RIP Vinny. There is so much to dislike about the Dodgers, but not you. You were a legend. When I'd go to my cousins' home, and they'd always have the Dodgers game on, the only way I got through it was knowing that I would hear him calling a game. Exceotit really wasn't calling a game as much as it was just him painting a picture of what happened on the field. You could be in the other room, not seeing the game, but knowing exactly what happened by his description.

Growing up, we were so blessed with 3 of the greatest announcers in sports. Vinny towers over Hearn and Miller, which just shows how great he was. And, by all accounts, a class act, great family man, and wonderful human being. I got to meet him once, and he was just that. Listening to him was like listening to a friend.

I'm sure anyone who heard him can picture him nnow calling a game in heaven. "it's a beautiful day at the ballpark, not a cloud in the sky. Fans are streaming in, and to be honest, there isn't a bad seat in the house. I'd invite you to come down, but this is one time we can wait for you to be here.

While you're here, by sure to get a Dodger dog, brought to you by Farmer John.....

Let's look at the lineup that Tommy Lasorda brought out for us today. Boy is it a beauty! Leading off for the Dodgers, playing second base, none other than Jackie Robinson. Batting second, playing shortstop, Pee Wee Reese....

And now, it's time for Dodgers basebal!"

In the past, I've written how I believe that G-d is a baseball fan. G-d and all the players in heaven are happy to have their voice for the game.

I wish we, as Angels fans, had a run of 25+ years with Victor Rojas so that we could truly have an Angels voice that could have given us a fraction of the connection that helLA had with Vinny.

    RIP.

He was not only a great storyteller, he was the master of choosing the right story to tell that ties into the game happening before you, and then pacing that story as the game moves along in perfect tandem.
A natural genius.  The best ever.

As both a Dodger and Angels fan growing up in Southern California during the 80's, the summers belonged to Vin Scully announcing baseball. There was nobody better to listen to. Its sad that we as baseballs will never have any great people calling baseball games. Also mentioned earlier, we were spoiled to also have Chick Hearn and Bob Miller to announce games. If you want to expand, it was also awesome to have Madden announcing NFL games and Keith Jackson announcing Rose Bowl.

Man, Vin Scully was without a doubt my favorite announcer of all time.
I would hear him on the radio when my parents drove me around and we listened to the Dodger games (before I became an Angel fan). My Dad used to always say "He talks too much" but I always thought if there was one guy I wanted to listen to talk too much about baseball, it was Vin. Such an absolute delight to listen to him on the radio. Always had stories that made me crack up, was so good at illustrating what he saw on the field. Such an amazing personality that will never be matched. Very sad to hear this news.
RIP Good Sir, you are already missed.

Funny enough, yesterday I was trying to dial in my new tv (such a pain in the ass). While checking everything the Gibson home run clip video was the first one I saw so I hit it to test everything (sound, picture etc)
And then I sat and watched this like 5 minute video on it. And as huge as that home run was, Scukly really stood out to me as I watched it. And I thought to myself how perfect the narrative was just before the pitch.
"2 out, bottom of the 9th, 5-4 A's. Not a bad opening act..."

I bet his last words were "Dodgers."
I hope that some the games he called get put in rotation regularly for the generation that didn't get to hear him call a game. Dude was by himself and put all 2 man teams to shame.

    Great story about Gary Mccord!

Gary McCord reveals he gambled with Phil Mickelson from the CBS tower during play
Gary McCord revealed details of how he would gamble with Phil on the results of Phil's play via elaborate signals with Mickelson's caddie.
Golf By Jay Rigdon on 05/16/2022
Gary McCord spent decades as one of the top golf analysts at CBS.
Long a colorful character, from being barred from Augusta National to a solid cameo role in Tin Cup, CBS parted ways with McCord a few years ago. Never one to apply much filter to himself, McCord spoke to Alan Shipnuck for Shipnuck’s forthcoming unauthorized Mickelson biography Phil, out this week.
The book release would have originally coincided with Mickelson’s defense of his 2021 PGA Championship win. Instead, thanks to a series of revelations about Phil’s involvement with a rival Saudi-backed league, the most damaging of which came from Shipnuck himself, Mickelson chose not to play at Southern Hills, where his absence might end up being one of the bigger storylines of the week.
In an excerpt released this weekend (quoted here from the London Times) focused on Mickelson’s gambling habits (and losses), McCord revealed one of the most absurd (and yet, considering the people involved, very believable) anecdotes yet: that he used to gamble with Phil on shot outcomes while working in the CBS tower.
The section in question, via an excerpt at the Times:
“When I was in the TV tower,” says former CBS announcer Gary McCord, “every time Phil got to my hole, Bones [his caddie] would look up at me and I would flash the odds. If Phil had a 15-footer, I’d flash three fingers, which meant the odds were 3-1. If he was 60 feet, I’d give him 2-1 on a two-putt. Bones would go down and whisper in his ear and Phil would look up at me and shake his head, yes or no.
“I can’t tell you how many wadded-up twenties I threw out of the tower, until the Tour found out about it and I got word through CBS I was no longer allowed to gamble with Phil while up in the tower.”
On the list of wild Phil Mickelson stories, this is probably one of the tamer ones. But there’s also something to be said for the fact that Mickelson was literally gambling on himself during live play, with an on-air broadcaster. And doing so routinely enough that they had an entire shorthand signaling system.
Anyway, there are likely even more wild anecdotes in Shipnuck’s book, which is garnering plenty of early praise for being detailed but even-handed.

Hey Phil, you are a really shitty gambler.
As a gambler myself, of course I don’t have the cabbage Phil does, but these losses were incurred in a 4 year stretch, according to the book.  That is awful.
He should hit @Lou, @Tankor I up for advice.  We could get him squared away.

SoCalSportsFan reacted to Angelsjunky in 24-13: Best record through 37 games since 2004
X games over .500 has always been used to refer to how many "extra" wins a team has over a .500 record. So just as 24-13 is 11 games over .500 (11-11), 92-70 is 22 games over .500 (70-70).
Note also that 24-13 is a lot better than 55-44. The former is a .649 winning percentage, the latter .568. The Angels are currently on pace for a 105-57 record, while 55-44 is a pace for 90-72.
Now I don't think they'll win 105 games, but if they play at just an 86-win pace for the rest of the year (.528 W%), they'll reach 90 wins - that is quite reachable, and maybe more.

11 games over .500 over the course of the season puts them at 92 wins. If the winnings keeps going, this could be a 100 win team.

You may be surprised to learn that Ryan never claimed a Cy Young Award. The closest Ryan got was 1973, the year he went 21-16 with a 2.87 ERA and 383 strikeouts -- a single-season record in the modern era. In a close race, Ryan came in second behind Jim Palmer (22-9, 2.40 ERA, 158 K's), whose Orioles went 97-65 while Ryan's Angels went 79-83. Ryan finished his career with 5,714 strikeouts, which ranks first all time.

Been a fan since mid 70's, and yes there does seem to be something about this current team!
Went to both 1982 home games against the Brewers.
Saw a 9/2022 game against the A's while both teams were hot.
Was working part time for the company that provides security for Anaheim Stadium.
Ended up working all the Twins and Yankees games. One of the Yankees games I was working behind the Autry's suite, and saw Mrs. Autry a few times during that day.
Only was able work Game 1 of the World Series, but also was to be in charge of about 15 "yellow coats" and we were up in View from the end of the stadium in.

The Angels are now 7-2-1 in series this season, but the sweep would be very very nice.
Next 12 are against the A's & the Rangers. Need to beat the crap out of them while they're down.
2022 needs to be a season of payback to the rest of the AL West.
