percentage and worst zone contact in MLB. [Provided by Baseball Savant]
For example, in 0-2 counts, the Angels’ batting avg is 30th (.136) and MLB avg is .177, OPS: 25th (MLB avg is .478) Angels are .414. Batted balls in play, the Angels are 29th, and most of the top offensive teams are in the top half. They’re 4th in strikeout rate. When they make contact in 0-2 counts, they’re about average. Surprisingly, they're  2nd in walk % from 0-2 counts. [Found in Fangraphs].
I interpreted it as Angel hitters getting behind early, not making contact in the zone, and with each strike, they are one of the worst teams in the league, making contact as the count has additional strikes and whiffing often. They have too many guys who can’t make contact, miss too much in the zone, and can't adequately work counts. While they can get walks, they fail to put the ball in play and make decent contact. Aggression has made counts tougher to handle, as they’re too challenged as hitters. This could add to why they slump when they get so cold due to a lack of making contact. Maybe scouting is off, but it starts with preparation and putting hitters in better opportunities to succeed.

He'll get picked up by a team that can practically pay him nothing because we're footing the bill, then he'll stay healthy for a prolonged period of time and start raking for them.
Then every series he faces us he'll rock our pitchers for RBI doubles and average 2 homers probably in very clutch situations (His defense is absolutely horrible, so I wouldn't expect that to get any better against us no matter which teams he plays for).
Getting so tired of the same song and dance from these assholes.
