A hard to pronounce name?

I think we were fortunate to have Howie for 9 years.....and I think we are fortunate that DiPoto and the front office thought Gia was worth a shot....and there is nothing that makes those opinions mutually exclusive...

Thought the comparison was overused early, before we really saw enough of him, but he really is Eckstein Part Deuce...not just a scrappy overachiever (also overused) but the kid is a winner....so was Eck....you can be a scrappy overachiever and not necessarily be as productive as he has been....heck, you can be talented and not be as productive as he's been....the kid, from two months of sample size, is just a winner....

I have nothing bad to say about Giavotella. He is performing above his career numbers even though those are scattered at bats across years of bouncing up and down the minors.
It is a tough group of 2nd basemen he is competing against for respect. While offense has been down the last few years the 2nd base position seems to be full of guys playing better than league average.
Currently there are 8 players batting over. 290 and 7 with an OPS over. 800, Kendrick is at .792. Giavotella is looking pretty weak at a sub 700 but, as people have posted, he gets his hitting in with runners on base. That fills in for his OPS that is stunted by a lack of power.
The Angels could have fared far worse this offseason letting Giavotella slip through the cracks, either by not picking him up or ignoring his spring training in favor of a veteran safe bet.

Signing him.  Cutting bait when they knew it wasn't ever going to work shouldn't be confused with supidity so much as it's admission of their initial stupidity.
 
 
 
Does signing Weaver for less than market value count as stupid or sweet?  Where does trading for Skaggs and Santiago fall?  How about Conger for Trop and Perez?  Street and the subsequent extension?
 
Seems to me their biggest mistakes came from doing things fans wanted to see -- like spending big money or trading for "proven" HR hitters.

We all knew Napoli was an poor defensive catcher and there were plenty that saw the CERA on the wall for his career behind the plate. It didn't mean they needed to trade him at the time, he was useful in the DH and platoon at 1st base role.

I'm not sure if anyone has noticed, but Randal Grichuck has been very good since coming back from his back strain.
 
He's OPS is now around .925.  This kid has a lot of upside.   This is the player, not Bourjous, that the Angels should regret giving up.  He'd look very good in the Angels OF this season.

He's got enough talent that it's not time to panic....but he needs to start showing something....

I'd rather keep Hector, who has tons more drive and desire than Wilson, and is just now maturing into a good pitcher.

No way you send Hector to the Dogs.  Id rather have an insanely deep rotation and let the offense figure it out or find some other way to improve it.  Sending one of our best pitchers to the Dogs is a stupid idea.  

There is a reason I don't bother with saber metrics ... Dawg just proved my point.

True....but would you rather have Rutledge or Diaz right now?  I think I'd still take the young arm....You have my permission to bump this again when Rutledge becomes a solid everyday big league player....

Have to wait and see how strong Skaggs comes back....but if Perez is a Benji type for 7/8 years (pump the brakes after one game but he has been very good since winter ball, not just last night) and Tropeano settles in is a middle to back end of the rotation guy, that would be a steal of a deal....
