40 years later that is still the worst move in franchise history.

    Two things...
Heaney and Skaggs have both been successful in the past, and both were heralded as top prospects. Same with Canning and Suarez, who each appeared in top 100's. So the talent is there. The pitchers we've provided White with aren't any less talented than others. Quite the opposite really. But under his tutelage they have failed to do many of the basic things pitchers need to do to succeed. That's on them, as you would say.
I get the feeling that Doug White isn't necessarily someone you bring in to get the best out of a pitcher. He's the sorry of guy that could use advanced statistics to explain why a pitcher is successful, but I've seen zero evidence that he can actually develop a pitcher.
As much as we like to rag on Gubi, when you listen to the telecast, he's a wealth of knowledge and it's all based on experience. Doug White has neither but is the pitching coach. I've noticed Gubicza become increasingly critical of pitch selection lately. He's quick to clarify that the pitch used could've yielded a better result with better location, but the pitch selection is clearly raising eyebrows among an expert.
The Angels pitching is not trending in the right direction. Maybe the pitchers are having a hard time implementing what White wants, or maybe he's only successful if he gets the right sort of pitchers to work with.... Or perhaps it's as I said, he can't develop as much as he can analyze pitchers...
I don't know. But whatever it is, it isn't working.

Cam has served up 2 grand slams for the Astros this season. He is having a good year statistically but he still seems to have trouble at crucial times. I think how Cam is used is more indicative of his performance this season than his stats. I have no confidence in Cam when inheriting runners on base.

How strange that the Angels have played four teams who previously played shitty baseball to all of sudden be playing really well.

A little adversity is a good thing. He rose so quickly it's as if he never had his luggage unpacked for two years. Let him grind out the heat of August and place him on the roster for his cup of coffee in September to learn from Calhoun and Trout how to play a major league outfield. His bat is going to come around, that is not even a question in my mind. I'm more concerned about his defensive skills rising to the level of MLB play.
That is really his make or break. He has the speed, he has the arm strength (although not as good as Calhoun) but can he get that first step in the right direction, track the ball properly and take the right route whether it's to cath the ball, cut it off, play it off the wall or carrom or position properly to throw a runner out.
September is his time to absorb the years of MLB experience from our outfielders and have some things to work on during his break, other than weightlifting, so he is ready for Spring training.

I think Langston mentioned that the Pirates pitching coaches emphasizes fastballs.  The Pirate coaches have Stratton throwing more fastballs while the Angels had him throwing more breaking balls.
I am rapidly losing faith in the Angels pitching staff......

Anyone else getting T-Rex vibes, regarding Suarez?
At this point, he’s like 6th on the current totem pole, and falling further back if two solid guys are signed in the off-season.

it also doesn't mean that they're what they're going to be.  And frankly, all of them have shown some promise.  No one is expecting them to be #1 starters, but depth and mid to back end starter for league min is super important.

I think this gets glossed over due to expectations as we think that every time a player is called up they're going to hit the ground running.
I was looking up some stats as it relates to age for Jose Suarez and realized a couple things about not only Suarez, but Barria, Canning and Sandoval.
Jose Suarez is the second youngest player in mlb to start a game this year.  The youngest is Koby Allard who has started all of one game.  Saurez is also the 4th youngest pitcher to throw in a major league game this year.
Patrick Sandoval is the 3rd youngest player in mlb to make a start this year.
Jaime Barria is the 4th youngest
Griffin Canning is the 5th youngest.
that's not a misprint.   The Angels have 4 of the 5 youngest starters in the majors right now.
I was absolutely astounded by this.
But I think this should give us some perspective and help all of us with our expectations.  It may also make for a good article by @Jeff Fletcher to do a historical comparison about rotation age and/or debuts of pitchers in Halo history.

At first pitch yesterday, I did not think there was a chance to split the series. When the Angels blew a 3-run lead, I did not think there was a chance to win the game. When Bedrosian walked the leadoff batter in the 8th, I did not think there was a chance to get out of the inning scoreless.
THIS is why I still watch the games even though the season has been tremendously frustrating. This is why I am going to miss baseball when the season ends. No matter what has happened previously in the season, or the month, or the week, or even the series… you never know what might happen in any one game.
This team isn't going to be playing in October but they have not given up on the season or each other.
