The coaches at 1st & 3rd are forced to wear helmets for their safety but the people right behind the dugouts are on their own. I don't think that the lady sitting 800 feet away has much of a case but I once saw a 10-12 year old kid get drilled by a Dave Winfield lined foul ball. It was really bad and I think eventually MLB have to do something to protect the fans that are sitting really close.

    Let's see:

1 dizzy spell, 1 lights got in my eyes, 1 hamstring pull, 2 claw gestures to teammates, 1 reckless slide into a base with a broken finger, 1 dive for a ball and it goes to the wall,  1 lame exuse for something, 1 wazzup to his former teammates, 1 messy divorce, 1 sold house,  3 texas y'alls, 4 K's, 3 bombs, and a stripper

I believe that the ball boy in right field has a slight disability which may explain his weight. I think that it is great that the Angels are giving him a chance to be a part of the team.

Solid thread. Being condescending to people that you don't know based on speculation is special

All of the pitchers you mentioned suck. No catcher would help them.

Calhoun's obviously in a slump right now; he was playing really well at the beginning of the season and now he's not. I have to think the shuffling in the lineup has something to do with it. He seemed visibly upset during his ABs tonight.

As to the "altercation;" mountain out of a molehill. Getting smacked on the helmet like that before he was about to bat couldn't have been fun, and very well might have thrown him off. It's fair that he would have told Giavotella not to do it again.

Kole overreacted for sure, but this is just another example of Giavotella being clueless.

Don't get me wrong, he's not a bad baseball player, but now I can see why he got limited opportunity with KC.

Anyone ever been hit on the head while wearing a helmet?

Getting your bell rung 10 seconds before you are to bat with the bases loaded isn't something I'd like to have happen.

I think his new nickname gets to be Johnny Jagaloon.

When compared to Iannetta/Joyce/Cron/every other scrub we've been trying not named Trout, Pujols, or Freese, he's still been the most productive player...even since May 1.

Green is nowhere near the bat that Napoli is but I will say that I think he's fine as one of their bench options. He can play a multitude of positions. Certainly would offer more than Featherston IMO. Not sure what that dude has brought to the team this season and I honestly forget he's still on the roster at times

Green hit .273 in his last 7 games. He's only had 20 ABs this year and that's what he's doing. And they send him back down, in favor of Cron, who has done next to nothing this year? Bullshit. It's clear Green's not wanted on this team. That's too bad because IMHO he could do well if he had a steady chance to play.

If they're not going to use him they need to trade him to another team that might actually let him play. Letting him spin his wheels in AAA isn't doing him any favors.

I'm gonna give the Boston boys in blue a bit of a pass here.  They're not solving a crime, they're collecting the evidence for the massive lawsuit that is to follow.

The fact is, there are 2430 major league games every year, not counting exhibition and post season games.  And I can't remember the last time someone suffered a serious injury due to a flying ball or bat at the ballpark.  I'm sure it must have at some point, because that's why we have the existing netting behind home plate everywhere.

The reason it's rare for _players_ to be hurt this way is because of the lack of crowding on the field - same reason it's rare for a baserunner to be out for being struck by a batted ball - the angle has to be _perfect_ to hit them.  But the stands, especially in the good seats near the bases at field level, are usually densely packed.  Anything that goes in that direction has a decent chance to strike someone, in the head, neck, or upper chest.

Yes, that's exactly right. Each of the five boros is a county; together they form NYC. It's like the Voltron lions when they assemble; lots of parts coming together as one. And NYC is a real incorporated city, not a "city."

The counties in NYC are very different than regular counties in that they don't have the power to make their own laws and ordinances and such. All municipal services, schools, taxes, are centralized. If you're in Queens you're in the same school system, pay the same sales tax and follow the same laws as someone over in Staten Island, etc. The only exception to that is the library system for some reason -- Brooklyn and Queens each have their own library system while the other three boros have the NY Public Library system. The boro presidents, etc. are pretty much the equivalent of spokespeople or advocates -- they talk to the residents in their boros, report back to the City Council on what people want, and can file proposals to City Council, but they don't have power to make laws on their own.
There are a bunch of reasons for the counties -- one is that the boros actually all joined NYC at different times (Brooklyn was actually its own city until 1895 IIRC and was not connected to NYC at all, for example). Another is for organization's sake -- there are so many people that it is easier to subdivide. It's a lot easier for someone in, say, Staten Island, to go to their local county courthouse to get something done than to try to trek to lower Manhattan to do it.

What Alvarado said could possibly have been phrased better, yes. but IMHO the ticket prices speak for themselves. You can get a seat at most Angels games for less than the price of a movie ticket. You can get something from their value merch range for less than $10. Concession prices are insane, but they do let you bring food in. They're clearly trying to keep the games accessible to as many people as possible.

MLB *has* become inaccessible to many in some cities, but that's not the case with the Angels at this time. It's a far cry from something like the Yankees franchise, which built their new stadium with taxpayer funds, and then turned around and priced tickets so high that they were out of reach to many of those New York taxpayers.

To be honest, that Orange County Register article really gave me a negative feeling.  Despite what some people in this thread have stated, the Angels have clearly geared their home experience to a wealthier crowd and I just think that sends the wrong message to the "average fan".

I commented about this on Facebook yesterday and Geoff (LightTheHalo) brought up an interesting point:

The Angels don't have to pay the City of Anaheim for the use of the stadium until they sell 2.6 million tickets.  After that, the Angels have to pay the city $2 for every ticket sold.  It is very possible, that Arte's financial team has figured out how many tickets they need to sell a season to wealthier fans, still turn a profit and that number of tickets just might be less than 3 million.  So not only is Arte still making a profit, but he is sticking it to the City of Anaheim by the Angels not selling that many tickets over 2.6 million.

No matter what the reason Arte has chosen to do this, I don't care for their decision and I think it is the wrong choice.  Am I going to stop being a fan over it?  Of course not, but I'd sure had to see the next generation of Angels fans get smaller because of this reason.

This. LA has a tremendous amount of wonderful things to offer -- amazing art and literary scenes, lots of diversity, beautiful landmarks and natural areas like Griffith Park, Palos Verdes and so much more. I'd challenge anyone here to spend some time tidepooling in Palos Verdes, surfing in Malibu or hiking at Vasquez Rocks (which is actually in LA County), and then tell me it's a smoggy cesspool. And the various areas in the Greater LA area are so different from each other that in some ways, going from one to another is like going to completely different counties.

And in terms of crime, as per the FBI's crime rankings and other rankings, Los Angeles doesn't even place in the top 10 most dangerous cities. Places like Detroit, Oakland, St Louis, Baltimore, Newark, etc. are way ahead of it. http://lawstreetmedia.com/crime-america-2015-top-10-dangerous-cities-200000-2/

The LA metro area does have Angels fans who are NOT Dodgers fans, as well -- I am one of them.

The Angels originally started out in LA; there's the argument about keeping the name to recognize that heritage. There's the point that LA is more well known than Anaheim and thus easier for non-local viewers to grasp -- the same way the Diamondbacks, Rockies and Rangers don't use the name of the cities they're actually in, but use the more recognizable state names. Or the way the NY Jets and Giants in football don't actually play in NY.

I like having LA in the name, but quite honestly I don't care if the team is officially called the California West Coast Angels of Anaheim Which is in Orange County but Near Los Angeles or whatever. They're just going to be called the Angels regardless. I would rather worry about what they do on the field than the city name.
