wopphil got a reaction from Lou in MLB suspends Trevor Bauer for TWO seasons
It makes a lot of sense for Bauer to fight this. At about $250,000 per game in salary, it won’t take much of a reduction in the suspension to make it a financially smart move.
If I were representing Bauer, my strategy would be two-fold. First, I would get into the details of the evidence upon which they found policy violations. This is obvious, of course, but I think you have to attack every single piece of evidence and make MLB take a position as to why they found Bauer’s accusers more credible than Bauer on each such item of evidence. Make MLB justify every single conclusion they reached by aggressively questioning their witnesses and the other evidence upon which they made their findings. And if the arbitrators find Bauer credible (and they might, even though everyone agrees he is an asshole), they might not be totally convinced of MLB’s factual conclusions. Also, it’s one thing for these accusers to speak with an investigator over the phone, and another thing altogether to testify in person. Bauer may have an advantage if he testifies in the appeal (especially if that testimony goes un-rebutted by his accusers).
And second, and perhaps even more important, you have to attack the length of the suspension. You do this primarily by comparing Bauer’s case with others to show that he is being treated more harshly than others who have been found to violate the policy. This should be easy to do. Make Manfred explain and try to justify why he is treating Bauer differently than others who have violated the policy. Even if Bauer gets just half a year trimmed from his suspension, that’s $20,000,000.

Well said @wopphil. You sound like a smart guy.

Keep in mind Newcomb had a Bb/9 of 4.9 in the minor leagues. His control leaves a lot to be desired, and he is no sure thing.
But losing Newcomb and Ellis both does hurt.

Maybe I am an asshole, but I despise the fucking Russians. They are pieces of shit now, just as they have been the last 80+ years. I’d love to see Ukraine exterminate them all.

wopphil got a reaction from Justin in This team is not magical
Did I really write that, or did someone change it? I did not mean Adell, I meant Rendon. Probably a brain fart on my part.

Do not take this team too seriously.
I did for 50 years but decided it was not worth the frustration.
Just enjoy one game at a time and don't expect much.
My goal is to see how close the Angels can get to .500

wopphil got a reaction from Torridd in AngelsWin Today: An Optimistic & Disappointing View of the Angels 2022 Club
I think this team is one very good starting pitcher away from competing for the division. And it’s frustrating because they could have acquired that starter (Ray or Gausman) for a relatively reasonable price. It feels like a job unfinished.

wopphil got a reaction from stormngt in Angels DFA Justin Upton, reinstate Ty Buttrey
I don’t think the move makes much sense. Make him the fourth outfielder if you want to prioritize Adell/Marsh. He isn’t a clubhouse cancer and can still offer at least league average play (which we may or may not get from Adell/Marsh).
