Rally Gorilla reacted to tdawg87 in Did the lack of an established every day catcher play a role in FA for the Angels?
I don't think so. It's about $$$. I mean, Cole is going to be pitching to Gary Sanchez. The Jays have a bunch of great young catching prospects but no one established.
If the Angels offered Keuchel more money, I'm guessing he would have talked up the infield defense as a selling point.

Rally Gorilla reacted to Slegnaac in This might be unpopular but I think overall Eppler has done well
Eppler certainly hasn't let the Organization crash and burn.  He has made plenty of positive moves, perhaps the biggest being the Trout contract in the face of impending Free Agency.
I would prefer to see him continue to be the GM at least to the end of the 2022 season, when Maddon's contract expires.

    Mike Trout as 19 y.o. rookie:   40 games / .5 WAR
    Anthony Rendon as 23 y.o. rookie:  96 games / 0.0 WAR
So, it's no sure thing Adell is going to make a huge impact on the team this season.
On the other hand 21 y.o. rookie AP played 161 games with a 6.6 WAR, so there's that...

Rally Gorilla reacted to UndertheHalo in Would you trade Jo Adell and sign Nicholas Castellanos if.....
I really think the best thing to do with Adell is to hold onto him.  It would probably be crazy to not trade him today for like Buehler.  I would not trade him for Fried and Toussiant though.

ive said it on here a bunch of times.  I really have an issue trading fielders for pitchers.  I just think when you’re talking about major leaguers, if they’re in the same tier of quality the fielders are just far more valuable and carry far less risk.  You’re asking for trouble swapping them.
To me Adell is so close to the majors and there is so much hype on him that it’s really, really difficult for me to trade him as a “regular” prospect.  It really is like a weird no action zone with him right now.  To me anyway.

They were like 3 games of out of the WC after the last Dodger game.

The next night was the 18-inning loss to the Orioles, which started a 1-6 homestand against Baltimore and Detroit, followed by a 2-8 trip through Cleveland, Cincinnati and Boston.

    And that was that.

He was born in AZ, played at ASU and now he gets to play for the diamondbacks so good for him.  He was one of the few guys in the last decade that came up through the system, turned into an every day player and produced while he wasn't really a highly touted prospect.  I wish him nothing but the best.

    IMHO, the Angels decided that:
    1)  It was going to take a huge overpay to get one of the top five.  (like 9/$324M).
    2)  Overspending on one or maybe even two top five SP was not going to be enough to bring in a ring in 2020.
    3)  Overpaying on pitchers  (who don't tend to age as well and are more prone to career-ending injuries)  was going to hamstring us and leave us in the same predicament we are in now for the foreseeable future.
    4)  While the rest of the big market teams were focused on top 5 SP, we decided to make a play for our new superstar 3B who is a lot more likely to be productive throughout his contract and therefore more likely to help us end our playoff drought  (even if it may take until 2021 or 2022).

The Angels haven’t had a legitimate 3B since Figgins. Rendon stabilizes  the position that the Angels have no legitimate prospect. The same is true for catcher.

Rally Gorilla reacted to Second Base in Angels sign Julio Teheran (1 year, $9 million)
I think one good thing about the Bundy trade and Teheran signing, as unexciting as they were, make it more likely that the last other acquired will likely have to common qualities...
    1. Upside. The Angels need it desperately. They probably need more than one, but that ship has since sailed.
    2. It's unlikely the final pitcher will be acquired via trade, given the asking price and the fact that there remaining free agents won't cost a draft pick or prospects.
Which leads me to the true positive outcome here, which is that Griffin Canning and Patrick Sandoval are likely going to remain in the organization. Both have all sorts of potential, both are major league ready and both likely have a future brighter than that of a back end starter.

Having an extra durable pitcher gives the Angels a little more safety net if they go for the more risky Ryu instead of Keuchel.
