Though I do not agree that he's the greatest Angel (I go with Ryan), I do give you thumbs up for including Ralston in your mention of All time greats.   But Split, I'm guessing you're someone who is 30 or younger.   You don't mention Ryan or Fregosi, or even Grich, Downing, or Baylor.   There were others who were good.   Tanana also gets little credit for being a decent pitcher as an Angel.   He was pretty young when they let him go.  26 or 27 maybe.

They are a team with historically lots of unfulfilled potential, save for one magical season.

Players to me who define the team: Nolan Ryan, Brian Downing, Bobby Grich, Dick Schofield, Mike Witt, Mark Langston, Tim Salmon, Darin Erstad, Chili Davis, Vladimir Guerrero, and Jered Weaver to name a few. More recent players would include Trumbo, Bourjos, and Trout.
 
Angels baseball is putting the work in. It's "salt-of-the-Earth", down and dirty playstyle. It's an enjoyable grind of hustle, grit, and diving for every ball. It's trying to play baseball the right way, every day. It's the arrival of Summer. It's keeping your eye on the ball. It's going for broke and taking the extra base. It's turning the routine double play. It's making the play at the plate. It's the crack of the bat as the ball hits off the barrel. It's a beautiful curve ball. It's watching yet another no-hitter by Nolan Ryan. It's a grand slam from Dicky Schofield. It's a perfect game from Mike Witt. It's a late inning rally capped by a Guerrero single that sucks the air out of the Fenway fans. It's a World Series Ring we weren't sure we'd ever get. It's watching a young man who loves to play baseball turning into possibly one of the greatest players in the history of the game.
 
Angels baseball is family. You love them to death and live or die with every second of the game.

I'm an Angels fan because your character is best defined when you're cheering through adversity.  I was ecstatic -- then rather uncomfortable -- when the Angels won the World Series.  The prospect of winning another championship by turns thrills and terrifies me.  (I'll be uncomfortable again if the Angels are world champions.)  I define the Angels as a team that's fun to cheer for, through good times and bad... and for whom bad times seem to come easier than good times.  I couldn't live with myself if I was a fan of a team that always wins... that just seems too easy.  I'm happy and comfortable rooting for a team for whom winning is an aspiration; one that is within grasp, and one that will be sweeter to savor when it finally comes to pass.

I'll enter and not really give a crap and still finish middle of pack.

And that was just last year.

Loveable losers

Actually Soto, Splint is in his 50's. My guess is he prefers Salmon to those guys because he started with the Angels and was here his entire career. I also know that Nolan is his all time favorite player.

If not for weed being on the violations list, the Angels should explore trade options with the Rockies. After all, even the AAA team plays in Colorado...

The use of WAR for Hall of Fame purposes is moronic in the first place. Trout's accumulated 20 WAR so far. At this pace, he could play 6 seasons, accumulate 60 WAR, call it quits and be a HOF candidate, all at age 26. By that measure, he could be in the HOF at age 31.

It saddens me that Mike Trout has made some fans so jaded that a 40 WAR career becomes "mediocre." OK, it doesn't really sadden me, come on, dude.
 
By the way, according to Fangraphs Salmon had 35.1 career WAR, so he's even worse than you thought.
 
Anyhow, understand that Fangraphs follows these general guidelines:
0-1 Scrub
1-2 Role Player
2-3 Solid Starter
3-4 Good Player
4-5 All-Star
5-6 Superstar
6+ MVP
 
Now look at the same chart with number of years Salmon's accomplished the feat:
0-1 Scrub (3)
1-2 Role Player (2)
2-3 Solid Starter (3)
3-4 Good Player (2)
4-5 All-Star (3)
5-6 Superstar (1)
6+ MVP (0)
 
That's 14 seasons, but in three of them he played 76 or fewer games, and five 100 or fewer - so he really only has 9 full seasons and 5 partial seasons. But Salmon has had 4 All-Star or higher caliber seasons, and 6 Good or better, 9 in which he was solid (average) or better. In 1672 games he had 35.1 WAR, which is an average of 3.4 per 162 games.
 
He's nowhere close to being a Hall of Famer, and I wouldn't say he had a great career in the larger scheme of things - but he had a very good one.
