Kubitza will likely start 2015 in Triple-A, but Dipoto said he’d be “mildly surprised” if he isn’t at least a September callup. #Angels

I thought the Angels would really regret losing Segura, but then they got Rondon.  I thought they'd reget losing Rondon, Morris and Alvarez.  But they replaced Rondon with Baldoquin, Morris with Heaney and Tropeano and Alvarez with Gott and now Hyatt.

Dipoto uses prospects as currency, but he's smart enough not to deplete his system.  He does what he needs to restock it.  Smart man.

    Quiet is an excellent read.
I find myself having trouble with small talk as well. I'd rather talk about personal things, but for some people its awkward to start personal. Therefore, I'll come off as indifferent or uninterested or just creepy at times and conversations never get started. I can sit for 12+ hours at the poker table and never lose interest. Its a good mix of being among people while not being obligated to hold a conversation throughout. I dread speaking in front of large groups. When my brother got married I was co-best man. I had to make a speech and I was terrified. I knew it meant a lot to my brother so I studied hard and performed in front of my mirror for weeks until I memorized every word and expression. Eventually I gave an 8 minute speech and was congratulated by many people I didn't even know. A few told me it was one of the best speeches they had ever heard. I was one of the greatest moments of my life, because I got to share it with my family. I was drained for a week, but relieved.

*I heart AW because if it wasn't for you guys as a whole I would still be a shy little hermit kid with no spine. I grew with this group in a big way.  (Spring Training '09 - Thank you)  I will always remember where I came from.

Since there are several introverts on AW, I thought it would be fun to create a thread for us to share experiences, vent, and give insight into what it means to live as an introvert in an extroverted culture.
First of all, the book "Quiet" by Susan Cain was life-changing for me. I don't agree with everything she says (she does some generalizing), but I think it's a highly important read for introverts as well as extroverts who want to understand what makes us tick.
My story in a nutshell: I am an introvert who works full time as a middle school pastor at a large evangelical church. I love what I do and have found great fulfillment in it. But the bulk of my responsibilities involve interacting with people and there is a lot of social pressure to be outgoing and meet as many people as I can. I often have to "play the extrovert," which I'm getting better at, but these times of intense social interaction are typically bookended with valuable social recharge time.
Church was tough for me growing up, as the church I went to consisted of services that were loud, crowded, and high-energy. The church I now work at is smaller than the church I grew up in, but it has a similar methodology. The good news is that I have a heart for quieter students who don't naturally fit in to an extroverted environment. Still, I often doubt myself and imagine that my life would be a lot easier if I were an extrovert. Or I wonder if I would be better suited working in a job that didn't require a whole lot of social interaction.
I like what Stradling said in the fast food thread about his mentor, who wasn't incredibly social but was still able to thrive in his leadership position. I try to constantly remind myself that my introversion is not a weakness but instead can be an asset in my life, career, and ministry.
    What's your story?

DerekGMZ reacted to Second Base in Harper
There's just something that happens to people who have been told their whole life that they're better than everyone else.  Harper's had to experience that.  I mean he was even on the cover of SI at 16.  If that doesn't tell you as a kid that you're above everyone else, then nothing else does.  Plus he had to grow up around the glitz and glam of Vegas, where everything and everyone that's "good" is eccentric and displayed in bright lights.

Suddenly, he's an adult and people act surprised that he's turned into a total douche.  And it's only going to get worse, just like with A-Rod.

Whereas, compare it to the blue-collar upbringing of Trout.  He was middle class, his parents were teachers and he grew up in a random small town.  He grew up on stories of how much hard work it takes to be a ball player, how much hard work it is to be a teacher and that we don't cause attention to ourselves because this is a team game.

Now you see Trout the adult.  Humble, does it for the team.  Just a good guy.

There's the difference.  It's not so much what they do now as much as it is a culmination of their life experiences.

    Dipoto had one bad offseason.

