  1. So it seems that if Arte made this offer, he really was/is OK with going over the luxury tax. Which means the Angels not signing Heyward/Upton/Cespedes/Gordon really was about thinking none of them were worth the years/$$ they were seeking, and not wanting to put another expensive band-aid on the situation. I think that's ultimately the right call.
  2. I love how upset people are getting over a trader that A) hasn't happened B ) likely won't have much effect on the team if it does happen
  3. OD is going to be depressing as ****. Looking at the Cubs and their excess of young talent, their top to bottom quality lineup and then at the Angels . . Trout and . . somebody help me out here . . .
  4. Meh, not really any news here. Jerry and Mike didn't see eye to eye, yada yada.
  5. One of the great things about baseball is that teams can be, and often are, so much greater - or less - than the sum of their parts. That's what makes these projections a mostly silly exercise. As for the sum of the Angels parts, none of those projections seem that off to me. But again, wtf knows what will actually happen when real life players play real life baseball. That's why we love the game.
  6. at leas the big club doesn't have any holes on it and should be good for the next few years.
  7. I'm sure my tune will change once we start seeing actual pictures/video/reports from ST, but I don't think I've ever been this apathetic about a season starting.
  8. If once the season starts the team looks like it has a chance, and Nava/Gentry are sucking, AND Eppler/Arte still don't do anything to address the problem, then it's justifiable to be pissed. Until then I think j everyone needs to chill.
  9. welcome to Anaheim, Charlie Blackmon!
  10. Looking at the guy's numbers from last year, isn't that only slightly better than what you'd expect from a successful platoon of Gentry and Nava?
  11. I think more and more that the biggest move we make to improve the offense will be re-signing David Freese and having Escobar play 2nd. But I think it's a team that will change mid-season. I could see Santiago or Wilson being traded in July for a bat.
  12. Please - none of us have any idea how those deals went down and how much protesting Dipoto may have done. To concede that they were Arte's ideas and STILL find a way to blame Dipoto . . well, that's just some real GOP shit right there. Well done.
  13. The Simmons trade looks retarded now, not because of who/what Simmons is, but because we traded away a young SP prospect with high upside. If you're going to punt on the next couple of years, why not keep Newcomb (and Ellis for that matter) in your system and let him develop - maybe he turns into an ace. **** this shitty team.
  14. I think we end up with Gordon, which would make me happy.
  15. If they weren't in on Heyward, I don't see why they'd be in on Cespedes/Upton/Gordon. I think we'll see a trade of a SP for a lefty LF, and then the signing of a couple RPs. Offseason over.
  16. can't believe so many people have a problem with this trade. Then again, there were people who disliked the Conger trade when it happened, so I guess it makes sense.
  17. can't say I'm broken up about not trading for Neil Walker, but with so many holes on our team, it would be nice to see Eppler pull of something. The one big move we've made didn't even address an immediate problem.
  18. You forget that we changed GMs between last year's deadline and now. Likely that Dipoto was NOT planning on trading Newcomb/Ellis, but then Eppler came in and had different plans. These are the things that happen when you have internal problems and are forced to change GMs. On a side note - if it took Newcomb and Ellis to land Simmons in a trade, I highly doubt they would have netted us Cargo. Seems like Newcomb had less trade value than we all thought.
  19. Not a bad pickup for them. Some injury concerns and you always worry about that huge drop-off with pitchers from Japan. But if they're trying to become a more well-rounded team, that could give them a solid rotation and leave room for a big signing on offense.
  20. "Very good 2nd baseman for his entire career" is very debatable. Won't argue with you on the consistency. Howie is liked by fans who look at the box score and don't actually watch the games.
  21. jfc, take a day off from the self righteousness, Strad. I was being somewhat sarcastic. Obviously Howie doesn't "suck" but he drives me nuts as a player and I'm happy as hell I don't have to watch him anymore - a position I've voiced on here one or two times.
  22. The other issue to keep in mind with regard to Howie is that he sucks.
