Agreed. Kole Calhoun comes to mind. The guy is/was just flat out, a ball player. And what was perceived as short and squat quickly revealed itself as short and incredibly strong.
Of course, you can't have a superstar without that innate superstar potential that guys like Trout possess. But I've yet to see a single superstar that didn't have either an unrivaled, even abrasive competitive streak in them, or a borderline institutionally mental work ethic.
The closest in my mind might've been Hanley Ramirez. But even with Hanley, while his work ethic lacked, he was uncommonly competitive, and still, his reign as an elite player ended around his 30th birthday. Not a ton of longevity there.
I do believe Adell has the natural giftedness and work ethic. But it's the innate he's missing.

The 2020 season with no minor leagues really messed up Adell’s development.

Can't speak for others, but I never said he doesn't work hard. I said he seems to think he's a lot better than he is.

I think AJ said it best. FFS Taylor. FFS.
Maybe we can blame Adell's struggles in climate change.

I think Moniak drew quite a bit of wrath from Phillies fans who had high expectations of him as the #1 draft pick.  We acquired him already knowing that he was basically a failed prospect who still had some potential but not a ton.  I think if another team acquired Adell, they'd likely have the same low expectations that we do of Moniak and probably not care too much if it doesn't pan out.
The key thing is that a lot of fans thought Adell would be a cornerstone of this franchise for years to come, so to see him struggle mightily and fall short, I think that has led to him being more of a target than other prospects.

It runs consistent with off the field stuff that has been kept silent regarding Adell. Without getting into too much detail, he wants to be so much more than a professional athlete. The hope was that he would age out of it, but it appears to be solidly part of who he is, and people that share this trait, tend to be professional victims beyond all else.

This is one of those terrifying signings only because I can see our org talking themselves in to letting this guy start games consistently if we get bitten by the injury bug. This signing is fine if he's a late inning defensive replacement, or starts every week or two. Anything more than that and this dude is a burden.

Spirit_of_02 reacted to Dtwncbad in OC Register: Warriors owner Joe Lacob confirms he’s considering bid for Angels
I am not trying to stir anything up here but the reality is we as Angel fans have enjoyed a reliable separation of sports and politics under Moreno.
Yes we know he is conservative, but he doesn’t foster a culture where that political stance is omnipresent and openly displayed.
Joe Lacob either endorses or at a minimum has no issue with Steve Kerr being very openly political, arguably at an obnoxious level.
My contained point is if we all like to keep politics on the side as much  as possible, are we excited about a prospective owner that evidently doesn’t have that boundary for key organizational people who are the microphone every day?
None of this post should be construed as initiating a political conversation that belongs elsewhere.
I’m just saying if we like our baseball kept separate from politics, should we at least consider taking a hard look at if we would like or dislike a somewhat openly political culture similar to the team already owned by Lacob?
I think it’s a fair question.  And I would expect people to be able to comment on this without it turning into a discussion about actual political topics.

Again: really wish they'd just hire one guy and stick to it.  I see zero reason to include O'Neal in the mix here at all.  And I'm still just completely over the obsession with Vasgersian at this point.  Move on from him.

I've been very critical of him and my perception of how this franchise has been run for the last couple decades.   And maybe it's too little, too late, but payroll is up to 206m when he could have just stayed around the usual amount and walked with his 3bil.  Instead, he not only moved the top line up but he didn't do it on a big splash.  It seems he actually gave his gm control of the team.  They've added about 50m since they agreed with Ohtani and that could have gone to someone like Verlander instead of a bunch of very solid pieces to a lineup that certainly needed it.  So cheers.

And this is a far far cry from the same 'same old off season'.  Payroll is up and being spend on useful players.  Not some splashy move.
Also, if it does turn out that the projection are a bit high because these guys got less playing time then it's most likely that other guys in front of them are staying healthy and performing well.  I'm fine with wasting a few mil because we don't need the back up as much as we thought.
But now that they have it, they're gonna use it.  They're gonna keep guys fresh by giving them days off.  No more putting a guy in a lineup when all he can do is bunt.

You don't like Ward. We get it. But next season when he hits .297 / .377 / .525 with 35 HR you can't say you like him.
Plus, we have no OF to take his spot, and don't say Rengifo.
He is still under club control, arbitration first year.
    We don't need a SP.

Well if you’re going to trade Ohtani at the deadline regardless of the team’s record at that point, then you should just trade him now.

I think the decision at the deadline will be entirely based on their playoff chances at that point.

DO NOT TRADE Rengifo!!!! Come on people - just because you can, doesn’t mean you should…..!!!!

Rengifo carried this lineup far more than Ward did last season (and I’m not hating on Ward)… I think Rengifo is proving to be special…. Not spectacular, but an exceptional “glue guy”…!

I love how Minasian is tightening the screws on Rendon!!!  Prove to the club we can count on you, or we’ll move on….

We get it… you’re too blessed to be stressed… and you and the Vernon Wells of the world can enjoy your umbrella drinks on some island while clowning about how your mediocrity got over on some MLB club… or you can demonstrate some personal pride and teach your kids what it means to earn a paycheck….

People always talk about what happened in Atlanta and Toronto and what Perry saw those GMs do while working there.  I've long believed that Alex Tamin is a bigger power broker than people realize.  Since Maddon's ouster we have heard how his insertion into the clubhouse was a cause of friction for Maddon, that his BP algorithms and the use or non use was a factor in the Maddon ouster.  Tamin was part of the Dodger's brain trust that created a ton of redundancy and positional/platoon options.  This season minus Maddon seems very much in line with what I'd have bet on an Alex Tamin driven front office doing player wise.

It isnt about brand names, its about impact.
I would be just as happy to swing a trade for a SS, but the reality is that we dont have the farm to trade for an impact SS, unless we take on a bad contract or give up guys we shouldnt be giving up in controllable young starters we actually also need.  Weakening one area to buff another is generally a zero sum equation.
But the simple fact is that SS is the one place that we most needed to upgrade.
If Perry can somehow swing a deal hat doesnt cost us Suarez or Sandoval to get the SS we need, no one will be happier than I, but he has zero leverage right now and every team he calls knows it.
Thats what position he never should have let himself get put in.
