TurboFan reacted to Docwaukee in Tired of the negativity
I just realized that in years past I was only really interested in wins and losses.
This year, I'm legitimately interested in watching a bunch of guys on the team play.  I also like Ron and haven't liked either of our last two managers.
And I'm sorta over the whole Ohtani thing.
I'm ready to see a team that's decent to good at pretty much all positions.
Going back ten years, I would say that I enjoyed watching Trout and Ohtani of course, but outside of that there were very few.  Howie, Richards, Shoemaker, Simmons and that's about it.
This year I will want to see Neto, O'Hoppe, Schanuel, Rengifo, Trout, Ward, Sandoval, Detmers, Soriano, Drury, Canning, and a few others.
They might not win enough to make the playoffs, but I like this team.

    I enjoyed the interview.
I know a lot of fans don't like him.  Some of it may be warranted.  Some of it may not be.  I'm not happy that he hasn't been on the field much, but that's about it.  I'm a fan.  I like him.  I root for him.  I hope he has a monster year.

I absolutely hate posts like this.  Nevin getting let go does not mean that Minasian and Arte blame Nevin for the bad year, and it also doesn’t mean they think they themselves are free of blame.
It means they believe they they can replace Nevin with a better manager.

Who says we won't?  Everyone acting like it's a certainty we won't sign him is being pretty dumb.  He cleared out his locker because he's out for the season.  People need to stop acting like the overreactions of idiots on Twitter tell the story of reality.

It is not a given that any young pitcher is just going to continue to get better. Exhibit A is Detmers and Sandoval. Two steps backwards.  I don’t see evidence that the organization is competent at advancing the craft of young pitchers. I know Phil has expressed faith in Matt Weiss and the players mostly like him and all, but with a long list of pitching underperformances this year, they most definitely need better coaching and development going forward. The pitching was much less affected by injuries than the position players this season, yet they let the team down. Had the youngsters all improved as Phil suggests they do, we would be in a far stronger position today.

Giolito got his first start for Cleveland today. 9 runs in 3.0 innings taking the L.
Twins 20 - Guardians 6. Our momentum has apparently followed him to Cleveland. We’ll see what Clev pitching coaches can do with him the rest of the month. Good to have him off our payroll.

While it's unrealistic to think the team still has a chance, Ohtani hasn't given up yet and won't give up on his teammates.  And I would imagine that many of them haven't given up either even if the odds are way stacked against them.  So whoever he's playing next to in 2024 can respect the fact that he's gonna potentially sacrifice what's probably better for himself and his next team for the one that he's currently on.

Maybe Shohei is playing because he loves the game and he feels that he has a responsibility to the fans and to fulfill the obligation he made when he signed his contract for this season to continue. He's not an ordinary modern player. Most would have already stopped.

The reason I disregarded it is because it’s all stuff that happened 10 years ago involving a bunch of people who no longer work for the Angels.

I think it’s been well chronicled that the Angels have skimped on things besides big league payroll at times during Arte’s tenure. So unless it’s something current or involving current employees, it doesn’t seem newsworthy.

Is it really?  I just have a hard time taking this kind of talk seriously when it comes from anonymous sources.  Maybe it is true.  I know the optics on Rendon looks bad, but I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt.  He once said "WATCHING baseball was boring" and people took that and turned it into "he HATES baseball."
This isn't me defending him.  This is me trying to look at things objectively.  He's had bad luck.  He did something really stupid in Oakland.  I see all that.  Again, the optics look bad.  None of us really know the truth.  And it doesn't help that he won't speak to the media.  I get all that.
I just hope the truth comes out at some point, regardless of what that truth actually is.

TurboFan reacted to T.G. in OC Register: Angels’ Shohei Ohtani faces questions about future in wake of elbow injury
At the end of the day this is a sad development for Ohtani the person.  I can't imagine what is going through his mind right now.
We had a front row seat to the greatest baseball show ever and we watched something truly unique and special.  The word "awesome" is often over used, but that's exactly what Ohtani has been.
His quest to become the best baseball player on the planet was fun to watch.
I have no idea what is next for him, but I wish him the best. He's truly a humble human being who handled the spotlight with the utmost class.  He never acted like he was bigger than the game.
I hope he comes back from this in a huge way and continues to exceed expectations.  I know I wouldn't bet against him.

