let's use the Simmons example because we did exactly what you are talking about.  We gave up prospects for a good young player that actually got better.  
was that a smart move?  where were the corresponding other moves to complement that?  
You are sticking with your fictitious scenario and trying to force others to stick to your fictitious scenario yet if someone doesn't, you are telling people they don't get it.  
Because you think it seemed so obvious that Yelich was going to turn into an 8 WAR player in 2018, please make a list of the players available in trade that are going break out and put up 8 WAR seasons in 2019.  
Are you asking whether the Angels should consider trading for young star players with a ton of club control?  Of course.  And we have no idea if Billy made a solid offer for Yelich.  At the end of the day, it's not his choice.  The other team has to accept it.  
saying we should trade for X player because he's available and then make 'corresponding moves' is a fart in a stiff wind.  There are 29 other teams that wish they could have traded for Yelich.  Just like there are 23 other teams that wish they could have drafted Mike Trout.

When I see Harper standing around batting practice, I see a truly gifted power hitter that loves himself and hasn't fully figured out how to present himself correctly.
When I see Machado, I see another truly gifted player that appears selfish and conceited and thinks his greatness allows him to slack.
When I see Trout, I see a truly gifted player mature way past his years, that 100% gets how to behave and who holds himself to a HIGHER standard than his performance would realistically afford him.  I almost see him in black and white as if I am seeing a documentary on an all time legend.
The worst thing you could say about Trout is you suspect he is "acting" the role.  And yet even if it is a pure act, you at least would have to give him credit for knowing how to be and having the maturity and discipline to execute the act.
He really is a different cat compared to the other two.

The Red Sux are paying 4 starting pitchers a total of 83 million for 2019......and will still owe Panda 23 million, and Many Ramirez 2 million, and a guy named Rusney Castillo 11 million dollars.
 

I find it more encouraging.  This is not a smart move for a franchise interested in long term success.
