Exactly. We have enough (one-year, hopefully) slots open on next year's staff that this makes complete sense.

Don't you guys remember Drew Pomeranz? You take lefties with good stuff that havent succeeded in the majors (particularly because of unfavorable hitting parks), get them stretched out and roll the dice.
And BTW, if the Angels are really intending to compete in 2017, I wouldn't be targeting the Oberholtzers of the world. I think they're buying lottery tickets to compete in 2018 and beyond.

Decent offense and a terrible bullpen are the hallmark of teams who fail to live up to their run differential.

Sort of trippy the David Carpenter most people might remember was last a member of the Angels, while the David Carpenter you're talking about was last with the Braves...

Yes and no...   There is always reliever volatility but for a period of time we seemingly traded every mediocre or failed SP we had in the system away - those guys tend to become the lifeblood of BPs.   Percy, Shields -- both were failed starters.  Mariano Rivera...  also a failed starter.  He had been used only as a SP in the minors from 1991 right up until the end of the 95 season.
The one good thing about JD having drafted all those low ceiling SPs is that unless we continue to trade them all away we will likely see a few of them be converted to RPs and be better off for it.  Middelton is probably the most obvious example currently.

Additionally: He got Pujols and Wilson in one winter's meeting. Remember: Angels fans were DESPERATE to sign the big name that off-season after being repeatedly spurned.

Signing Pujols is like going to an expensive restaurant and getting merely decent to pretty good food. So you could look at it two ways: one, it is a terrible disappointment from what you were expecting and paid for, and two, at least it is reasonably tasty. Both are true.
Since joining the Angels, this is where Pujols ranks in the majors:
    #98 in fWAR (9.6).
    #56 in wRC+ (120).
    #76 in wOBA (.339).
To put that another way, during his tenure as an Angel, Albert has been the 98th best player in the majors, the 56th best offensive contributor, and the 76th best hitter.
So we could say that Albert has been pretty good, but we can also say that he's been hugely disappointing.

Who was the alternative? The point eater was making was that this team had to scramble to replace 4 starting pitchers in the middle lf the season, with nothing to trade and no free agents. I doubt they instsntly thought of lincicum when richards went down. But like i mentioned a few months back in the chacin sucks thread, somebody actually has to throw the baseball to the catcher. Beggars cant be choosers

Actually, BABIP is a better indicator of pitchers luck than it is hitters; Individuals can have consistently high or low BABIP, but hitters as a group are around .300. Matt Kemp has a career BABIP around .340, for instance.
I think of him as a useful backup. 70% of his plate appearances end in an out. While I will give him credit for improving his plate discipline this year, it still isn't good. His 2015 was super fluky (his BABIP was pretty far above his career norms). Having said all of that, he really could have a 4-5 season run as a solid outfielder with punch, or hell: he could be Mark Trumbo 2.0 (now with defense!). I just don't know that I'd want him as a starting OF in a normal situation (would be a godsend for this team), especially since power is going to get him WAY overpaid come arbitration time.
And thanks for the compliments. I have actually been around here for a while; I just took a break and couldn't remember my log in passwords-- and the email account I used hasn't been touched in four years.  I used to be known 'round here as  Long Reliever (I actually made the post reporting the Pujols signing), and then I wrote a few things for Angelswin.com as well (Greg Bearringer).

This is %100 true. We really are pretty good on offense. There are a surprising number of good options for left field (Reddick, Saunders, Fowler, heck even John Jay) and Justin Turner might be a good option as well. Hell, even Steve Pierce could have a good role on this club. The only turd in this punch bowl is that the Angels need about 4-6 pitchers (2-3 starters, at least 1 good bullpen option) and I just don't know that we can get the caliber of pitchers we need. Makes me wonder if someone like Cron could be on the move;there is more power in the market than there are arms, and we NEEED arms.

I agree.  My only tweaks/ suggestions:
    1. DOUBLE the bonus pool for each team, if the "slotting" system has to remain.
    2. If they really want teams to benefit from losing a free agent, they could just have a comp round after the 1st, where the 10 teams that have lost the most net production from the year before due to free agency get a pick. That's it. I get that this rule was more about protecting smaller clubs from getting raided by the Yankees, but that's a joke these days. Local networks, internet money: If any team really wants a player in free agency, they can get them.
    3. Make picks in the 1st and 2nd round tradeable; would have to include a "Stepien" rule about having to make a first round pick at least every-other year. After that, I am OK with No trades after the first round (the draft is long enough not to have to include windows between picks to allow for trading).
    4. I'd like for them to design a way for the draft to eventually just include all amateur players. I sort of see why there has to be an international draft, but I don't know if that will be true in 10 years.
    5. Abolish the freaking competitive balance picks. It's just dumb. Does anyone REALLY think the Reds or the Cardinals need extra early round picks?
