AngelsAndRamsFan reacted to Mudville in Time to trade Trumbo?
Trading Trumbo for Cliff Lee is the example of going from 75 to 80 wins while adding another $20+ million to the payrol. Just plain dumb.
I thought the whole idea was cram your lineup with plenty of cheap club control studs and yet here is another move backwards step promoted by guys with a fantasy league team.
We are stuck with Pujols and Hamilton and whatever the provide for offense but stripping away another big part of a faltering offense for a pitcher to lose 3-1 just makes little sense. In fact it makes no sense other than making moves to say you are working on a problem by drilling holes in the bottom of the ship so it sinks evenly from all sides.

AngelsAndRamsFan reacted to Inside Pitch in Jason Vargas: Sign to an extension or trade for prospects?
Only in Angel land is a well above league average 2B (Career OPS+ 108) signed to a team friendly deal considered expendable and a barely above league average (career ERA+ 91) SP someone you build around.

Jason Vargas is a middle to back end of the rotation guy.  If this team is tanking at the deadline, and someone is offering real value, tell him thanks, tell him you would really like to re-sign him, but you try to make the team better and trade him, particularly if the team still intends to roll Blanton out and has Williams in the pen.

Weaver and Vargas are supposedly close, his family is nearby..   He may love it somewhere else, he may like his family, being close to home and playing with a college teammate.

He might even like playing for a team better than the one he's currently playing for.

Assuming fair market value on a trade or an extension, I say trade him.

This team isn't one or two pieces away and the farm system is decimated. We aren't winning the division in the near future with a team that nearly everyone (Trout and Bourjos excepted) is in their prime or past their prime. This team is going to get worse before it gets better. I think it's better to lower payroll and rebuild the farm quickly than to add more payroll trying to fight our way out of the quicksand and just burying ourselves deeper in it. Trade everyone you can not named Trout. Will be be the Pirates of the last 20 years for 2 or 3 years? Yes. But if we can get enough good AA or AAA players we could be the A's of the last two season by year 3 or 4.

It's always nice when the Rangers lose. It helps the A's, but it doesn't really impact the Angels.

Even bad teams have winning streaks and play well over a short period of time. Houston has won 3 straight games. Toronto has won 4 straight and 7 of 10.

AngelsAndRamsFan reacted to jshep in Aybar and Kendrick
We're all aware that the Aybar and Kendrick extensions are among the few on this team that HAVE worked out pretty well, right?

They're not perfect players, but they've both delivered good value on reasonable deals.

The idea that "they're not the kind of players you win with" is just odd.

And the Kendrick and Aybar extensions didn't FORCE the team to trade Segura. That was a function of the team's perhaps ill-advised perpetual desire to be all in

And I still don't think trading Segura was the problem, as much as trading Segura for a rental was. If we managed to get a top tier pitching prospect for Segura like the Reds did for Didi Gregorious, I would have been fine with that.

Trout has honestly been pretty mediocre in both OF positions this year, all things considered.  UZR and a few other metrics confirm this as well, although it has been a somewhat small sample size.  His arm is also ridiculously weak for CF, as we've seen it being taken advantage of by baserunners numerous times this year already.

There's no legitimate argument really for keeping him in CF, other than the opinion that somehow playing CF makes him hit better.  Or that playing him there will keep him happy and make him more likely to sign long-term.

Vargas deserves some blame as well.

I was torn on Hamilton. He has grossly underachieved offensively. His defense has been very solid, however. That is the only thing that keeps him from getting that F. I will not argue, though, with the 'F' designation. I agree with Trumbo, though he is still prone to long streaks of slumping. Trout is my favorite player, but he is still not delivering the big hit in critical situations like I think he should be, and a couple of his routes in the OF have resulted in runs. Still, he will, with his great talent, produce fantastic stats again.

Bourjos stole MHD's girl in kindergarten and has been plotting against him ever since.
Granted, that girl went on to become a 300 pound lesbian but it's the principle of the thing.

AngelsAndRamsFan reacted to gotbeer in Would you resign Vargas after this year?
This should tell you how the market is developing.

Last years free agency class, only 1 pitcher received 6 years.  Greinke (6/$147).  Only one pitcher received 5 years, Sanchez (5/$80).  And only one pitcher received 4 years, Edwin Jackson (4/$52).

Of the remaining pitchers, those that received over $10 million a year average.  Lohse 3/$33, Peavy 2/$29, Kuroda 1/$15, Dempster 2/$26, Haren 1/$13.

Rivera 1/$10 and Soriano 2/$28 also received over $10, but they are closers.

The blocked argument is ridiculous IMO. We could have gotten more for him in the offseason -- preferably somebody who wasn't going to be an FA in 2 months without the ability of getting a draft pick as compensation if he signed else where.