Another topic on Rendon, sick. Honestly so tired of hearing fans complain about Rendon. He's hurt and he's not even what the roster needs the most right now, get over it. Already have the ReDone Wuss thread which irks me every time I see it because why? What a stupid thread title.
Obviously Stassi has bigger things than baseball going on in his life. We haven't heard about the specifics because it's none of our business. "Family matters" isn't good enough for you? Does it need to be confirmed to you that someone died or something so you can accept his absence? He wasn't even going to be the main catcher on this roster.
And you made a topic on Lorenzen too. Because he threw one of the most random no-hitters we'll see based on his pitching ability. Wow, you're quite on fire this morning. Riveting stuff.

Nevin and Perry have both done a good job with an extremely difficult year.  Truly, what difference would another manager have made? Nevin has been the face of the club in really shitty circumstances and he’s done a great job.  The players seem to like him a lot.  What are we looking for here? You’re shit canning for the sake of it if you fire him.  With the marching orders of “going for it” what else could Perry have done? Also it was correct given the Angels circumstances to go for it.  They just gotta try again next year.  Hopefully with Ohtani.  And if not, I mean they can spend the 40 million+ on other players.

In the pregame interview, Nevin said one of the things Silseth went down to the minors to work on was getting ahead of the count. He applied that to today’s game by throwing a first pitch strike to the first batter. Yikes.

TurboFan reacted to Warfarin in Angels acquire Randal Grichuk and CJ Cron for Jake Madden and Mason Albright (option Cabbage, DFA Padlo, place Ward on 60-day IL)
I think that is probably the crux of the issue.  I don't think most feel anyone THAT significant was traded away (although I do think Quero had more trade value than what he got in return), but rather that it takes some time to draft and develop talent, and by trading a number of prospects away for rentals, that obviously impedes our prospect pipeline.
I think if we had a much better position in the wild card race, few would object to it.  I think the issue moreso is that our odds are fairly low, and it seems that the prospects we are trading are being traded for a low probability outcome.
But I did say this earlier - if all of this helps convince Ohtani to stay, because he sees that his FO / owner will do whatever possible to contend while we are close, then that is obviously more than worth every single traded prospect.

I’m pretty sure that building the farm is not a priority for Perry at this particular moment. Not even a consideration two days before the trade deadline and after committing to all in for 2023.

How about a forth scenario? I know many here think that if the Angels fail to make the playoffs, we lose Ohtani to free agency. I don’t think that is a foregone conclusion. Hear me out. While that might be a logical and correct conclusion for most any shining star, I don’t think Ohtani is just any shining star. He is probably not motivated by top dollar like many we have seen. More than top dollar he wants to play out his career with a team that will partner with him to achieve his true motivation - to be known as the greatest player to ever play the game. The Angels have bent over backwards to be that partner to the point he calls almost all of his own shots on how he is used. I suspect he appreciates that. He knows that some teams will not be so accommodating. Sure the objective of the display of all-in moves made in the last week are for the objective of making the playoffs now, but I suspect that possibly even more than that it is to retain Ohtani in any case, and also demonstrate to Trout that the Angels are dead serious about getting him deep into the postseason as Arte has promised Trout he would try his best to do. So I believe (perhaps a minority opinion) that Ohtani will possibly extend even if the Angels miss the playoffs, as long as Ohtani is impressed by the management’s effort and believes next year will be better (player health being better). I think the Angels should offer Ohtani a high annual salary deal with an opt-out option for him each and every year. In other words, we went all-in balls to the wall in 2023, and we commit to it again in 2024, etc. and if we don’t keep our promise, we won’t hold you here if you would rather leave.  The Angels must say “if we go down, we are going down fighting for all our worth.” Whether they succeed or fail at making playoffs, in this scenario with Ohtani and Trout, the Angels cannot afford to approach it in reserved fashion. And they are not thus far.
