NrM reacted to yk9001 in Hate-betting Albert Pujols
A couple of weeks ago we were at the Chi Sox -Angels game.
I have a bovada account,  and me and my family bet Ohtani over 6.5 strikeouts. Easiest win ever.
A guy sitting next to me hears the convo. Long story short,  he's a bookie, and has an online book.

I join and get a free $100 play.  I see Schwarber is -410 to beat Pujols in the first round.
Put my $100 free play on Schwarber, and I get to bet against the guy who helped ruin my Angels Fandom (along with Gubicza, Moreno, et al)

As Mr. Morgan said to George on Seinfeld:
"You screwed me again, Costanza "

NrM got a reaction from failos in Imagine you're Shohei Ohtani: In what scenario would you sign long-term with the Angels?
Considering his injury history and inconsistencies it might be better if they trade him.

If the Angels weren't a dumpster fire and operated with a payroll that was meant to compete then I would be on board with overpaying.
Their strategy has always been to overpay on big name vets past their prime to fill the stadium. Not to win games.

The Angels looked like a promising team until they had an epic collapse in May. Since they started so hot they are only 10 games back in the Wild Card (or that's what I read in another thread) which is not at all insurmountable. I think the Angels have a chance of resetting the second part of the first half of the season and maybe get off to another hot start like they had done in April before the slump.
No way Ohtani leaves with a guy like Mike Trout by his side. As bad as it has been did Ichiro leave Seattle because they didn't win a championship in his first few years? Given, they were a far better team during Ichiro's early years then the Angels have been with Ohtani.
I believe Ohtani will ride it out for a few more years to see if he and Trout can win a championship together. If it really doesn't turn around after a few more seasons then I wouldn't blame him.
Also, is there a precedent for international superstars leaving a franchise after only five seasons because they suck? I think most of them tend to like the first American city they land in as a second home kind of feeling like they have been adopted into our culture (at least the really good ones) and tend to stick by that place for awhile because of the connection they feel between them and the city/fans.

Marsh putting the hat on celebrating back to back nights with meaningless solo homeruns is so cringy.
It's like the wide receiver going crazy after a TD while they're getting blown out.
    This is embarrassing.

I'm Shohei.  Sell me on why I should stay.  Money?  Do you know how many teams would be willing to back up the truck?
They went into this year with aspirations of winning.  Not just being competitive.  There's been what?  On key injury?  It's been an abject failure.  Beyond what most smart baseball people can even reconcile.   You were supposed to put the team in a position to win.  How can I even remotely trust you.
and that's just the first thing.  Maybe you convince Shohei that it was just a bad luck season or something.  What's your plan?  What in the past 10 years is gonna make me even remotely think you have your shit together?
To me, it's not even about getting Shohei to stay.  It's about Trout wanting to stay.  The expectations coupled with the results for this season could be the defining moment for this franchise.   If I'm Mike Trout, I'd be looking pretty hard at my future right now.  Keeping Ohtani is a pipe dream.

For Shohei’s legacies sake, he should leave this dumpster fire, trash organization. He deserves so much better and a chance to win. That clearly is not going to happen here due to the morons that run this organization.

We'd need to win 10 in a row not to be in the WC, but to legitimately be in the conversation.

NrM reacted to Angelsjunky in Nationals open to moving Juan Soto after he rejects $440 million extension
Soto is probably the best bet to be the top hitter in the majors over the next decade. But due to limited baserunning and defensive abilities, he's more of a 7 WAR guy than a 9 WAR guy like prime Trout. Maybe he has one or two seasons over 8 WAR, but I think his prime level is more in the 7-8 range. Still, one of the best players in the game, and arguably the best hitter already: He's got a career wRC+ of 155, which is third best from 2018-22, and his 165 wRC+ from 2020-22 is tied with Harper, just behind Trout at 170.
He might want to go for a 12-15 year deal that isn't backloaded, and has a player opt out after 6 or 8 years. Six years means he could return to free agency at age 30, 8 years at age 32. So maybe:
    12 x 35 = $420M, with player opt out. Starting next year: 20, 25, 35, 35, 35, 35, 35, 40, 40, 40, 40, 40.
Not sure how he could refuse that, but...

NrM reacted to Second Base in Does the Mets' success this year change your opinion of Billy Eppler?
Eppler brought in Shohei, extended Trout, rebuilt the farm system, re-established a Latin American presence, and most importantly, brought in Kevin Maitan.
He was always a good GM. Good blend of scouting and analytics. So is Minasian.
So now all he has to do is win.

Eppler is ok, DiPoto is ok, Minasian, who knows….but none of them can make chicken salad out of chicken sh*t…you need to be better thank ok to win with a top heavy payroll of underperforming guys like Pujols, Hamilton, Upton and now, Rendon…and with a weak farm system that has to be rebuilt….and an owner who seemingly encouraged the bad spending decisions, limiting payroll flexibility.

I’m the past years, I’d post this and an army of  people would be fighting mad.  Not even @Stradlinghas gotten out of his rocking chair to grab the Angels pom poms.

The hardest thing for me is as a kid, I was demoralized when the Angels screwed up Nolan Ryan’s time here, and then he walked on them.  He was smart.

Trout looks anguished here.  Ohtani is probably doing his best to survive.

The question is could the organization even do anything with the 20 prospects they’d get for those two guys?
