Man, the Yankees losing in the playoffs never gets old. I mean, NEVER gets old. I listened to the 9th on the WFAN Yankees radio feed. Somehow managed to keep my pants on.

Yeah those alleged opinions that CJ should have kept pitching clearly go in direct contrast with all the haters here.

What's funny is that nobody is propping CJ by taking himself out of the rotation because he knows he will hurt the team.
Consider the scenario that CJ tough it out and pitches like he did down the stretch last year.
How many really wants CJ to tough it out.

"Cleveland Indians won't trade infielder Mike Aviles, whose daughter is battling leukemia"Although the Indians have struggled on the field, they haven't lost perspective.  Just only 2 months ago his 4 yr old daughter was diagnosed with cancer and is getting care at one of the best clinics in the nation. He needs to stay close to his daughter at the Cleveland Clinic. Well done Indians!

I was extremely saddened to read about this. I started following motor sports in 1988 when I was 7 years old, so I only saw Buddy Baker race a couple Daytona 500's and the occasional superspeedway race. However, he was always my favorite color commentator and the CBS Sports announcing team of Buddy, Mike Joy, and host Ken Squier is in my opinion the best team NASCAR has ever had.

I don't know how many people here follow NASCAR. I haven't in probably 40 years, other than passively. A driver from the era when I followed closely, Buddy Baker, has been a commentator for the NASCAR Radio on Sirius XM. Baker is leaving the network after announcing that he has a large, inoperable lung tumor. During his racing career Baker won 19 races, including the 1980 Daytona 500.

Agreed with your last post doc. For those who disliked dipoto (and he made some bad moves), people have to understand he basically ran a small market club. Obviously that sounds bullshit. But he inherited a team with great pitching (like now), no farm (aside from trout), a weak bullpen and shit offense. Arte signed albert, i assume dipo signed wilson.
Then the starting pitching implodes (haren falls apart, bad santana shows up, and cj is a let down. Plus weave breaks his arm). Pujols is a let down initially, and the bullpen is a joke.
Going in to 13, when we really needed arms, arte blows his wad on hamilton. Now dipo has pennies to try and replace haren and santana, not to mention a bullpen. Pujols goes on to get hurt, and hamilton is a letdown.
Richards and shoe saved us last year, calhoun came into his own, and dipo did very well to fix the bullpen.
This year he really didnt have money again, and guys who should be hitting arent. He cant buy his way out of it because arte has shut his wallet. We finally have some pieces to trade, but we end up going back to square 1.
Literally, if i have one complaint about arte (theres more than one), its that he spent big on pujols/hamilton (which i applaud him doing regardless of results) but isnt willing to live with the result. I get it, none of us want to dlush money down the toilet, but if the team has a need, and youre making money off the media deal, youre going to have to throw money at the solution umless you have a strong farm (which we dont).

If anyone thinks this was about MS's unwillingness to use advanced metrics then the big picture has been missed.

I actually think MS will use certain metrics and it's clear he's implemented some of this into his style.

This was about the fact that Dipoto wanted to run the show and he was handcuffed in several directions.  He even said that he wasn't able to help the club the way he wanted to.

his budget was pulled out from under him by the pujols and hamilton signings
he was forced to use a pre-existing manager and coaching staff
his farm director wasn't of his choosing
he tried to provide data to the team to help them win and it wasn't implemented to his liking

so every little thing he did was a battle.  he was constantly forced to compromise the way he wanted to do things.

Not only did that wear on him (clearly), but it undermined his authority and bred a lack of respect and trust for what he was trying to do.  It was an accumulation of headaches that shouldn't have been.  He was constantly asking permission to do things he shouldn't have needed to.

When your owner effectively brings in big named players
and your manager gets to pick and choose the which of your ideas he wants to implement
and you have to ask supposed subordinates if its ok to do certain things

then who are the guys on the field accountable to?

this organization set him up to not receive the respect he was entitled to based on his position.

and when he held a meeting with his coaches and manager indicating 'this is how I want things done' he got inappropriate resistance from someone who should have been keeping their mouth shut for fear of losing their job but that persons job wasn't accountable to Jerry.
and when he held another meeting with the players indicating 'this is how I want things done' he got inappropriate backlash from someone because that someone is more accountable to the owner and manager than the gm.

    and like that.....he's gone.

I find it hard to believe Dipoto quit just because Scioscia wasn't implementing his scouting reports. According to Tim Salmon ... Mike was using analytic reports as far back as 2000. He also said Mike was open to using every edge available in those reports. So in reality ... Scioscia was new school before it became fashionable.
Why do I feel Arte had more to do with his resignation than Scioscia did.

I absolutely love flying but I do have that same morbid fascination with aviation crashes. I often do research on crashes and then spend hours looking at pics of the plane when it was intact, etc. I also love reading about the history of airlines and which companies have merged, the whys and hows. I have no knowledge of the ins and outs of the technical side of planes but I greatly enjoy looking at all aircraft whether it's actual aircraft or simply pictures.
My favorite livery was the blue and green Air Florida scheme. I have a 1953 Piper Tri-Pacer in a traditional tattoo styling as part of my sleeve and had it done in a blue and green scheme as a nod to that livery.
I drink out of a Piedmont Airlines mug at work. Ok, that's my story about liking aviation.

bucbrett reacted to Brandon in Devils GM Lou Lamoriello steps down as GM after 28 years
Aside from the teams built, I give a lot of credit to Jacque Lemaire and the neutral zone trap that ended up being so effective they had to change the rules.

But yeah, the teams were sick. The Stevens/Neidermeyer pairing is still my favorite defensive tandem of all-time. So many good players came through the Devils system: Rafalski, Elias, Sykora, Gomez, Guerin, Pederson, Sullivan, Rolston, Morrison, Souray, Madden, Gionta, White, Parise, Zajac. That was kind of the extent of what I remember before the lockouts and losing Center Ice with Devils games in the mid/late 00's.

I just remember it being a factory and every year they were in contention since Brodeur (ha, speaking of someone I shouldn't have left off the list above) came in.

Good luck finding the next guy to hold a GM job in professional sports for 28 years. Lou will stay on as team President. While I am not a Devils fan, I have lots of respect for the way Lou did his job and ran the Devils as one of the NHL's most consistently winning franchises. He deserves a lot more credit and attention than he gets.

The Oilers have had the first overall pick 4 times in the last 6 years. That is just pathetic for the organization and even more for the NHL. No team should be able to be rewarded so much for tanking.
