The Angels fielded a wide variety of replacement level players like Nava, Gentry, Giavotella, Choi, Pennington, the list is long. Sometimes it is necessity to squeeze something out of those offense holes, even if it means taking a big lasso of run expectancy data and ignoring it because their is little expectations that those players have a better outcome.
But we are both talking around the facts rather than doing the legwork and pinning them down, situation by situation . I don't have the energy to pursue it so I will handshake with you that run expectancy is a real consideration but it would be much simpler to follow if Eppler can put the players on the field.

He had no ability to chose a safe path to avoid either the ball in play or either fielder. They put up a wall between him and the base. The call was correct simply because no matter who fielded the ball the other player was interfering.
What was amazing was Aybar immediately appealed to the home plate umpire knowing he going to be awarded first base. I'm not sure how many other players in baseball know to make the appeal. It was obvious Melvin doesn't know the rules and played the the game under protest.
