Game 6 reacted to fan_since79 in Baseball Photo Trivia
Ty's father was killed by two shotgun blasts at close range. His mother was later tried for manslaughter and found innocent. She insisted that she simply thought it was a burglar and nothing more. The young Cobb remained distant from his mother after that and refused to attend her funeral in 1936. Psychologists can wonder if this tragedy contributed to his manic intensity on the field. He had worshipped his father and considered him the greatest man alive.

Why would we put asterisks next to his name? Ted Williams has no asterisks.

Game 6 reacted to Duren, Duren in League & Union Reportedly "Closing In" On Deal For 2020 Season
McGriff had over a decade to hit those few more home runs.
Ted Williams missed approximately 5 prime seasons because of military service. He finished with 521 homers, averaging 37 per season. Realistically he could have approached 700 plus. Possibly even gotten near or past Ruth.
The WW2 seasons were watered down with mostly replacement type players. If Williams had played against them he likely would have hit .400 multiple times. He had just hit .406 the previous season. Probably also 50 plus homers per season.
He was older during the Korean war, but still one if the best hitters in the game.
The closest I can think of as a comparison would be Pujols missing five seasons in his prime with the Cardinals.
Makes one appreciate what Williams actually did career wise. Don't cry over McGriff. Losing the World Series was far more devastating for baseball.

If you figure each ball club has about 270 players in their minor leagues, with 30 teams, that million dollars comes to about $123 per player.

Game 6 reacted to HaloSpurs in The Athletic ranks the Angels broadcast team 11th
It's the twitter account I run - instagram/podcast too - but it's part of our efforts to grow the game over in the UK - and for me obviously it's a focus on the Angels. Every MLB team is represented by one of these fan accounts, I'm also part of MLBUKCommunity where we organise meet ups across the UK to get people together to watch baseball. Some clubs have been a lot more supportive of us than others. Phillies, Mets etc have really embraced it and have been really helpful to let those accounts grow as they see the marketing opportunities where we are basically helping them to crack the UK market for free. Others have been very unresponsive and have ignored efforts so far. The Angels for ages were one of those, although Gubi/Victor were very supportive, but now things have changed a bit with new social media admin, Joe Maddon is also very keen to help, sent me a video in spring training, as did Upton and Simmons. Unfortunately, whilst minor, it's been a real kick in the teeth having this season curtailed, because the momentum we had growing has been stopped. No London series this year and likely to go elsewhere in Europe next year - and the efforts we've made to get people engaged will be weakened. I keep a database of Angels fans in the UK that I find, or people I am able to convert - and whilst small still it is growing.

Victor is fantastic, one of the best in the game. I wish he had a different partner, and I especially wish it were someone not associated with the Royals. It's distracting to hear them reminisce or inside-joke about people they knew in Kansas City 30 years ago. Nothing personal, Gubi seems like a good guy, I just think the two of them together are less than the sum of the parts.

To be fair, Jered Weaver is an uber dick.
But he was our dick.
We need more dicks on the mound with attitude.

This is probably out there for a comp.
A lefty version of Blyleven?
Or another comp, Hamels?

Game 6 reacted to Stradling in Angels select Louisville LHP Reid Detmers 10th overall
Are we really worried about his ability to strike out batters? He struck out 48 in 22 innings this year. He struck out 167 in 113 innings last year and two years ago he struck out 69 in 55 innings. He will strike out enough at the big league level to keep hitters honest.

His pitch repertoire reminds me of Cole Hamels. Hamels wasn't the hardest thrower but had plus command and 3 plus pitches.

No. 8 on the list is pretty impressive.

In the video that @CanadianHalo posted there is a pitch they called 95 mph. That is good enough for a left handed starter. And when you throw a change and that curve ball, 95 is plenty.

I've said this before but from my interactions with people who were a part of the organization in those days everyone including his critics loved the guy.
Great story BTW... Lasorda is a clown.