His first year he added Wilson to a staff that was touted as one the best in baseball.  One that he inherited and it promptly fell apart in the first month of the 2012 season.  The move to bring in Greinke was panned but what he gave up hasn't really amounted to much.  Segura still has potential but after a great 1/2 season he's been pretty weak.  Although he gets a pass because of the horrible loss of his son.
But CJ has been CJ for the past 3 years.  He's given about what was expected.  Maybe a bit less.
Pujols is on Arte for sure.  A franchise move and his sharp decline so early in the deal is unprecedented for an inner circle hall of famer.
But the 2012 team won 89.

The following year he had to rebuild 3/5ths of a rotation and an entire bullpen.  A mess he didn't create.  Santana was arguably the worst SP in baseball in 2012 and he wasn't worth the option he was owed.  His success since isn't a mystery, but to keep him around would have been more risky than not.
The addition of Hamilton was all Arte and left JD with very little payroll to accomplish the above.  I am fairly sure the reigns were being pulled in regards to what he was allowed to do in trade.  But the Blanton, Hanson, and Madsen moves were horrific no doubt.  He had other options and chose poorly.  The Burnett move was reasonable and didn't work out.

I think last year he was given more freedom to do what he needed and it worked out.

This year we'll see but what he has done so far is sound.

My one major nit aside from who he chose to man the rotation last year was his neglect of the bullpen for 3 offseasons and 2.5 regular seasons.  He went saber cheap at it was the achilles heel of the team until he decided that it mattered and then the team took off.

But he and his staff have consistently shown the ability to do something very important and that is evaluate talent that isn't generally well known.  Both with the Halos and players on other teams.  While his track record for bringing in a known quantity hasn't been superlative, what he gives up hasn't done much, and what he keeps does.  And when he moves a known entity for a lesser known player, those lesser known players have succeeded far more than the players he's moved.  Some of that is yet to be determined.

After the 2012 season when the rotation fell apart, he started 2013 with Weaver, Wilson, Vargas, Blanton and Hanson in the rotation with depth of Williams, Billy Buckner, Barry Enright, Michael Roth, Matt Shoemaker, Daniel Stange, and Garret Richards.  Our top 20 prospects had Cam Bedrosian, Nick Mutz, Daniel Tillman, Nick Maronde, AJ Schugel, Michael Clevinger, RJ Alvarez, and Austin Wood.

Fast forward to the 2014 offseason, and our rotation is Richards, Weaver, Shoemaker, Santiago, Wilson, with depth of Skaggs, Heaney, Tropeano, Jose Alvarez, Rucinski, and Newcomb.  And our top 20 prospect list has maybe 4-5 guys that were present when Dipoto was hired.

Not to mention he remade the entire pen in 1/2 a season, and it's stocked with depth.  Plus, the system has a bunch of major league capable arms that could find their way to the pen if they don't succeed as starters.

This org was in real trouble after the 2013 season.  No farm.  No pitching.  No international presence.  Where they have come in 1yr is pretty amazing.

Hello everyone, my name is Elaina and I am Mike's (aka PercySquint) daughter. I have tears in my eyes as I write this-- I am so incredibly moved by the kindness of the community on AngelsWin.com.
As you know, my dad had a brief (just over 2 months) battle with cancer. We were shocked at his sudden passing, and not a day goes by where I reach for the phone to call him. It's just surreal. My four year old son and especially my two year old daughter, with whom he had a special bond, ask about him, wonder out loud if he is looking out for us, and shout "Hi Grandad!" from the backseat of the car, anytime we drive past Anaheim Stadium and the big A.
I've always known he was a diehard fan, and have countless memories of going to games with him growing up. But I didn't know about his presence in this forum until after he passed, and what a gem it's been for me to discover. His wacky posts, all of the photos of him in that unforgettable hat, and the touching tributes many of you left upon hearing the news that he had died. My husband and I read through each one together, laughing at some memories, crying at others, and blown away by the amount of people whose lives he touched.
From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank this community for remembering my dad. For the unbelievable kindness you shared by raising funds for the kiddos. For the touching tributes in the jerseys and Angels sweatshirts, which they will proudly wear in memory of their Grandad. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I know my Dad is having a blast watching all of this unfold from above, and I know he'll be there when I take my daughter to her first Angels game, and when my son starts pony tee-ball in the spring. He'll be there with all of you guys, his buddies, as future seasons (and hopefully playoffs) unfold.
A million times over, thank you.
