  1. I'm trying to imagine Jose Mota trying to explain some new statistic.
  2. Nevada passed a similar law not too long ago. I have been tempted to hold my wallet up to my ear and then see the look on the cop's face as he tries to write me a ticket for talking to it. Of course, being Las Vegas, he would call for backup and eight officers would shoot me as I sat in my car on the side of the highway.
  3. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am basing my expectations for the entire season solely on the game yesterday.
  4. Who could possibly be worse? We could probably have called up any pitcher in the organization and matched what Blanton gave us last year.
  5. Was watching the Yankees-Phillies game on MLB Network this morning. Apparently the Yanks have cut ticket prices to try to get more people into the stadium. They were hawking nine-game ticket plans starting at $90.
  6. Word was that they were already starting to assemble troops before the games closed.
  7. Rotten banana. Gotta tell you, those Chinese are very creative. Mere words can't express just how offended I am.
  8. We have had some true winners. Agnew. Biden. Quayle. Cheney. Gore.
  9. I know maybe ten of the artists listed on the map.
  10. Unless I am misreading the article, the content isn't why they ordered it to be taken down. The actress in the film has made a copyright claim that has to be decided.
  11. Had some winds yesterday morning about 50-60 MPH, brief heavy rain. Supposed to rain all day today, which is unusual.
  12. Blanton in his natural environment, where he winds up no later than the second inning.
  13. That begs the question of what happens to high school players who are drafted all the time. If a high school kid declares, does he then forfeit any future chance to play NCAA baseball, even if he doesn't sign? It seems to me that there should be some sort of middle ground, in which a player can retain an agent, but as long as he doesn't take money from that agent his status is unaltered. In that case the agent knows that he will get paid if he negotiates a good enough deal. Of course, the NCAA is too busy trying to determine whether a kid took $10 in a beer league game so they can kick him out. The NCAA really does suck. They will bust a kid for this, but there is a rule on the books that says that a player can be a professional in one sport but be eligible to play NCAA sports in another.
  14. Time for a law making it illegal for flowerpots to possess chain saws.
  15. I'm trying to imagine playing home games on the shores of Lake Michigan in late winter. Can't be fun.
  16. I used to live 90 miles north of Daytona, and I went to both the Daytona 500 and what was then called the Firecracker 400 (on July 4) several times. Of course, this was long before NASCAR became more about sponsors and big money than anything else, and I could actually afford a ticket. Independent drivers ran on the circuit, which could never happen now. In 1972 I had a ticket for the 500 on the front row of the main grandstand, three seats from the start/finish line that I bought mail order without any connections. If I could even get that seat now, I shudder to think what it would cost me.
  17. Apparently not. I have heard more than one sportscaster refer to Rice's "character". Men with character don't hit women, period.
  18. I also believe that our signings of Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton have played a major part in their reluctance - not to mention the Vernon Wells debacle. I can see that Trout might not want to lock himself in to a longer-term deal, with the hope of getting an even bigger payoff later. Of course, he runs the risk of getting only a fraction of that if he develops injury problems or his skills decline.
  19. A point of correction from a native Floridian. Miami isn't part of the south, and in many respects isn't a part of Florida (although they believe that they represent the entire state - note that every pro team called "Florida" has been based in Miami). Miami is really a satellite of New York and New Jersey, those parts of it that aren't from various crapholes in the Caribbean. When I attended the University of Florida, we referred to the University of Miami as the University of New Jersey at Coral Gables, since that is where wealthy northern kids went to work on their tans for four years. I couldn't afford UM, even with the full academic scholarship that they offered - and this was 40 years ago.
  20. They must not have tested the water from St. John's, Newfoundland. Hands down the finest tap water I have ever had, and always cool to cold right out of the tap.
  21. Not sure I get the point of this. I pictured a regular taco shell with ramen in it, not a shell made of ramen.
  22. And none of this concerns me as much as the thought of Joe Blanton getting anywhere near the rotation.