Game 6 reacted to Vladdy Issues in The Official 2020 MLB Amateur Draft Thread (June 10th & 11th)
Funny story... Tommy Lasorda yelled at me once because of this. It was early 2003, I was working at Buca Di Beppo in Universal City Walk as a food server and a party of 15 dodger executive came in and management trolled me (as a young man I was a passionate dodger hater) by giving the big party to me.
Being a professional and HAVING NO CHOICE I took the table in the Pope Room and greeted everyone as they walked in, showing no emotions and just going through motions... and then I see Bill Bavasi (who was working for the dogs at that time) walking up and my enthusiasm went to another level.
NO JOKE my exact quote "Dude Bill Bavasi!!" as I walked up to him and shook his hand and pull him in for a bro hug. Poor guy thought the other people in the party put me up to this (he actually asked them) and then I started talking about how my enthusiasm and appreciation was real for all that he's done for the Angels.
I went on a rant TO THE WHOLE ROOM about how most of the players on our World Series winning team were picked by him and how he deserves a lot of the credit for everything. It was a real awesome moment for me. So get everything set up during the meal, go extra all out for Bill Bavasi and then get the wrath of Tommy Lasorda at the end.
Tommy basically said something along the lines of a what makes a great comedian a great comedian is knowing the crowd they're dealing with and that I should've known better being in Los Angeles and not showing the dodgers respect and something about me not being raised right.
The whole time I'm smiling and laughing cause it was funny the reaction I was getting and Tommy walks out of the Pope Room to our manager standing outside telling the manager to find a better server with better taste in baseball.
Bill Bavasi and few other guys who walked out last went up to the manager and told him that Tommy was joking and that I was a good server... Bill Bavasi hung out for a few minutes more afterwards and gave me an extra $20 for the service and thanked me for my appreciation. Bill Bavasi is a cool dude.

I don't know how many of you have been to Cooperstown. It really can make a lifelong impression. When you walk past all the busts, lined up next to each other you can't help but see a common connection that transcends the different eras. You assume it is a collection of equals, all time greats. Of course, each person elected worked within the confines of their era, but these were the ones who were most memorable over the long haul.
Even when stats open up legitimate questions about who is in or should be, you realize that those selected were judged by the most respected baseball men of each era. Their judgments were based on in person observations factoring in subtle things not represented in stats.
Of course the selection process has inbuilt flaws, but that is a complex topic by itself.
I think the process just has to be refined and clarified some more. Intangibles are hard to quantify, but they do deserve serious consideration in addition to stats. That seems to be one of the points of contention.
I visited Cooperstown twice a few decades ago. The entire environment was like a trip back in time, and really created a mood transcending any specific era. Memory is a bit vague, but they had some nice card sets (TCMA) and other items for sale that fit the mood of the place.

Game 6 reacted to gotbeer in Is Sosh a HOF manager?
Those in the hall and records.
Eliminate some non comparables. First Connie Mack, only manager in the hall with a losing record.
Connie Mack 53 7,755 3,731 3,948 .486 Over 25 years managing
Sparky Anderson (bio) 26 4,030 2,194 1,834 .545 Bobby Cox 29 4,508 2,504 2,001 .556
Bucky Harris 29 4,408 2,157 2,218 .493 Tony La Russa 33 5,097 2,728 2,365 .536
John McGraw 33 4,769 2,763 1,948 .586 Bill McKechnie 25 3,647 1,896 1,723 .524 Casey Stengel 25 3,766 1,905 1,842 .508 Joe Torre 29 4,329 2,326 1,997 .538
Over a .550 win percentage.
Walter Alston (bio) 23 3,658 2,040 1,613 .558 Miller Huggins 17 2,570 1,413 1,134 .555 Al Lopez 17 2,425 1,410 1,004 .584 Joe McCarthy 24 3,487 2,125 1,333 .615 Frank Selee 16 2,180 1,284 862 .598 Billy Southworth 13 981 620 346 .642 Earl Weaver 17 2,541 1,480 1,060 .583
That leaves:
Leo Durocher 24 3,739 2,008 1,709 .540 Ned Hanlon 19 2,530 1,313 1,164 .530 Whitey Herzog 19 2,409 1,281 1,125 .532 Tommy Lasorda 21 3,050 1,599 1,439 .526 Wilbert Robinson 19 2,819 1,399 1,398 .500 Dick Williams 22 3,023 1,571 1,451 .520 Mike Scioscia 19 3078 1650 1428 .536
Pretty much better win percentage than the other 3 19 season managers. And better than 2 of the 3 over 19 season managers.
So yeah, he should be in.

This is kind of my take.
I dont really have a problem with including more guys... but, it changes the standard. Thats the problem.
If they kept it super exclusive, there would be no arguments. Once "really good, not legend" guys started getting in, it brought on the "why not this guy then?" arguments.

Game 6 reacted to Lou in Stripling: I had no chance to make Dodgers' rotation, Angels trade was win-win
He wasn't a throw in as far as the dodgers are concerned. The deal would never have been just Stripling for Rengifo. Us taking on Pederson's salary was necessary.
