34red4 got a reaction from rafibomb in Los Angeles Angels 2022 MLB Draft Thread
Per Fangraphs: “Neto had an incredible statistical 2021, then reinforced that performance by hitting on Cape Cod, and again by hitting (checks notes) .407/.514/.769 (!) as a junior. He's a compact-framed, contact-oriented middle infielder from a smaller conference, but Neto gets the most out of his body by taking one of the more athletic, high-octane swings in the entire draft. He has a cartoonish leg kick and his hands load similarly to Javier Báez, and while Neto doesn't have quite the same all-world whip as Báez, he is a plus rotational athlete who hits some epic pull-side homers. The huge swing doesn't detract from Neto's feel for contact, though he does dial down his footwork with two strikes and becomes even tougher to make swing and miss. He swung and missed just 10 times all year with two strikes on him. A plus athlete, Neto does some acrobatic things at shortstop and when he puts his whole body into a throw, he appears to have plenty of arm for the left side. He goes out of his way to try to throw while he's on the run, and while Neto's effort level is admirable, he rarely makes anything look easy the way big league shortstops tend to. He has a non-zero shot to stay at short, but I feel more comfortable projecting him to second base. There's enough hit/power combination for Neto to be a first-division regular at second base.”

I think Lorenzen is a work in progress and I wouldn't be surprised if the Angels tried to resign him.  I think they want to see this through and see if he can be a viable piece, moving forward.  He also wants to be an Angel for whatever that's worth.

Between his hamstring and shoulder injuries he gets a pass. But to your point, he's still doing very well considering he's playing through a couple injuries that can be tough to play through.
Unfortunately this team needs him to start playing like his former super elite self. Walsh needs to play like he did at the end of 2020 and the first half of the 2021 season as well.
Would really love for the Angels to make a deal with the Reds to get both Mahle and Drury so that they can make a run!

those four guys on your bench plus a bunch of others are likely going to get over a thousand at bats.  Up to 2000 if you sustain injuries or have to deal with poor performance.  How much value do you get from a guy like Villar over someone like Phil Gosselin?  Over David Fletcher if he continues to struggle.  Over Walsh vs. lefties.  In the OF if even one of Marsh, Adell or Upton struggle.   And for what?  Like 7-8 mil you get two wins.  What do you think the dogs have been doing the last 7 years?   Getting about 3+ wins from their bench every year.  Think super Util Chone Figgins.
And you really think what I mentioned as a catastrophe?  you think there isn't a very real chance that Rengifo sucks?  That Fletcher repeats his season?  That Walsh continues to struggle vs. lefties?  That Upton will suck again?  That at least one of Marsh or Adell won't have that 2-3 WAR year we hope for?  That Stassi won't be below avg at the plate?
Boston, SF, Seattle and others performed well this year because so much went right for them.  Sure it could happen for the halos but why not mitigate your downside if possible.  And it's absolutely possible yet the Angels have been horrible at that the last few years.  I get why but it doesn't need to be that way in 2022.  A couple decent players and maybe 10-12 mil could make a huge difference.
But instead we'll cross our fingers and hope that everyone stays healthy and performs to their career avgs instead of preparing for normal things that happen during 162 games.  I'm not asking for star level replacements at every position.  Just someone better than Gosselin or Rojas to put in the OF or at 2b or 1b.
The biggest mistake teams makes in my opinion is they don't mitigate their downside risk.  And with the emphasis on positional versatility for so many guys, you have a chance to do that.
  7. Thank You

and that's where they'll fail.  They'll get a couple of good starters and ignore things that are as important if not more so.  Like having a legit backup for a guy that finished 125th out of 132 in value as an everyday player.  Or rolling into the season with your primary SS being a guy who's had -0.9 WAR the last couple years with his only replacement being a minor leaguer who progressed 3 minor league levels this year.  Or ignoring the fact that half of the value of your entire bullpen came from one guy that.
The only reason this team didn't lose 100 games last year is because of some decent starter depth and a couple young guys that did well out of the pen.
I literally can repeat myself enough.  They had the worst offense/defense in all of baseball in the second half of last year.  2.5 WAR for half a year.  And Ohtani and Stassi weren't that bad.  You're never going to win when you lose two of your best players but the lack of position player depth is absolutely scary right now.
who's gonna play 2b if Fletcher does what he did last year?
who's gonna play SS.  Just in general.
what if Marsh and Adell struggle? do you put Upton out there and his -0.1 WAR for the last three years?
what if Rendon has a setback?
what do they do with Walsh and his 48 wRC+ vs. lefties?
Stassi had an 84 wRC+ in the second half last year.  Not that having a light hitting C is that big of a deal but it matters when you have 4+ other positions of uncertainty.
Don't ignore the lineup.  In any given season, about 1/4th to 1/3rd of a team's at bats will be from guys who aren't your primary starters.   Roster major league players.  Or guys that have the potential to be.  Don't waiver wire the lineup any more than you would your rotation.

i would think 1,2,3, would be the absolute limit of what the angels could do, or are likely to do, and that's probably stretching.

The only FA SS I would consider would be Semien, and only for a short term years overpay.
Say 2 years for $25 million/season with team option 3rd year to add a little extra with the buyout?
Semien since 2019 supplies solid OBP, power, base running, and defense.
Otherwise, if someone else blows that offer out of the water, make Mayfield the 2022 season’s SS and go from there.
No more long term FA contracts for other teams’ players, plus need to set aside money for Ohtani after 2023.

Agree, and his injury history = avoid him.
    Same goes for Correa.
Already have given my “no thank you” opinion for Baez and his mediocre .302 career OBP.
That would only leave Semien remaining, with his power hitting, plate patience/lower Ks (that Baez could only dream of), baserunning, defense, and durability (only 31 in 2022), plus being a native Californian.
If they could get Semien to bite on say 2 years/$50 million total with 3rd year team option, jump on it.   That should take them to when Paris or Vera is pretty much ready.

New record for post-10th-rder in pool era, surpasses $1.2 million by Chad McClanahan (Brewers, 11th rd, 2016). Florida HS LHP, nice feel for three pitches & deception. Oddly enough, the only position Adell is seni-competent at is CF. He's an embarrassment in the corners.
And yeah, I'm guessing Miami would love to get Adell. But for me, I'm not interested in their prospects outside of Max Meyer. If I'm spending Adell (and then some), I'm expecting Alcantara.

I think the only selling that makes sense is controllable guys. Which isn’t happening. Also not happening? Getting top 100 prospects. I’d trade Iglesias and Cobb and Heaney for a top 100 guy. But it isn’t happening.
